🌙 Chapter 50: The Space Between Us

Jay's POV

The next morning felt… heavier.

Not in a dramatic way.

Not like something bad was about to happen.

Just—

like something unfinished was waiting for me.

I stepped out of the car and walked through the school gates, the familiar sound of students filling the air around me. Laughter, gossip, footsteps echoing against the marble floors.

Normal.

Everything looked normal.

But I knew better.

Nothing about this was normal anymore.

As I walked through the corridor, I could already feel the whispers starting again.

"They got paired."

"Jay and Keifer…"

"This is going to be chaos."

"Did you see them yesterday?"

I didn't react.

Didn't slow down.

Didn't even acknowledge it.

At this point, their voices had become background noise—like static you learn to ignore.

But somehow…

today it felt louder.

Or maybe—

my mind was just quieter.

I reached the door of Section E.

For a second, my hand paused on the handle.

Not because I was scared.

Just…

because I knew something inside that room had changed.

And I didn't know if I was ready to face it.

Still—

I pushed the door open.

The usual chaos greeted me.

Blaster was mid-argument, his voice loud and dramatic.

"I'm telling you, that beat was off—completely off!"

Rory rolled his eyes. "Your ears are the problem, not the beat."

Drew was laughing like he had just heard the funniest joke in existence.

David was asleep. Of course.

Edrix was focused on his laptop.

Eman stood near the back, talking to someone quietly.

And then—

Ci-N.

He wasn't talking.

Wasn't laughing.

Wasn't even looking at anyone.

He was just standing near his desk.

Holding something.

A box.

For a moment, I didn't think much of it.

I walked inside like always, calm, controlled, distant.

I placed my bag on the desk and sat down.

Same seat.

Same place.

Beside Keifer.

I didn't look at him.

Didn't need to.

His presence was already there.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

I opened my book.

Focused on the pages.

Words blurred together, but I didn't care.

As long as I looked occupied, no one would try to talk to me.

At least—

that's what I thought.

"JJ."

His voice was softer than usual.

Careful.

I looked up.

Ci-N was standing in front of me.

Closer now.

The box still in his hands.

He opened it slowly.

And instantly—

the smell hit me.

Warm.

Sweet.

Familiar.

Pancakes.

My fingers tightened slightly on the edge of the book.

Memories don't ask for permission.

They just—

come back.

Flour on the floor.

Laughter echoing in the kitchen.

Blaster making a mess.

Drew stealing food.

Eman yelling.

Ci-N smiling like everything in the world was simple.

And me—

laughing without thinking.

For a second—

just a second—

I wasn't in the classroom anymore.

I was back there.

Back when things felt real.

Back when nothing was broken.

"They're fresh," Ci-N said, pulling me back.

"I made them."

I blinked.

Looked at the box again.

Then at him.

He was trying to act normal.

Trying to act like this wasn't a big deal.

But I could see it.

In the way his fingers tightened slightly around the box.

In the way his eyes kept searching my face.

"You used to like them," he added.

Used to.

That word again.

I looked away.

"I'm not hungry."

Flat.

Simple.

Safe.

If I kept things simple, nothing would get complicated.

Ci-N didn't move.

"Just try one."

"No."

A pause.

The classroom had started to quiet down.

Blaster wasn't talking anymore.

Rory had stopped typing.

Even Drew was watching now.

Ci-N took a small step closer.

"JJ… come on."

"Ci-N."

My voice dropped slightly.

A warning.

He should've stopped.

He usually does.

But today—

he didn't.

"Just one bite," he said softly.

"That's it. Then I'll stop."

Something inside me tightened.

Because it wasn't about pancakes anymore.

It wasn't about food.

It was about everything behind it.

Everything I wasn't ready to deal with.

Everything I was still trying to ignore.

"I said no."

My voice was colder now.

Sharper.

But he still didn't move.

Still stood there.

Still trying.

Still hoping.

And that—

that's what broke it.

Not him.

Not the situation.

Me.

I closed my book slowly.

The sound echoed louder than it should have.

Then I looked at him.

Really looked at him.

And for a moment—

I saw it.

Not just hope.

Not just guilt.

Something deeper.

Something that made this harder than it needed to be.

"I don't want it."

And before I could think—

before I could stop myself—

I pushed the plate.

Hard.

It slipped.

Hit the edge of the desk.

And fell.

The sound—

sharp.

Final.

Pancakes scattered across the floor.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

I looked down at the mess.

Then slowly—

at Ci-N.

He wasn't angry.

Wasn't shocked.

He just stood there.

Still.

Like something inside him had quietly cracked.

His eyes glistened slightly.

And then—

a tear slipped.

Just one.

He wiped it quickly.

Like it didn't matter.

Like no one saw it.

But I did.

I saw everything.

He let out a small laugh.

Soft.

Broken.

"Okay," he said.

"It's fine."

Fine.

Like I didn't just throw away something he made.

Like I didn't just push him away again.

He bent down, picked up the empty plate carefully, and stood up.

Then he looked at me again.

Still trying to smile.

"Wait here."

My chest tightened.

"I'll bring another one."

Another one.

After everything.

After that.

He still said that.

He turned and walked out.

Fast.

Too fast.

The moment the door closed—

the room exhaled.

Blaster ran a hand through his hair.

"JJ… that was—"

He didn't finish.

Drew shifted awkwardly.

"Yeah… that was kinda harsh."

David finally sat up.

He didn't look angry.

Just…

tired.

"You don't have to forgive us," he said quietly.

"But you didn't have to do that."

That hit.

More than it should have.

I didn't respond.

Couldn't.

Because for the first time—

I wasn't sure I was right.

A minute passed.

Then the door opened again.

Ci-N walked back in.

Another plate in his hands.

Perfect.

Clean.

Like nothing had happened.

Eman followed behind him.

Arms crossed.

Watching everything.

Ci-N walked straight to me.

Placed the plate down gently.

Carefully.

Like it mattered.

Like I mattered.

"Try again," he said.

Soft.

No anger.

No blame.

Just…

hope.

Blaster stepped behind him and patted his back.

Drew did the same.

Rory nodded slightly.

Even Edrix looked up from his laptop.

Eman spoke from the back.

"Eat it."

Simple.

Direct.

I stared at the plate.

Then at Ci-N.

Then at everyone else.

And something inside me—

shifted.

Not completely.

Not all at once.

But enough.

Because they weren't forcing me.

They weren't defending themselves.

They weren't arguing.

They were just—

there.

Still trying.

Even after everything.

My fingers moved slowly.

I picked up the fork.

Ci-N froze.

The entire room did.

I cut a small piece.

Brought it to my mouth.

And took a bite.

Silence.

Then—

"It's good."

My voice was quieter now.

Softer.

Real.

Ci-N's expression broke.

Relief.

Pure.

Unfiltered.

"Of course it is," he said quickly.

"I made it."

Blaster grinned.

"Finally."

Drew laughed.

"Character development unlocked."

I shook my head slightly.

Then I looked at Ci-N.

Really looked at him.

"You're forgiven."

The words were simple.

But they meant everything.

He blinked.

"Wait… seriously?"

"Yes."

A small pause.

Then—

"What about the others?"

The room went still again.

I looked around.

At all of them.

At the people who once felt like home.

Then I looked back at my plate.

"I didn't say that."

Calm.

Honest.

Final.

And they understood.

This wasn't the end.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it wasn't distance anymore either.

And for the first time since everything broke—

something small…

started to come back.
