The greatest school of magic in the world was founded by four extraordinary witches and wizards.
History remembers them as Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.
Four friends.
Four pioneers.
Four visionaries.
Together they journeyed across Britain during one of the darkest periods in magical history, witnessing firsthand the persecution of magical folk. Wizarding children lived in fear, many forced to conceal their gifts, while others met far grimmer fates at the hands of frightened or ignorant Muggles.
Determined to build a better future, the four friends searched for a sanctuary beyond the reach of ordinary men.
Deep within the Scottish Highlands, protected by powerful enchantments and surrounded by mountains and lochs, they built a castle unlike any the magical world had ever seen.
It was a refuge.
A place where magical children could learn without fear, where knowledge would be preserved, and where future generations could surpass their teachers.
They named it Hogwarts.
So begins every account of the Founders.
The story then continues in much the same way.
Conflict arose between the four, driven by Salazar Slytherin's prejudice against Muggle-born witches and wizards. His views became increasingly extreme until his friendship with the other Founders could no longer be maintained. Eventually, he challenged—or, according to some accounts, was challenged by—Godric Gryffindor. Slytherin was defeated in their legendary duel and departed Hogwarts forever, never to return.
This is the history taught to every Hogwarts student.
It is the history repeated by scholars who seldom questioned the records they inherited.
But history is rarely so simple.
Over centuries, facts become stories.
Stories become legends.
Legends become unquestioned truths.
The purpose of this work is not to convince you that every accepted account is false, nor to claim that Salazar Slytherin was a blameless man unjustly condemned by history.
Rather...
It is to present the evidence that has been neglected, ignored, or deliberately forgotten.
For those content with the official account, this book offers little of value.
But for those willing to question long-held beliefs...
For those who believe history deserves to be examined rather than merely repeated...
Turn the page.
Let the Founders speak once more.
Part One: The Founders
Every witch and wizard knows the names of the Four Founders.
Godric Gryffindor.
Helga Hufflepuff.
Rowena Ravenclaw.
Salazar Slytherin.
Their names have echoed through the centuries, becoming legends so great that many have forgotten they were once simply people.
People who laughed.
People who failed.
People who dreamed.
Before speaking of Hogwarts, one must first understand the individuals who built it.
For a castle is only a reflection of its builders.
The Founders did not grow up together, nor were they childhood companions brought together by fate.
Each came from a different corner of Britain.
Each walked a different path.
Each carried different ideals.
Only later did those paths converge.
Helga Hufflepuff
Helga hailed from the broad, rolling valleys of Wales.
Her family was neither wealthy nor politically influential. They earned their living through farming, brewing, and trading food throughout nearby magical settlements.
From an early age, Helga displayed an unusual fascination with both cooking and herbology. She believed that a shared meal could bridge differences that arguments never could.
Those who knew her described her as endlessly cheerful, endlessly patient, and endlessly curious.
Upon reaching adulthood, she left home with little more than a travelling pack, determined to explore Britain, discover new magical plants, recipes, and cultures, and understand the countless ways people lived.
Her greatest strength was never her magic.
It was her ability to make strangers feel like family.
Rowena Ravenclaw
Far to the north, among the glens of Scotland, Rowena Ravenclaw was born into a family devoted to magical scholarship.
While other children played, Rowena filled parchment after parchment with theories regarding spellcraft, runes, and magical principles.
By the time she reached her teenage years, she had already mastered nearly everything her family could teach her.
Worse still for her elders...
She had begun solving problems they themselves had debated for decades.
Realizing that remaining at home would only limit her growth, Rowena departed in search of knowledge beyond the walls of her family's library.
To her, ignorance was the world's greatest enemy.
Godric Gryffindor
Godric was born into a family of warrior-wizards.
For generations, his ancestors had served Muggle kings and nobles as swordsmen and protectors.
To the outside world, they appeared to be exceptionally talented warriors.
Their magic remained carefully concealed.
Such families would later become the inspiration behind many of the knightly orders remembered in Muggle history.
From childhood, Godric trained in both swordsmanship and magic.
By the age of sixteen, few adults could match his skill with a blade.
Yet strength alone never satisfied him.
He wished to challenge himself, explore distant lands, and test his abilities against the greatest warriors and magical creatures Britain had to offer.
Adventure called to him.
And he answered.
Salazar Slytherin
To the east lay the great marshes of East Anglia.
Treacherous wetlands filled with poisonous plants, venomous creatures, and dense mists.
Muggles avoided them whenever possible, believing the marshes cursed.
For magical folk, however...
They were a sanctuary.
Hidden within those wetlands existed one of Britain's largest magical communities.
Many of its families specialized in potions, for countless rare ingredients could only be found among the marshes.
It was there that Salazar Slytherin was born.
Unlike the image painted by later generations, the young Salazar was not consumed by hatred.
He was simply another gifted wizard, fascinated by potions, magical creatures, and the serpents that inhabited the marshes.
That changed during his seventeenth year.
One of Salazar's closest friends fell in love with a young woman from a nearby Muggle village.
Against every warning, he revealed the existence of magic to her.
The secret did not remain between them.
Within days, the village learned the truth.
A frightened mob hunted him down.
His body was later found hanging from an old oak at the edge of the marsh, left there as a warning to any others who might venture beyond its borders.
Grief soon gave way to fury.
Salazar sought vengeance.
What happened over the following days has been omitted from history, yet multiple contemporary accounts agree on the outcome.
Salazar entered the village.
By the time he left...
It no longer existed.
The flames burned for three days.
Not a single soul remained alive.
Whether every victim had participated in his friend's murder is unknown.
Whether innocents perished alongside the guilty is almost certain.
It was not justice.
It was a massacre.
Unable to bear either the memories of his friend or the blood upon his own hands, Salazar abandoned the marshes.
He did not return home.
Nor did he know where his road would lead.
He simply walked.
