Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Iron and Oaths

Ironclad did not wait for heroes.

The city moved as it always did—

steel ringing against steel, disciplined footsteps crossing stone streets, the air carrying the familiar scent of metal and sweat. Nothing paused to acknowledge their return.

Kazuki and Renji passed through the gates without announcement.

They returned the same way they had left—quietly.

Only now, they carried more than swords on their backs. They carried things they had seen.

Renji glanced around, a faint smile forming on his face.

"Feels like Ironclad never changes," he said.

Kazuki didn't answer.

Ironclad didn't change easily. People did. Sometimes without realizing it.

The Association headquarters stood at the city's center—stone reinforced with steel. Plain in design, but heavy with authority.

Decisions made inside these walls shaped the balance of the kingdoms.

They were summoned in without ceremony.

No praise. No celebration.

The elders listened as they reported the tournament—early clashes, rising tensions, and a quiet unease that Kazuki struggled to put into words. What unsettled him could not be neatly written onto parchment. In the end, it was recorded as irrelevant.

Their next assignment was given.

Four kingdoms.

Maintain balance.

Resolve conflicts before they became wars.

Renji accepted it easily, nodding as if it were routine. For him, missions were about people, not politics.

Kazuki took the parchment from the table and read the names.

Sunheaven.

Drakenspire.

Shadowfen.

His eyes lingered on the last one for a moment longer than necessary.

He didn't know why.

When they stepped outside, evening had begun to settle over Ironclad. The steel towers reflected the fading light, glowing faintly orange beneath the sky.

Renji stretched his arms.

"Looks like a long journey ahead."

Kazuki looked upward, watching the sky darken.

Some journeys began long before the first step was taken—

quietly, without warning.

And far away, beyond frost and shadow,

someone had already begun to wait.
