16 The office
The Hokage's office was quiet again, the frantic, explosive energy of the morning's battlefield replaced by the rhythmic, steady scratch of a fountain pen. Sunlight filtered through the large semi-circular windows, catching dust motes that danced in the quiet air.
Tsunade Senju signed the final document with a decisive flick of her wrist, pressed the official Hokage seal into the red ink pad, and stamped the parchment with a heavy, satisfying thud. She slid the neat stack of paperwork across the polished mahogany desk.
"Well," Tsunade said, leaning forward and resting her chin on her interlaced fingers. Her sharp amber eyes locked onto him. "That makes it official. As of this moment, you are registered in the Konoha military archives as Uzumaki Naruto, Jōnin of the Hidden Leaf."
Naruto stared at the documents for a long moment before his fingers closed around the edges. He handled the parchment with uncharacteristic gentleness, as if anchoring himself to the reality of the paper before it could vanish like a genjutsu. The official stamp, gleaming damply in the sunlight, carried the weight of everything he had bled for over the last three years.
"And here is your flak jacket procurement authorization," Tsunade added, sliding a smaller, stamped voucher across the desk. "Take it to the logistics department. It's the tangible proof that you've finally made it."
A grin broke across Naruto's face—wide, brilliant, and completely stripping away the hardened, aloof persona he had displayed on the training field. "Thanks, Auntie Tsunade."
Standing slightly to his left, Temari folded her arms across her chest. A small, genuinely proud smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she looked at him. "Congratulations again, Naruto. You earned every bit of it today."
Shizune stepped closer from her post near the filing cabinets, her dark eyes remarkably soft. "I still can't quite bring myself to believe how much you've grown, Naruto. It feels like just yesterday you barely reached my waist, running around the village causing trouble. Now you're standing almost a full head taller than me."
Naruto's ears instantly turned a bright crimson. He reached up, vigorously scratching the back of his head as a sheepish expression replaced his pride. "Heh… come on, Shizune-neechan, don't go making it weird in front of guests."
From his spot leaning against the heavy wooden bookshelf, Jiraiya let out a low chuckle, his arms folded across his broad chest. "All right, brat. You'd better get moving. You've got a lot of administrative errands to run, and you definitely don't want to be late for your own celebration party."
Naruto blinked, checking the heavy iron clock mounted on the wall. "The guys said eight o'clock at Choji's place. I've still got six hours. That's plenty of time." He paused, turning his head slightly to look at the Sunagakure kunoichi beside him. "You're coming to the dinner too, right, Temari?"
Temari blinked, caught entirely off guard. Her arms shifted slightly as her posture grew defensive. "Me? Naruto, that's a gathering for your academy friends to celebrate your promotion. Wouldn't it be incredibly imposing for a foreign representative to just barge in?"
Naruto shook his head immediately, dismissing her concern with a wave of his hand. "No way. You came out to the training grounds specifically to watch my evaluation match. You stood by me and cheered me on while everyone else was doubting me. It'd be straight-up rude of me not to invite you. Besides, it's a public barbecue restaurant, and none of those guys are going to complain about extra company. I won't take no for an answer."
Temari stared at him for a second, reading the absolute sincerity in his blue eyes. The defensive tension left her shoulders, and her smile returned, softer this time. "All right. If you're that insistent, I'll gladly come."
Tsunade watched the exchange, leaning back heavily into the leather upholstery of her high-backed chair. Her expression grew thoughtful, and then a practical question crossed her mind. "By the way, Naruto… have you actually checked in on your old apartment yet? I know you only arrived back in the village yesterday."
Naruto froze, his hand dropping from his hair. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "Uh… wait. That place is still standing? Nobody tore it down?"
Tsunade raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow, her voice dipping into a dangerous register. "What exactly do you mean by 'is it still standing'?"
"Well, I was gone for three whole years," Naruto explained slowly, shrugging his shoulders. "I just figured the landlord would have legally evicted me and sold off whatever junk I left behind. I completely stopped paying the monthly rent the day I left the village gates with Jiraiya-sensei."
Shizune's brow furrowed, a look of profound administrative confusion crossing her face. "Rent? Landlord? Naruto… what are you talking about? According to the absolute core property records of Konohagakure, you own that apartment unit outright. The Fourth Hokage secured the title, and it is registered entirely under your legal name. There is no landlord. There never has been."
Naruto went entirely rigid. He stared at Shizune, the color draining from his face as a sudden, horrific realization began to click into place.
"…Then who the hell was that old guy who came knocking on my door every single month and taking cash from me?"
The room went dead silent. The only sound was the faint ticking of the wall clock.
Jiraiya straightened up from the bookshelf, his playful demeanor vanishing in an instant. Temari shifted her stance, her eyes narrowing as she listened to the dark undercurrents of Naruto's childhood.
Naruto continued, his voice rising in pitch as years of regular, unquestioned routine suddenly exposed themselves as a massive fraud. "He showed up on the first of every single month! He took the vast majority of my basic orphan allowance when I was a little kid. Later on, after I graduated, he started taking a massive cut directly from my Genin mission payouts. He even told me he was raising the rent by ten percent every time I missed a payment deadline because of an extended out-of-village deployment!"
Tsunade's jaw tightened so hard the muscles in her cheek visibly twitched. The desk beneath her hands groaned as her hidden physical strength began to leak out.
"Let's back up this conversation and establish the immediate timeline," Tsunade said, her voice terrifyingly quiet, carrying the precise, chilling calm of a combat medic assessing a catastrophic wound. "If you didn't return to that apartment last night, Naruto… where exactly did you sleep?"
"At the standard shinobi transit hotel down the street—the same one where Temari's staying," Naruto replied, completely unfazed by the sudden drop in room temperature. "I walked her back to the lobby last night, checked the rates, and booked myself a basic room for the week. I was honestly planning to ask Jiraiya-sensei to help me look for a new place to live after the evaluation match was finished."
Tsunade's amber eyes snapped sideways, locking directly onto the legendary toad sage. "Jiraiya. Did he ever mention this landlord to Sarutobi-sensei?"
"Once," Naruto answered before Jiraiya could speak, his tone dropping into a dull, flat memory. "I complained to the Old Man Third about it during my academy days because I didn't have enough money left over to buy fresh groceries. He looked really stressed, smoked his pipe, and told me he would personally look into the matter. But nothing ever came of it. The guy just showed up the very next month looking way angrier, telling me that if I went crying to the Hokage again, he'd throw all my clothes into the street."
Tsunade's fingers curled into the solid oak edge of her desk. The reinforced wood creaked violently, hairline fractures spider-webbing outward from beneath her fingernails.
Temari stood entirely still, stunned by the casual, matter-of-fact way Naruto detailed the systemic extortion he had faced as a child. To her, Naruto was a powerhouse, a hero who had brought down Gaara's worst demons. Hearing that a common civilian had routinely robbed him under the guise of authority made her blood boil.
"…I see," Tsunade said quietly.
She closed her eyes, took a long, deep breath to re-center her raging chakra, and straightened her posture. When she opened her eyes, the fury had been replaced by absolute, unyielding authority.
"You are not returning to that apartment, Naruto. And you are checking out of that hotel immediately. You are moving into the Senju clan estate today."
Naruto blinked, completely thrown off balance by the decree. "Wait, what? The Senju estate? Isn't that place massive? Why would I go live there?"
"Because it belongs to you just as much as it belongs to me," Tsunade said firmly, her tone leaving absolutely no room for argument or debate. "Let's correct your understanding of history right now. My maternal grandmother, Mito, was a direct daughter of the Uzumaki clan. My own father was half Uzumaki by blood. The bond between our clans isn't just a political alliance printed on our flak jackets; it is a bond of bone and marrow. By blood, by lineage, and by absolute right, the Senju estate is your home. I am the head of the house, and I am telling you to move in."
Naruto laughed awkwardly, scratching his cheek. "I mean… if you're sure, Auntie. I don't really have much stuff to move anyway. Just a couple of scrolls, some spare orange tracksuits, and my training gear."
Shizune tilted her head, trying to steer the room away from the dark topic of Naruto's childhood exploiters. "Wait a minute, Naruto… during the debrief, you briefly mentioned that you were looking into buying your own independent property in the commercial district. Where exactly did a Genin get the capital to buy a house in central Konoha?"
Naruto shrugged casually, a sly smirk suddenly playing on his lips as he glanced toward his master. "Oh, that? Jiraiya-sensei released that brand-new volume of his Icha Icha series a few months ago while we were traveling through the Hot Springs country. He made me acts as his primary beta-reader and editor."
Temari's left eye twitched violently. Her arms dropped to her sides as she stared at Naruto in utter disbelief. "You… you actually read those disgusting, trashy books? You?"
Naruto instantly raised his hands defensively, his face turning red for the second time that morning. "Hey, hold on! I didn't want to! I value my innocence, okay? But the old pervert completely bribed me! He was hoarding a high-ranking wind-style jutsu scroll that I really needed for my training, and he refused to hand it over unless I helped him finish his writing deadlines."
Jiraiya scoffed loudly, crossing his arms and turning his nose up in the air. "Bribed is an incredibly ungrateful word, brat. It was a mutually beneficial creative partnership."
"Creative partnership my ass," Naruto shot back flatly, turning to face his master directly. "The original draft you wrote was absolute garbage, sensei. It was just page after page of creepy, repetitive descriptions and zero character development. I sat down and personally rewrote half of the damn book. I cut out a lot of the unnecessary nonsense, added an actual narrative structure, built up some genuine romantic tension, and fixed the pacing. And guess what? The publishers said it sold way better than any of your previous volumes."
Jiraiya turned slowly, his jaw dropping as his theatrical pride was completely shattered. "You… you did what to my masterpiece?"
"You're welcome," Naruto said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "And by the way, since the sales numbers skyrocketed because of my edits, you still legally owe me fifty percent of the royalties from the spring print run."
The temperature in the Hokage's office dropped another ten degrees. Tsunade slowly turned her head, her amber eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic light as she glared directly at her former teammate.
"Jiraiya," Tsunade whispered, her voice carrying the promise of a localized natural disaster. "If you do not hand over every single ryo of that kid's fifty-percent cut within the next ten minutes, I am going to personally punch you through that reinforced wall, out of this building, and straight into the training grounds."
Jiraiya's face went pale. He raised both hands in a gesture of immediate, terrified surrender, sweating profusely. "Fine! Fine! Fifty percent! I'll write the bank transfer authorization right now! Just keep your hands off the furniture, Tsunade!"
Temari shook her head, a mixture of amusement and sheer bewilderment washing over her. "So that's why the latest volume actually had a coherent plot. The entire civilian population of Suna was wondering why the writing style suddenly improved."
"Yeah, well, that money was how I was originally planning to buy a nice house," Naruto said, seamlessly steering the conversation back to the logistics of his day. "But since Auntie Tsunade is offering the estate, I guess the property search can wait for a bit. I can invest the cash into better equipment."
Tsunade nodded, her expression returning to its structured, professional calm. "Good. Let's get this handled immediately before the evening dinner. Shizune, leave Tonton here. Go with Naruto to the transit hotel right now. Secure his official clearance, help him gather his belongings, and escort him directly to the Senju estate. Let him choose whichever room he wants in the primary wing."
Shizune smiled warmly, bowing gracefully. "Of course, Lady Hokage. It will be done immediately."
Temari stepped forward, adjusting the giant iron fan strapped to her back. "I'll walk out with you guys. I need to head back to my own room anyway to change out of my combat gear before eight o'clock."
Naruto grinned, his eyes bright with anticipation. "Awesome. Guess that settles the plan for the afternoon."
As the three of them turned and walked out of the office, the heavy wooden doors clicking shut behind them, Tsunade watched their departure through the glass pane. Her expression remained unreadable, the weight of the village's hidden sins resting heavily on her shoulders.
Some promotions in the Hidden Leaf came with grand ceremonies, public speeches, and joyful celebrations. But as Tsunade looked down at the hairline fractures currently marring her mahogany desk, she knew that Naruto's promotion was different. It was the first structural tremor in a long-overdue foundation change, and she was going to ensure that nobody in this village ever robbed the boy of his due again.
