Chapter 45 : Warning Signs
The encrypted message arrives at 0147 hours. I'm reviewing vehicle catalog specifications when my datapad chimes with priority alert—Buyer's signature encryption pattern, unmistakable.
My stomach drops before reading message content.
MESSAGE FROM: [ENCRYPTED SOURCE - THE BUYER]
PRIORITY: CRITICAL
SUBJECT: IMMEDIATE THREAT ASSESSMENT
The familiar format from Coruscant. Last time Buyer contacted, they warned about Jedi investigation and bought me two weeks for 100,000 credits. What do they want now?
Skywalker and Kenobi deploying to Mandalore within 48 hours. Ostensibly diplomatic mission consulting Duchess Satine. Actual purpose: locate and apprehend you for Republic crimes.
"Of course. The Pelican delivery was visible to orbital sensors. Led them straight here."
I keep reading:
Death Watch protection may not suffice against two Jedi Council members. Skywalker is personally motivated—views you as war criminal enabling hundreds of deaths. Kenobi is more moderate but follows Anakin's lead on security threats. Probability of confrontation: 87.3%.
The message includes attachments. I open them—classified Jedi Temple communications showing Council meeting from three days ago. Video footage of discussion between Anakin, Obi-Wan, Mace Windu, Rex. Audio recording of private conversation afterwards.
Eight's analysis floods consciousness: "Buyer has unprecedented access to Jedi Temple's most secure systems. Not merely Republic intelligence networks—direct infiltration of Jedi communications. Source suggests either: (1) Deep cover operative within Temple hierarchy, (2) Force-sensitive with infiltration capabilities, (3) Technology beyond known galactic standards. All options concerning."
"How do I avoid them?" I respond via encrypted channel.
The reply is immediate: You don't. You leverage situation for mutual benefit.
Then the hammer drops:
Remember favor owed from Coruscant? Time to collect. I need you to facilitate meeting between me and Pre Vizsla. Death Watch leader is... difficult to approach directly. Your relationship with Bo-Katan provides access I require.
The trap springs shut. Buyer wants infiltration into Death Watch inner circle, using me as unknowing intermediary. Refusing violates debt—System tracks Contract Binding as actual mechanic, not just social obligation. Breach would trigger penalties I haven't tested and don't want to discover.
But accepting makes me conspirator in unknown scheme. Buyer's agenda is opaque. Their capabilities are frightening. Bringing them to Pre Vizsla could be anything from intelligence operation to assassination attempt.
R4's alarm systems trigger. "Master, this is obviously trap. Buyer's request compromises Death Watch security and master's standing within organization. Recommendation: decline and accept Contract Binding penalties."
"What are penalties exactly?"
"Unknown. System documentation is vague: 'Breach of binding contract results in severe consequences proportional to obligation value.' Given Buyer paid 100,000 credits for protection service, penalties could be catastrophic."
Eight disagrees predictably: "This is opportunity, not trap. Buyer has agenda aligned with master's survival—proven by previous assistance. Facilitating meeting provides insight into Buyer's identity and objectives. Additionally, presenting request transparently to Pre Vizsla demonstrates master's loyalty to Death Watch."
"Or gets me killed as conspirator."
"Only if master attempts deception. Transparency converts potential betrayal into intelligence operation."
The door opens without warning. Bo-Katan enters—she's started using my quarters as much as her own, privilege of relationship. One glance at my expression triggers immediate concern.
"What's wrong?"
I show her the datapad. She reads Buyer's message with warrior's tactical assessment, expression darkening progressively.
"Someone with Jedi Temple access wants meeting with Pre Vizsla? That's either Republic spy or something significantly worse." She looks at me directly. "Do you trust this Buyer?"
Honest answer is complicated. "No. But I owe them. They saved me on Coruscant—bought time for extraction when Jedi investigation was closing in. This is the favor they purchased with that service."
"You didn't mention owing favor to mysterious benefactor with access to Republic's highest intelligence."
"Didn't seem relevant until now."
Her jaw tightens—anger that I hid information. "Secrets between us is how relationships die. Also how Death Watch kills traitors. Show me everything."
Decision point. Transparency or deception. Trust built over two months or protective lie.
I show her full message history with Buyer. All communications from Coruscant, the 100,000 credit payment for protection, the intelligence about Jedi investigation, everything.
She reads silently, processing implications with professional focus. Finally: "This person has capabilities beyond any intelligence network I've encountered. They knew about your operations on Coruscant, tracked you to Mandalore, accessed Jedi Temple communications, and delayed Republic investigation through methods that remain unexplained. That's power at galactic scale."
"Yes."
"And you owe them favor that involves infiltrating Death Watch leadership." Not accusation. Statement of tactical situation. "What do you want to do?"
"Honor debt. But not secretly. Tell Pre Vizsla everything, let him decide whether meeting happens. If he refuses, I accept Contract Binding penalties rather than betray organization."
She studies me for long moment. Then nods. "That's acceptable approach. Demonstrates loyalty despite complicated situation." She stands. "We tell him together. Now. Before Jedi arrive and complications multiply."
Death Watch command center is active despite late hour—warriors preparing for operations, tactical planning continuous. Pre Vizsla is reviewing assault scenarios when we enter.
His expression shifts seeing both of us. "This is official visit or personal crisis?"
"Both," Bo-Katan says. "Varro has intelligence about incoming Jedi and complicated debt to mysterious benefactor."
I present everything systematically: Buyer's messages, Coruscant protection purchase, current favor request, Jedi Council deployment. Vizsla listens without interruption, processing each element with leader's strategic assessment.
When I finish, silence stretches. Then: "Let me understand. You owe favor to entity with Jedi Temple access, unknown identity, and agenda requiring meeting with me. This entity also warns that two Jedi Council members are hunting you specifically. And you're presenting this information transparently rather than attempting deception."
"Correct."
"Why transparency? Could have arranged meeting without revealing Buyer's involvement."
"Because that's betrayal. You've protected me, supplied me with base, accepted relationship with Bo-Katan. Repaying that with deception violates everything Mandalorian honor represents. I'd rather face Contract Binding penalties than betray Death Watch."
Vizsla's expression doesn't change but something shifts in his posture—approval or respect, hard to tell. "You honor debts even when inconvenient. That's warrior's philosophy." He activates holographic display showing Mandalore system. "This Buyer... what do they want from meeting?"
"Unknown. They didn't specify objective."
"And you're obligated regardless?"
"System-enforced contract. Breach results in 'severe consequences proportional to obligation value.' I paid 100,000 credits for their service. Penalties could be catastrophic."
"System-enforced?" Vizsla catches term. "You've mentioned 'System' before. What is it?"
"Can't explain interdimensional interface that violates physics. Need cover story."
"My supply network's internal terminology. Binding contracts between suppliers and clients—System tracks obligations and penalizes breach. Standard practice in off-world arms dealing."
He accepts explanation. "So you're trapped between honoring debt to unknown entity and betraying organization protecting you. Unpleasant position."
"Yes."
"Here's my decision." Vizsla leans against tactical display. "I'll meet this Buyer. But on my terms, my location, my security. They come alone, unarmed, submit to scanning. First sign of betrayal, I kill them. And if they are Republic infiltrator, you die with them. Acceptable?"
The threat is casual statement of fact. Mandalorian justice.
"Acceptable."
"Good." He turns to Bo-Katan. "You're responsible for security. Choose location, establish kill-zone, prepare contingencies. Varro coordinates with Buyer—meeting happens in 24 hours maximum before Jedi arrive."
Bo-Katan nods. "Understood."
We're dismissed. Walking back to my base, she's quiet. Processing implications.
"You just bet your life on mysterious benefactor's good behavior," she finally says.
"Already bet my life accepting their favor on Coruscant. This is just payment coming due."
"You're remarkably calm about potential execution."
"Panic doesn't change outcomes. Either Buyer's meeting goes well or I die with them. No middle ground."
She stops walking, pulls me close. "I won't let Pre Vizsla kill you. Even if this Buyer betrays us."
"That's sweet but tactically stupid. If I brought Republic infiltrator to Death Watch leadership, I deserve execution."
"Probably. But I'd still fight for you." She kisses me. "Because apparently I've developed emotional attachment to war profiteer with terrible survival instincts."
Despite everything, I smile. "Your taste in partners is questionable."
"Very questionable." She releases me. "Send message to Buyer. Arrange meeting for tomorrow, 1400 hours, location I'll specify. Tell them Pre Vizsla's terms."
I send encrypted message:
Meeting approved. Tomorrow 1400 hours. Location forthcoming. Terms: you come alone, unarmed, submit to security scanning. First sign of betrayal results in immediate execution—yours and mine. Pre Vizsla's guarantee.
Response is almost instantaneous:
Acceptable. Send coordinates when ready. And Varro? Thank you for honoring our contract. Not many would choose integrity over self-preservation. You're more interesting than initial assessment suggested.
The message ends there. No explanation of objectives. No preview of discussion topics. Just acknowledgment that I'm honoring debt despite enormous personal risk.
"They agreed," I tell Bo-Katan.
"Of course they did. This was always their plan—leverage your honor against you." She activates comms. "But we'll be ready. Death Watch doesn't lose on home territory."
That night, I review the situation with both AI advisors. R4 projects cascading disaster scenarios. Eight analyzes strategic opportunities. Neither has definitive recommendation.
"Master's choice was optimal given constraints," Eight concludes. "Transparency with Pre Vizsla converts potential betrayal into controlled intelligence operation. If Buyer is hostile, Death Watch eliminates threat. If Buyer is neutral or allied, master gains powerful connection. Risk is acceptable."
"Risk is execution if variables align incorrectly," R4 counters. "However, master's alternative—Contract Binding breach—could be worse. Lesser of evils rather than optimal outcome."
"That's my entire strategy summarized: choosing lesser evils until hopefully arriving at survival."
"Accurate assessment of master's methodology," both AIs respond simultaneously.
Bo-Katan returns with location coordinates—abandoned mining facility in Concordia's deep levels. Defensible, isolated, multiple exit routes. She's positioned strike team in concealment, established kill-zones, prepared for every contingency including betrayal.
"If this goes wrong, I'll delay execution long enough for you to reach extraction point," she tells me. "Won't stop it, but might buy time."
"Appreciate calculated partial betrayal of commanding officer."
"That's love, apparently. Tactical inefficiency motivated by emotional attachment." But she's smiling slightly. "Try not to die tomorrow. Would be inconvenient."
"I'll prioritize survival."
"Good."
Morning comes without rest. Just preparation for meeting that determines whether I'm honored contractor or condemned conspirator.
The Buyer arrives at exactly 1400 hours.
