Chapter X – The Weight of Fate

The morning was bright, yet the wind carried a sense of inevitability, as if deciding the fates of all who stood in the courtyard.

FEI FEI stood tall, her posture elegant, her eyes narrow and calculating as they rested on her fiancé, Zhang Lie—a man with a hot temper, yet a heart that deeply loved her. Today, though, his energy felt muted, drawn toward Ning, who now stood dressed in ceremonial gray. Ning's attire was simple yet dignified, embroidered with faint silver threads that glimmered in the sunlight, his posture a mix of pride and sorrow.

"Don't…" FEI FEI warned softly, her voice calm, but carrying the quiet authority that few dared to defy.

Zhang Wei, hiding behind a pillar, caught her words and froze. Sang Sang, standing nearby, attempted to catch his attention with a soft nudge, but FEI FEI's eyes remained fixed on Ning. Her smile was gentle, yet her gaze was empty, unreadable to anyone but Zhang Wei.

He knew, though no one else did, how deep her obsession with Ning ran. It was not a simple affection—it burned like fire, thrilling and dangerous to anyone who dared stand in her path. Zhang Wei could only swallow his fear; there was no ease between him and FEI FEI, only the tense acknowledgment of her power and his own helplessness.

Ning understood his role. Elder Mi had already informed him that the wedding preparations were underway. From tomorrow, he would be called Bi instead of Zhang—a name of honor, no disgrace. His eyes lingered on his family, the weight of leaving them pressing into his chest.

FEI FEI's voice sliced through his thoughts, calm but deliberate:

"You…," she pointed at Zhang Wei, "don't worry. I'm not interested in something so delicate. I only find your fear… fascinating."

Zhang Wei could only shake his head, unable to speak. FEI FEI's gaze remained fixed on him, piercing and cold.

"No problem. Your core is a wish, and your fate speaks of your death. Consider this a warning from a future brother-in-law. Your destiny is hard and tragic—be careful."

Zhang Lie, standing nearby, watched FEI FEI with quiet frustration. He did not fancy the female protagonist, but seeing FEI FEI's sorrow as Ning prepared to leave tore at his chest. He felt powerless, useless to protect her from the heartbreak of losing her brother to a fate she had chosen.

Zhang Wei's family arrived next, resplendent in their ceremonial attire. Zhang Wei's robe was pale blue, embroidered with silver threads tracing clouds and ripples, a thin jade pendant swaying at his collar. His mother glimmered like sapphire in a deep blue gown adorned with golden phoenixes, pearls and jade beads cascading from her hair. His sisters wore gowns of lavender and rose, with flowing silk and delicate diamond-studded hairpins. Their beauty was undeniable, commanding attention, yet Zhang Wei's tension was a sharp contrast to their elegance.

Fei Fei moved beside Zhang Lie, delicate yet sorrowful. Her silver-gray gown shimmered faintly with plum blossom embroidery. Jade rings adorned her fingers, and her gold-and-pearl hairpins framed her face. Her sadness weighed heavily on Zhang Lie, a constant ache he could not soothe.

The bride, the female protagonist, remained calm and untouchable. Her charcoal-gray gown with silver frost-like embroidery caught the lantern light. Diamond-studded jade hairpins and a pale diamond necklace reflected every movement she made. She radiated authority, her presence commanding the attention of the entire courtyard without a single gesture.

The ceremony began. Music floated through the courtyard as officiants chanted, Ning kneeling gracefully before the bride, performing the rites with quiet dignity. Zhang Lie's eyes remained locked on Fei Fei, helpless as the sorrow in her eyes deepened. Zhang Wei's hands were tightly clasped, jade pendant swinging as his fear rippled through him.

Finally, Ning rose and took the bride's hand. The vows were exchanged, the crowd erupted in muted applause, and the ceremony concluded. The celebration began, lanterns glowing like floating stars, silk gowns and glittering jewelry shimmering with every step. Yet Ning's eyes remained distant, the weight of his new identity pressing heavily on his shoulders.

As the night deepened and guests departed, the bride led Ning to the inner chamber. The subtle sedatives in his earlier drink made resistance impossible. His body felt heavy, his mind dulled, yet he remained aware of the luxurious surroundings: lanterns casting golden light, layers of embroidered silk sheets on the dark mahogany bed, plush cushions of velvet and silk framing the edges. The faint scent of sandalwood and jasmine permeated the air, making the chamber feel intimate, ceremonial, and suffocating.

"This is the night you are now bound to me," the bride said softly, her diamond-studded hairpins catching the lantern glow, her presence absolute. "Consent is no longer yours to command."

Ning tried to resist, to speak, to assert himself, but his body betrayed him. The bride's hand rested lightly on his shoulder, guiding him, adjusting the jade pin in his hair with a delicate touch, commanding obedience without force. Her calm dominance was absolute, her authority undeniable.

Outside, Zhang Lie paced quietly, helpless, feeling Fei Fei's sorrow press against him like a weight. Zhang Wei's fear pressed in from afar, imagining the scene, powerless to intervene. Inside, Ning's body and mind were trapped between obedience and fogged awareness, the silk sheets beneath him and the intoxicating scent of the chamber emphasizing his helplessness.

The night stretched on, every moment a demonstration of the bride's authority. Ning's exhaustion grew, his will dulled by drugs and inevitability, and by dawn, the final rites of the wedding night were complete.

He lay on the bed, drained, fully aware that he was now Bi, utterly bound to the bride's power. Her dominance was absolute, her calm authority a constant reminder of the helplessness he must endure.

Outside, the estate was quiet, lanterns swaying in the wind. Zhang Lie's fists were clenched in frustration, Fei Fei's eyes glistened with sorrow, and Zhang Wei's fear lingered like a shadow, pressing against the edges of his consciousness. Inside the chamber, silk, jewels, incense, and authority bore witness to a union forged not by choice, but by fate—immutable and unyielding.
