It struck first, jaws wide enough to swallow a man whole, and Azraeth barely threw himself clear.
Orange Colored Fire — Fire Booster
Flame roared around his feet, hurling him sideways through the mud a half-second before those jaws snapped shut on empty air. The basilisk's tail followed immediately, a scaled whip that shattered the trunk of an ancient tree behind him into splinters, and Azraeth rolled through the wreckage without stopping, already back on his feet before the debris finished falling.
It lunged again, venom weeping from its eyes in searing arcs that hissed where they struck the mud around him. He wove through the spray, footwork carrying him low and sideways exactly the way Vaelric had drilled into him for years, his awareness sharpened by Fire Sight into something closer to instinct than reaction — every twitch of muscle beneath scale visible a half-second before it became a strike.
A stray whip of the basilisk's tail caught his shoulder anyway, and where a lesser guard might have shattered bone, Heat Thickness absorbed the worst of it, the blow landing as a bruise instead of a break. Azraeth didn't slow. He drove forward through the beast's answering thrash, ducked beneath a second sweep of its tail, and gathered every ounce of heat he could hold into both palms.
Orange Colored Fire — Magma Vortex
Molten flame tore open around the beast's coiled lower body, dragging at its enormous weight, pulling it half a rotation off-balance at the exact moment its throat came fully exposed. Azraeth didn't hesitate. He drove forward and struck true, flame pouring into the opening he'd earned rather than been given, and the basilisk's shriek tore through the fog as it thrashed one final, desperate time before its enormous body finally, slowly, went still around him.

Two more years passed before the swamp gave him anything worth calling a true test. At seventeen, a shadow fell across Shadowfen too vast to belong to any tree — an Elder Dragon, ancient and scarred, descending from the sky to claim the swamp as its own.

[Enemy Detected: Elder Dragon]
[Level: 250]
[Class: Dragon]
[Reward: 2,500,000 Exp]
The dragon's first breath of flame turned the fog to boiling steam, and Azraeth barely raised a defense in time.
Yellow Colored Fire — Fire Protection
An invisible shield of searing heat flared around his body, absorbing the worst of the blast, though the force still drove him back through the mud in a smoking furrow. He rolled upright without pause, the dragon already descending on him again, claws raking low.
Yellow Colored Fire — Fire Dash
Ember trails whipped behind him as he closed the distance rather than fled it, ducking beneath one raking claw and driving a flaming strike into the joint of its foreleg. The dragon roared, wings tearing the last of the canopy apart overhead, and answered with a sweeping tail that Azraeth barely cleared, scales scraping close enough to draw blood along his ribs.
He didn't slow to acknowledge the wound.
Yellow Colored Fire — Mud Lava
Molten mud erupted beneath the dragon's hind legs, and though it was too massive to be fully grounded, its next lunge came a fraction slower, a fraction less certain — exactly the opening he needed. Azraeth closed in low, weaving beneath its jaw as flame answered flame, neither side yielding for what felt like hours compressed into minutes. The dragon's claws raked past him again, closer this time, the wound along his ribs deepening — and mid-motion, without breaking stride, he pressed a burning palm to his own side.
Yellow Colored Fire — Lava Heal
The gash sealed shut in an instant, torn muscle knitting closed under scorching heat, and he pressed the advantage without losing a fraction of momentum, driving a burning fist into the exposed seam beneath the dragon's jaw. The beast reared back, shrieking, wings faltering.
Yellow Colored Fire — Magma Vortex
A vortex of molten flame tore open beneath its coiling body, and this time its massive weight couldn't resist the pull entirely — it staggered, throat exposed for one final, decisive instant. Azraeth gathered every remaining ounce of strength into both palms and drove forward, flame pouring into ancient flesh until the ground itself glowed molten beneath them both — until the beast, scarred by centuries of survival, finally, completely, fell still.

Azraeth stood amid the wreckage of the fight, breathing hard, the last of the dragon's smoke curling into a sky finally clearing above him. Seven years since his first Swamp Rat. A world away from the boy who'd once stumbled over a single kill.
By seventeen, level two hundred fifty-nine, a year out from enrolling at Azuremyst Academy, he trained alone now while his father watched from a comfortable distance, no longer needed quite so close.
It was during one such solitary hunt that he saw the light.
It fell from directly overhead, brilliant and white, streaking toward Celestial Isle with a silence that felt wrong given its size. Azraeth went still, breath catching in his throat. He remembered this—not a flicker, not a half-formed feeling, but the same white light he had seen in his previous life on Earth. The final thing Keita had witnessed before death claimed him.
City lights sliding past a car window.
Kaito's laugh cut short.
And that impossible light descending from the heavens in the last moments before everything ended.
He remembered that life clearly. Every memory from Earth remained vivid even after seventeen years in Valvyx. Yet whatever life had existed before Earth was nothing more than an empty void beyond his reach.
The sight of the falling light made his heart pound.
It was the same.
Or at least, it looked terrifyingly similar.
Across Valvyx, in every kingdom and village and forgotten crossroads, people stopped to stare at the same sky. For the first time in living memory, the entire world witnessed one phenomenon together, and no one — not scholars, not Mega Wizards, not the oldest among them — could say what it meant.
Azraeth knew Celestial Isle was forbidden. He crossed the sea anyway, curiosity overpowering every warning his father had ever given him.
The island was silent when he arrived — unnervingly so. He'd expected monsters, legendary and terrible, guarding whatever secret it protected. Instead he found nothing at all, every living thing having fled from something far more overwhelming than Azraeth himself.
At the island's center sat a crater far larger than anything that should have come from an object so small, and within it, a crystal no bigger than his palm — shifting through colors that had no names, beautiful in a way that made his chest ache to look at directly.
He reached toward it.
Before his fingers closed around the stone, it moved on its own, light pouring upward and inward, sinking through his skin and settling somewhere deep behind his ribs, merging with the very core of him.
Then, for the first time in his life, his system responded.
⟢ SYSTEM
Hello, Azraeth.
The words appeared before him exactly as every notification always had — except this time they carried a voice, calm and ancient, reading itself aloud as the text formed in the air.
"Who — what are you?" he asked aloud, uncertain if it could even hear him.

A question for another time. For now — ask, and I will answer.
Azraeth swallowed hard. "Can you show me my status?"

Azraeth stared at the number where a far smaller level cap had stood moments before — six hundred ninety, climbing without warning to a full one thousand — understanding, somewhere deep and wordless, that he now stood on a path toward the Celestial Element, a tier no name in Valvyx's recorded history had ever reached.
The world around him shifted.
Where empty crater and silent shoreline had stood a moment before, a structure tore itself into being — vast, ancient, and impossible. Its entrance rose from the island's surface like the gateway to another world, while its unseen depths descended far beneath Valvyx itself, deeper than any natural cavern could exist. A Labyrinth, materializing from nothing at all.
Azraeth turned, half-expecting someone else to react.
No one did. The island remained as silent and empty as before — and somehow, he understood with absolute certainty that no one else in the world could see it but him.
