Mika Summers didn't know how long she'd been crouching on the floor, or how long she'd cried before she finally stopped.
When she rose to her feet, her legs were completely numb.
But she had to pull herself together. Silas Kent would be here to get her soon.
She could only let her vulnerability show when she was alone.
She gripped the doorknob, about to open the door and leave, but a small, dark figure on the bed made her freeze.
Kiki had woken up at some point. He was sitting on the bed, watching her.
Mika Summers pulled her hand back from the door. She quickly wiped away her tears and forced a smile as she walked over to Kiki. "I'm sorry, did Mommy wake you?"
"—" Kiki shook his head, looking at her with a hint of fear.
Seeing the look on his face, Mika Summers's tears began to fall uncontrollably again. "Kiki, do you not like Mommy?"
"—" Kiki didn't answer. He just stared at her, unblinking.
