Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – First Skirmish

The sun slipped beneath the treeline, bathing the inside of Café Sazanami in the cozy, amber light of vintage pendant lamps. Outside, the lake lay still and dark, its surface gleaming like polished obsidian.

The café was peaceful, with only the gentle scratching of Kaguya's pen breaking the silence, accompanied by the steady hum of the espresso machine and the occasional soft clink of Hachiman's spoon against his ceramic mug.

Then, the brass bell hanging above the door gave a cheerful chime.

It wasn't the friendly, inviting chime you'd expect from a familiar face. Instead, it was a sharp, jarring clang, the kind that made it seem like the door had been flung open with far more force than necessary.

Four men casually strolled into the café, the door chiming softly as they entered and the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee welcoming them inside.

They sported sleek, dark suits that screamed luxury, yet hung awkwardly over their shoulders, betraying the rigid, unnatural bulk of the body armor hidden underneath.

Their hair was cut short, their stances stiff, and their eyes moved across the room with the cool, deliberate menace of seasoned hunters.

Hachiman Hikigaya remained perfectly still, showing no reaction as he leisurely set his mug down, his lifeless, dead fish eyes following the newcomers with quiet detachment.

Ah, he mused, his thoughts laced with a weary, almost sarcastic sense of resignation.

The plot is really starting to heat up. I had a feeling that the protagonist's calm, everyday life was only the calm before the storm, just a prelude to an all-out mafia war.

The leader, a tall man marked by a jagged scar slicing through his left eyebrow, strode forward with deliberate steps, the sharp clicks of his shoes echoing off the polished wooden floorboards.

He ignored the menu completely, and didn't spare a glance at the stunning lake view. Instead, his eyes were fixed directly on Jun.

"Izanami Jun," the scarred man muttered, his voice a rough, gravelly rasp that seemed almost too loud for the calm, hushed air that filled the room.

My name is Kuroda, and I'm here on behalf of the Nakiri Central Directorate. We've had our eyes on you for some time now.

Behind the counter, Jun kept wiping down the espresso machine, his motions smooth, efficient, and utterly unhurried, as if each pass of the cloth was just part of a quiet rhythm he'd long since mastered.

"The Directorate doesn't typically send field agents to a quiet countryside café," Jun remarked, his tone calm and courteous. "Unless, of course, you're here for the evening coffee special. Unfortunately, we're fresh out of the two-day bread."

Kuroda's eye twitched with barely restrained intensity. "Don't toy with me, boy." His voice cut through the air like a knife.

"Senzaemon himself visited this humble spot, tasted your creations, and now the Directorate is certain you're keeping closely guarded culinary secrets they believe are the rightful property of the Nakiri estate."

With an angry expression, Kuroda declared, "You will hand over your grandfather's treasured recipe books and sign a non-compete agreement."

He then continued, "If you go against us, we'll buy this land, tear this building down completely, and make sure you never step foot in a kitchen anywhere in Japan ever again."

The menace lingered in the atmosphere, dense and suffused with a noxious weight that seemed to seep into every breath, casting an oppressive pall over the surroundings.

Seated in the corner armchair, Kaguya's head lifted sharply, her crimson eyes igniting with a sudden, fierce anger.

She began to rise, her aristocratic pride surging in response to the blatant act of extortion, when a hand, gentle yet unyielding, descended to rest upon her shoulder, holding her in place.

It was Hayasaka who had moved. In an instant, the blonde girl shifted from her laid-back cashier stance to her full-on Professional Maid/Operative mode.

Her deep blue eyes glinted like shards of ice, cold and unyielding. "Kaguya-sama," Hayasaka murmured, her voice so soft it was almost lost to the air, yet imbued with an unmistakable authority that left no room for defiance. "Please, remain seated."

Jun finally paused in his cleaning, setting aside the task as he folded the damp linen cloth with care and placed it neatly on the counter. His gaze shifted first to Kuroda, then drifted to the trio of men standing on either side of him.

His system-enhanced senses kicked in, instantly firing off a quick yet frighteningly precise diagnostic.

Target one is Kuroda, with a noticeably high center of gravity and a right leg that favors the knee, likely due to an old injury. Target two is heavyset, showing a slower reaction time. Targets three and four are positioned on the flanks, but they lack training in close-quarters spatial awareness.

The System's Defensive Skill Tree, freshly unlocked and seamlessly woven into his muscle memory, effortlessly guided him with the best possible angles and movements for swift neutralization.

It wasn't just a collection of combat statistics; it was an artful display of kinetic redirection. Jun didn't merely know how to fight—he understood how to break down human biomechanics with the smooth precision of a concert pianist performing a sonata.

"I'm afraid I can't do that Jun said, his voice as courteous as if he were turning down an offer for a second spoonful of sugar. "My grandfather's recipes are part of his legacy, and this cafe is where I keep that legacy alive." He added with quiet conviction.

Jun looked straight into Kuroda's eyes, his expression easy and relaxed, as if the man glaring at him was nothing more than a nobody. "I must ask you to leave," he said calmly.

Kuroda smirked, flexing his fingers until the joints popped audibly. "Get a hold of him, and start by breaking his hands."

The three thugs suddenly lunged forward, their movements quick and aggressive as they closed the distance in an instant.

"Hayasaka," Jun said, his voice calm and steady, not the slightest hint of strain or volume. Yet the quiet, unwavering authority in his words sliced through the air like a. "Take Kaguya upstairs to the second-floor lounge, lock the door, and stay put. Don't come down until I call for you."

Hayasaka didn't waste a second. She didn't ask why or pause to think. In one swift motion, she took hold of Kaguya's arm and urged her forward. "Come on, Kaguya-sama. Now."

"Wait, Jun!" Kaguya exclaimed, her crimson eyes widening in alarm. "You can't possibly take them all on—there are four of them!"

"Go," Jun said, his lips curling into a faint, reassuring smile that stood in stark contrast to the unnerving, icy calm that lingered in his eyes.

Hayasaka all but hauled the protesting heiress toward the stairwell, her grip firm and unyielding. Just as they reached the door, Kaguya came to an abrupt halt, glancing back over her shoulder to peer through the narrow gap in the doorframe.

Her heart pounded against her ribs like a frantic bird trying to break free. She thought she'd find Jun shrinking back in fear, and half-expected Hayasaka to already be reaching for a weapon.

Instead, she watched as Jun casually reached for a fresh, white cotton tea towel lying on the counter.

The first thug, a burly man with broad shoulders and a thick frame, lunged forward and made a grab for Jun's collar.

Jun didn't back away; instead, he stepped right into the man's guard. With an easy of his wrist, he pulled the tea towel tight, the fabric snapping sharply in the air.

The cotton snapped through the air like a whip, coiling neatly around the thug's thick wrist. Without missing a beat, Jun spun on his heel, effortlessly redirecting the man's own charging force back at him.

Then, he yanked the towel down with a swift motion, while at the same time hooking his leg behind the thug's ankle in one fluid move.

The man was sent sprawling through the air, landing hard on the wooden floor with a jarring thud that echoed in the room. Before he could even process the shock or pain, Jun had already placed his foot on the man's chest—steady and unyielding—holding him firmly in place.

"Watch your step," Jun said kindly to the groaning man. "I just finished mopping."

The second and third thugs came at him at the same time, one charging in from the left while the other closed in from the right.

Jun moved with a blur of effortless, almost unnerving grace, his motions smooth and unbroken, like a stream winding seamlessly around rocks. He slipped under a clumsy, swinging punch from the left, his apron strings trailing in the air behind him.

He grabbed the attacking arm and, with unerring precision, pressed his fingers into the radial nerve cluster. The thug's arm went limp in an instant, his grip failing as his fingers splayed open.

Grabbing the man's limp arm like a handle, Jun twisted him sharply and sent him stumbling straight into the oncoming second attacker. The two crashed together in a chaotic mess of flailing limbs and crumpled expensive suits.

As they stumbled back, one of them accidentally sent a heavy glass water pitcher teetering off the edge of the counter.

Without missing a beat or glancing over, Jun's left hand darted out, snatching the pitcher in mid-air. The water inside stayed perfectly still, not a ripple in sight, as he calmly set it back on the counter.

"Easy there," Jun said quietly, tugging at the edges of his cuffs with deliberate care. "These happen to be vintage, you know."

From her spot on the stairwell, Kaguya froze mid-breath, her chest tight as if the air itself had vanished. Her deep crimson eyes widened to their fullest, and her lips hung open in pure, unfiltered astonishment.

She had seen Hayasaka fight. Hayasaka was efficient, brutal, and military-trained. But this... this was something else entirely.

Jun wasn't merely engaged in a fight; he was moving with a fluid grace, each strike and step blending together like a choreographed dance, his body weaving effortlessly between offense and defense as if the battle itself was a rhythm only he could hear.

He moved with a chilling, effortless elegance, like a top-tier predator so far beyond the reach of its prey that there was no need for haste or exertion.

With his apron still neatly in place, not a bead of sweat on his brow nor a hint of strain in his voice, Jun effortlessly dismantled the trained enforcers. He moved with the calm, unhurried precision of a butler shooing away a few bothersome flies, every motion polite yet disarmingly effective.

A strange, searing warmth spread through Kaguya's chest, not merely the comfort of knowing he was safe, but something far deeper—a heady, exhilarating awe that left her breathless and unsteady.

Her heart pounded in a wild, uneven beat, each thud sending a rush of energy through her that left her legs feeling shaky and unsteady.

She couldn't believe how amazing he was, the thought knocking the wind of her and sending her carefully maintained poise tumbling to pieces.

He is far more than a mere practitioner of magic; he is a formidable and fearsome, a being whose very presence commands both awe and dread.

He is, in every sense, a monster—my monster.

A hot, flustered blush rushed across her cheeks, and she hastily clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a small, unexpected squeak.

Kuroda let out a furious roar from the floor, yanking a telescopic steel baton from inside his jacket, the metal snapping into place with a sharp, echoing clack.

"You little punk!" he spat, charging forward with a brutal overhead swing to crash down on Jun's skull.

Jun's eyes narrowed, the polite, customer-service smile slipping just enough to expose the frigid calculating void of Absolute Mastery lurking beneath.

Rather than evading, he deliberately advanced, positioning himself within the arc of the swing.

Jun's hand shot up, intercepting Kuroda's wrist mid-swing with unerring precision.

The force behind the blow was enough to shatter bone, yet Jun's grip, unyielding as a steel vise, absorbed the kinetic energy with ease, a testament to his augmented physical prowess.

The sudden halt of his strike caused Kuroda's eyes to widen in disbelief, his arm frozen in the air as if caught by an immovable force.

With his right hand, Jun executed two swift, meticulously controlled strikes. The first was an open-palm blow delivered to the brachial plexus on Kuroda's shoulder, instantly numbing and incapacitating the entire arm.

The second maneuver involved a closed-fist strike executed with precise control, delivering just the necessary amount of force to interfere with the function of the vagus nerve located in the neck.

Kuroda's eyes rolled back as the baton slipped from his grasp, striking the floor with a sharp clatter. His legs gave way beneath him, and he crumpled to the ground like a marionette whose strings had been severed, emitting soft snores before his body fully came to rest.

In an instant, a profound and palpable silence enveloped the entire cafe, as though the very air itself had been stilled.

The confrontation lasted precisely fourteen seconds. Three assailants lay sprawled on the ground, writhing in pain as they clutched at dislocated shoulders and limbs rendered numb from the swift, decisive blows.

As for the leader, he lay unconscious, with not a single drop of blood spilled nor a single piece of furniture disturbed.

Jun stood at the center of the room, his posture composed and deliberate. With precise movements, he lifted a pristine white tea towel, brushing away an almost imperceptible speck of dust from his sleeve before folding the cloth with meticulous care.

Only then did he lower his gaze, his eyes settling on the men below, their bodies writhing in discomfort, their groans echoing softly through the space.

"I apologize for the bluntness," Jun said, his voice settling back into a warm, polite rumble. "But you're disrupting the ambiance of my cafe. Please take your colleague and leave." His eyes narrowed into half-moon slits, an eerie smile playing at his lips.

"And... if you return he paused, holding back his words as the air around him seemed to drop several degrees, a chill settling in. His eyes, half-lidded, glinted with a dangerous aura. "I won't be as gentle with the floorboards."

The two thugs who were still on their feet scrambled upright, their faces drained of all color in sheer terror. Without a word, they hooked their hands under Kuroda's arms and hastily dragged his limp, unconscious body toward the door.

They didn't say a word, just quietly slipped off into the night, the cheerful chime of the brass bell trailing behind them.

Jun strolled over to the door, secured the deadbolt with a firm click, and casually turned the sign around to read Closed.

He inhaled deeply, allowing the Defensive Skill Tree to fade quietly into the recesses of his mind. The chilling, intimidating aura dissipated, giving way to the familiar, comforting warmth and steady presence of a humble cafe owner.

He approached the stairwell door with measured steps and tapped lightly upon its surface. "Hayasaka, Kaguya, the area is secure."

The door swung open without hesitation, and Hayasaka stepped out, her gaze sweeping over the room.

She noticed the scuff marks on the floor and the vacant spot where the thugs had stood moments ago. Her jaw clenched slightly as she took it all in. "Izanami-san, are you alright?"

"I'm fine," Jun said with a reassuring smile. "It's merely a minor inconvenience, and I will ensure the floor is polished and restored to its proper condition by morning."

Kaguya stepped out from behind her, her crimson eyes fixed firmly on Jun. Her cheeks still burned with a fierce blush, and her heart continued to perform wild acrobatics in her chest.

Her gaze lingered on his hands—hands that, mere moments ago, had incapacitated four men with swift precision—before rising to meet the composed, almost serene expression on his face.

"You..." Kaguya began, her voice softer than usual, almost hesitant.

She cleared her throat, attempting to restore her usual air of superiority. "Well, you managed that… decently enough. I guess it's a good thing you've got some basic self-defense skills. It would be a real hassle if you got hurt and couldn't make my breakfast."

Jun let out a light chuckle as he made his way back behind the counter, a small smile playing on his lips. "I'll remember that, Kaguya. Thanks for looking out for me," he said, his tone warm and appreciative.

"I was not concerned!" she retorted, spinning on her heel before striding back to her armchair. She sank into it, lifting her book and pretending to be engrossed, using its pages to conceal the amused smile tugging at her lips.

Hayasaka observed the interaction between the maid and the principal with an expressionless face, then shifted her gaze toward Jun. A small, respectful nod was exchanged between them, subtle yet full of unspoken understanding.

Hayasaka could recognize a master instantly, and without drawing attention to herself, she quietly returned to the register. With practiced ease, she picked up her clipboard, moving as though she hadn't just been hiding away on the second floor moments earlier.

Jun grabbed his cloth and casually made his way toward the corner booth.

In the middle of all the chaos, Hachiman Hikigaya remained exactly where he was, as if planted firmly in place.

He hadn't moved a muscle, his fingers still wrapped tightly around his mug. His dull, dead-fish eyes stayed locked on Jun, wide and unblinking, giving no hint that he even noticed the noise around him.

Jun strolled over and picked up Hachiman's empty mug with an apologetic smile. "Sorry about all the noise. How about a coffee refill?"

Hachiman watched the mug as Jun picked it up, his gaze lingering for a moment before drifting to the floor, where faint scuff marks from the thugs' shoes still marred the surface. His eyes shifted to the door, then returned to Jun, a quiet tension hanging in the air.

His inner voice, typically a relentless torrent of sarcasm and sharp critiques of the world around him, had fallen into an unexpected and absolute silence.

He didn't even bother to take off his apron, Hachiman realized, the sheer absurdity of it all finally cutting through his shock.

One moment, he was catching a falling glass with effortless precision; the next, he was using a tea towel to snap a man's wrist like it was nothing.

What the hell was this guy? Some kind of final boss? A secret government experiment? Did he pick up his fighting skills from watching too much butler anime?

Hachiman glanced at Jun's face and noticed the easy, genuine smile—just the warm, welcoming kind you'd expect from a friendly café owner.

It wasn't forced or overdone, just simple and kind. In that quiet moment, something clicked for Hachiman. The tension he'd been holding onto melted away, and he realized, almost with surprise, that he wasn't afraid at all.

All his life, Hachiman had assumed the world was a harsh place. He figured people would always be selfish, aggressive, and insincere.

But the man standing before him...

Had just defended his place with a mix of terrifying precision and graceful brutality, only to casually follow it up by asking if he wanted another cup of coffee.

There was no hidden agenda, no manipulative game at play. He was simply, at his core, a genuinely good person.

Yet, beneath that kindness...

There was an almost frightening level of power that made him seem unstoppable.

Hachiman exhaled slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing as they sank from their usual slouched position. A faint, unforced smirk curved at the edges of his lips, carrying a rare hint of sincerity.

"Yeah," Hachiman said, his voice slipping back into its familiar flat, deadpan tone. "Make it a double. And... thanks for the entertainment. Honestly, it beat anything on TV."

Jun's smile grew even broader as he cheerfully replied, "Coming right up!"

Jun made his way back to the espresso machine, while Hachiman settled deeper into his booth, his gaze drifting out the window toward the shadowy expanse of the lake. The black SUVs had vanished without a trace.

The cafe had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the coffee was delightfully sweet, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the moment.

You know what?, Hachiman mused as he let his eyes drift shut.

I think I'm going to like it here.
