The next day, the Empress Dowager made an excuse to go see a musical.
The entire, vast theater had been booked out. An old woman sat alone, poised and upright in the first row of the grandstand.
The theater's main doors were pushed open from the outside, and a middle-aged woman walked in.
"Mary Preston has arrived," Hailey whispered.
The Empress Dowager looked toward the woman who had just entered, her gaze lingering. Mary Preston was, undeniably, very beautiful. Even at her age, her skin was still dewy and radiant. She had a sharp chin, slender, willow-like eyebrows, and a pair of bright, spirited eyes with almost no fine lines.
Upon closer inspection, she realized that Ashley Bowen really didn't look much like her.
She'd always felt there was something familiar about Ashley Bowen's face. In fact, she bore a slight resemblance to June, who had passed away from illness.
