Sylvia Vaughn was holding hands with a boy as they walked right past Joanna Jacobs. Sylvia probably didn't see Joanna; her eyes were completely fixed on the boy beside her.
Hand in hand, they headed toward the very bar Joanna had just left. Sylvia looked thrilled, chattering excitedly about the plot of the movie they had just seen.
Joanna Jacobs stood rooted to the spot, watching Sylvia and the boy walk further and further away. A moment ago, Yvonne Vaughn had said on the phone that Sylvia was staying at a female classmate's house, yet here she was with a boy. Obviously, Sylvia had lied to her family.
The Vaughn family had a curfew requiring Sylvia to be home before nine o'clock, but Scott Vaughn never got in the way of her spending time with classmates. As long as Sylvia said she was staying the night at a friend's house, Scott would usually agree.
