Chapter 18 - Chapter 19: Ambition

The council hall was brightly lit by candles,

yet the light could not dispel the chill spreading through the chamber.

Ministers sat on both sides.

Some still wore their armor,

some had robes in disarray.

On every face was the same expression of unease.

What should they do now?

The throne stood empty.

Kai had not come.

He was not ill, nor had he left the palace.

He had simply locked himself inside his chambers—

like an empty fortress that refused all visitors.

There had been no response at all.

At last, an old minister could no longer hold back.

"Your Majesty… should give us some kind of stance."

No one answered.

Farr stood in the center of the hall, his brows tightly furrowed.

"What is strange… is that these past few days,

His Majesty's chambers have been unusually quiet."

Hong Lei gave a cold laugh.

"Quiet? He's simply drunk enough that he doesn't even have the strength to curse people anymore. Of course it's quiet!"

Farr did not reply.

He knew Hong Lei was avoiding the matter.

And he himself had no better answer.

"Then… how should we respond now?"

Hong Lei suddenly turned his head, his tone sharp.

"You're asking me? If you don't understand it, how would I know!?"

The atmosphere in the hall instantly tightened,

like a bowstring drawn to its limit.

At that moment, a voice came from the corner.

Kari.

It was not loud, but every word was clear.

"…I heard that Princess Ning spoke that day."

Buzz—

It was as if an invisible string had suddenly been plucked.

Hong Lei turned abruptly.

"What? What did she say!?"

Farr's expression changed instantly.

After a few seconds of silence, he finally spoke slowly.

"She said… 'Have you come back again?'

And also… 'This time… you seem very angry.'"

Someone gasped.

Hong Lei's face slowly darkened.

His throat tightened.

"That 'you'… is Hong Chen, isn't it."

Farr did not answer immediately.

He closed his eyes briefly.

"…Most likely."

That "most likely" was more unsettling than a firm confirmation.

Hong Lei suddenly slammed his fist onto the table.

BOOM!

The cups trembled from the impact.

"What exactly happened back then!?"

His voice echoed through the hall.

No one could answer.

Because at that moment, everyone vaguely realized something—

what they had lost was not only control over Hong Chen.

They had also lost the right to know the truth of the past.

And the one who knew that truth

was deep within the palace,

opening her eyes for the first time.

Creak…

The doors of the council hall suddenly opened.

The sound was light,

yet the entire hall fell into a terrifying silence.

All the ministers turned.

The man standing at the doorway—

was Kai.

He no longer looked drunk, his eyes no longer unfocused.

His steps were steady.

His clothes were orderly.

His gaze was clear—almost unfamiliar.

It felt as if the air had suddenly been pulled away.

Hong Lei noticed the change first and narrowed his eyes.

Farr's breathing also paused briefly.

Kai slowly walked into the hall.

His footsteps fell upon the stone floor—

once,

then again,

heavy, like knocking against people's hearts.

There was no smell of wine.

Not even the slightest trace.

He ascended the steps before the throne and paused.

His gaze swept across the ministers.

There was no evasion in that gaze.

No emptiness.

Only a cold firmness that had been suppressed for years.

He sat down.

The throne let out a low hum.

Then Kai spoke.

"The Holy City must be strengthened."

His voice was not loud,

yet it struck every heart like a hammer.

The hall fell into complete silence.

Hong Lei suddenly raised his head.

Kari's back stiffened instantly.

Farr's pupils shrank almost imperceptibly.

"Grand General Hong Lei!"

Hong Lei stepped forward and knelt on one knee.

"Present!"

"Deputy General Kari!"

Kari also bowed.

"Present!"

Kai's gaze was calm and decisive.

"Starting today, the entire military structure will be reinforced.

Expand the army.

Reorganize training.

Rebuild the command chain."

"I want the army of the Holy City to be more than soldiers guarding walls."

Hong Lei swallowed and responded in a deep voice.

"As you command!"

Kai turned his gaze to Farr.

"High Priest Farr!"

Farr stepped forward and bowed slightly.

"Present."

"Strengthen the defenses of our vassal states.

Intelligence.

Barriers.

No point may be neglected."

"I do not want to see us unprepared the next time something happens."

Farr replied quietly.

"…Understood."

Kai's gaze swept across the rest of the ministers.

"You!"

"Resources, grain routes, weapons, logistics—

everything that can be mobilized, move it all!"

He paused briefly.

Everyone in the hall held their breath.

They waited—

to see whether he would falter halfway as he had in the past.

Kai did not.

He slowly stood up.

For the first time, his voice carried the true weight of a king.

"The Holy City… must not fall!"

It was not a plea.

Not a slogan.

It was a declaration—

arriving far too late,

yet finally spoken.

Hong Lei looked at him.

What stirred in his heart was not relief,

but something far more complicated.

Have you awakened now…

for the sake of the kingdom?

Or for that person?

Farr lowered his eyes.

His fingers quietly tightened inside his sleeve.

He realized clearly:

Kai's change did not come from courage.

It came from fear.

From the shock of that slap across his face that night.

From finally seeing reality clearly—

Hong Chen

was no longer bound by any royal authority.

The council hall began to function again.

Orders were recorded one by one.

The ministers received their commands and withdrew.

Candlelight flickered over the throne.

Kai's shadow stretched long behind him.

For the first time, it did not tremble.

Yet for the first time—

it also made people uneasy.

Outside the Holy City, in the night,

Hong Chen was walking.

From afar, he looked toward the lights of the city.

He saw soldiers before the gates sharpening their weapons.

He saw Hong Lei and Kari drilling new recruits in the training grounds.

He saw Farr inspecting the barriers beside the altar.

He saw logistics officers running about arranging supplies.

The entire Holy City

seemed to have been awakened by an invisible force.

Under the blue night sky,

Hong Chen smiled faintly.

His voice was low,

tinged with a trace of mockery.

"Now that's more like it."

He withdrew his gaze and looked toward the distant horizon.

It was as if he could see through every barrier and every human heart.

Or as if he were calculating a chessboard long prepared.

The Ten Attendants stood quietly beside him.

Though they said nothing,

they could feel the calm authority radiating from Hong Chen.

"Let's go," Hong Chen said calmly.

"We're heading to City of White Clouds now."

He turned.

His steps were steady.

His silhouette stood out clearly in the night—

as if silently declaring:

No matter how you prepare,

I have already walked ahead

and seen through the entire game.
