Nathaniel Nathan felt a sense of satisfaction at her words, but he feigned impatience. "I get it. After I leave, I won't even glance at another female."

After finally coaxing Master Nathan to leave, she felt mentally and physically exhausted. 'Great. After all that commotion, there's no way I can calm down and read.' She simply took off her clothes, got into bed, and prepared to sleep.
Then, to her utter dismay, she realized she was actually worried about him!
She was worried he might encounter danger on his mission. Worried his post would be too remote. Worried about whether he'd have enough to eat and a warm place to sleep.
Vera Xavier sat up and pressed her temples. 'I must be a real masochist,' she thought. 'After everything he put me through, he's barely gone, and I'm already starting to miss him.'
