The mountain screamed.
Iron Vein collapsed behind them in stages—outer walls caving, inner corridors imploding as suppression arrays failed one after another. Prisoners poured out like a broken dam, some running, some crawling, some simply staring at the sky as if seeing it for the first time.
Kael Viren did not look back.
He stood at the cliff's edge with the freed teacher supported between Rion and two former inmates, his cloak snapping violently in the rising wind. Behind him, Flamingo hovered calmly, fire folding and unfolding like wings at rest. Harvester stretched thin across the shadows, alert. Dragon Hybrid pressed against Kael's ribs, impatient.
They were not done.
Not even close.
The air split.
Not with flame.
With formation.
From the eastern horizon, lines of light streaked across the sky—dozens, then hundreds—imperial carriers, aerial platforms, flying cultivators moving in perfect synchronization. Banners unfurled midair, emblazoned with the Emperor's sigil.
Rion's face went pale. "That's… a legion."
Kael nodded. "They've decided to stop pretending."
A voice boomed across the valley, amplified by formation arrays.
> "By imperial authority, all fugitives are to surrender immediately. Resistance will be met with eradication."
Flamingo chuckled softly. "They sound nervous."
Harvester corrected it coldly.
> They are not nervous. They are committed.
The ground trembled as heavy units emerged from mountain tunnels—siege cultivators clad in layered armor, their weapons humming with suppression frequencies specifically tuned to gene resonance.
Kael closed his eyes briefly.
This was no longer an escape.
This was a statement.
"Rion," Kael said calmly. "Get them out. Now."
Rion hesitated. "And you?"
Kael opened his eyes.
"I make sure they remember this place."
Rion swallowed, then nodded sharply. Threads lashed outward, forming a moving bridge of light as he guided the prisoners away at full speed.
Kael stepped forward alone.
The first wave descended like rain.
Arrows of condensed qi fell in sheets, warping the air, detonating on impact. Kael did not dodge.
He disrupted.
Mental Disruption rippled outward, bending trajectories, turning precision into chaos. Explosions tore harmlessly into rock instead of flesh.
Flamingo raised both hands.
"Let me test something."
The fire changed.
Not hotter—smarter.
Silver flame spread outward in a thin plane, intersecting the falling attacks. Qi constructs unraveled mid-flight, their internal structures eroded before they could detonate.
Dragon Hybrid surged in approval.
> Allow me.
Kael nodded once.
Dragonfire erupted from Kael's back, not as wings, but as a massive, coiling manifestation—an ethereal dragon spine of molten gold that arched into the sky.
The legion hesitated.
Just for a breath.
That was enough.
Kael moved.
He crossed hundreds of meters in a single bound, Dragonfire propelling him forward. Flamingo followed, splitting into three afterimages of fire that struck from different angles.
Harvester vanished.
Then reappeared inside the legion's formation.
Shadows erupted from beneath armored feet, dragging cultivators down, severing coordination. Communication arrays flickered and died.
"This isn't possible!" someone screamed.
Kael landed among them.
It ended quickly.
Imperial legions were trained for war.
They adapted fast.
Suppressor pylons activated, anchoring reality, pinning Kael's movement, compressing his qi flow. Pain flared as his gene lattice resisted the forced alignment.
Flamingo hissed. "Crude… but effective."
Harvester's voice sharpened.
> They are isolating you. Recommend avatar separation.
Kael made his decision instantly.
"Do it."
The world split.
Harvester tore free fully, its form solidifying into a towering silhouette of shadow and cold intent. Flamingo's body flared brighter, flames condensing into a sharper, more defined figure. Kael remained at the center—human-shaped, but no longer alone.
The legion froze.
Three Kaels.
Three pressures.
Three threats.
"This," Flamingo said lightly, "is why chains fail."
They attacked together.
Harvester dismantled formations from within, targeting commanders and signal nodes. Flamingo incinerated suppressor pylons with erosion flame, breaking the anchoring fields. Kael struck where resistance thickened, Dragonfire smashing through elite units with overwhelming force.
The valley burned.
Blood hit stone.
The imperial banner fell.
Then the air locked.
A single presence descended—slow, deliberate, crushing.
An imperial general.
Older. Heavily scarred. His armor bore the marks of countless campaigns, each etched with authority seals layered so densely they distorted light.
"You have crossed a line, boy," the general said, voice calm, deadly. "This is no longer rebellion. This is treason against reality."
Kael met his gaze without flinching.
"You framed a child," Kael replied. "You experimented on the innocent. You hid behind crowns and laws. This is consequence."
The general raised his weapon—a halberd radiating absolute suppression.
"Then be erased."
They collided.
The impact shattered the valley floor.
Kael was thrown backward, bones screaming as suppression crushed against Dragonfire. Flamingo intervened instantly, flames wrapping Kael, deflecting the worst of the blow.
Harvester struck from behind—only to be repelled by a burst of authority that burned shadow itself.
The general laughed. "Avatars? I've killed gods."
Dragon Hybrid roared inside Kael.
> Enough restraint.
Kael stood, blood dripping from his lip.
"Yes," he said softly. "Enough."
He synchronized.
For one heartbeat, Dragonfire, erosion flame, and shadow aligned—not merged, but harmonized.
Kael stepped forward and punched.
No technique.
No name.
Just will.
The general's halberd shattered.
Authority cracked.
The man flew backward, slamming into the mountain wall, armor fractured, eyes wide with disbelief.
Kael stood over him.
"This," Kael said quietly, "is just the beginning."
The general lost consciousness.
The legion broke.
Smoke drifted through the valley.
The Empire's first full response… defeated.
Rion returned cautiously with the freed prisoners, staring at the devastation. "They'll never forgive this."
Kael nodded. "I'm not asking them to."
Flamingo dispersed into fire motes, satisfied. Harvester melted back into shadow, silent but alert. Dragon Hybrid receded, power still humming beneath Kael's skin.
High above, unseen, a distortion rippled.
A watcher observed.
And somewhere far away, an Arbiter turned its head.
> Escalation confirmed.
Avatar sovereignty approaching threshold.
Kael looked toward the imperial capital, eyes steady.
"Come," he whispered. "I'm ready."
