The glow around Scrappy didn't stabilize.
It shifted.
Like a reflection in water being disturbed by something far beneath the surface.
Veyl Kharon didn't move, but the space around him tightened again this time more carefully, more deliberately. Not an attack. An analysis. A correction.
"Impossible," he said softly.
The word didn't carry disbelief.
It carried recalculation.
Lin Z instinctively stepped back half a pace, but the pressure in the air followed him anyway, like the street itself had become aware of being observed.
SYSTEM NOTICE: Seeker Authority Engaged
STATUS: SUBJECT UNDER OBSERVATION
OVERRIDE ATTEMPT: IN PROGRESS…
The message glitched.
For the first time, Lin Z saw the System hesitate.
Scrappy let out a low sound no longer a sneeze, no longer playful. The tiny dragon's wings twitched, and the glow around him deepened into something unstable, like embers trapped inside glass.
Veyl Kharon finally lowered his hand.
The pressure vanished instantly.
Not released.
Canceled.
That was worse.
He tilted his head slightly. "Your System is reacting to him."
Lin Z narrowed his eyes. "You can see it?"
"I can see what tries to hide itself," Veyl replied. His gaze stayed locked on Scrappy. "And this… is not a standard beast core."
Scrappy's glow flickered again.
A second heartbeat echoed in the air.
Not audible.
Real.
The stones beneath them trembled.
Lin Z felt it in his bones something inside Scrappy was syncing with something outside the world. Like two broken pieces recognizing each other across impossible distance.
"Stop that," Lin Z said quietly, more to Scrappy than anyone else.
Scrappy tried.
He really did.
But the energy didn't obey him like it used to. It was no longer just his.
Veyl Kharon's voice lowered. "Tell me, anomaly… where did you obtain that dragon?"
Lin Z didn't answer immediately.
Because the truth was simple.
And dangerous.
"I didn't obtain him," Lin Z said. "He appeared."
A pause.
Then
"That is not a natural answer," Veyl said.
The air fractured slightly.
Not broken. Questioned.
And from somewhere far above the city, something answered that question.
A distant sound like a bell made of thunder.
The sky dimmed further.
Clouds didn't gather.
They parted.
As if something above had opened an eye.
SYSTEM ALERT: UNREGISTERED SIGNAL DETECTED
SOURCE: OUTSIDE SECTOR BOUNDARY
IDENTITY MATCH: DRAGON COUNCIL PRIME OBSERVER NODE
Scrappy suddenly stiffened.
His glow snapped once bright, sharp, painful.
And then everything stopped.
Not frozen.
Not paused.
Just… held.
Like reality had taken a breath and forgotten how to exhale.
Veyl Kharon looked upward for the first time.
"…They're watching already."
Lin Z felt it then.
Not fear.
Not danger.
Something worse.
Attention from something that didn't believe in limits.
Scrappy slowly turned his head toward Lin Z.
And in that moment, Lin Z understood
This wasn't a test.
This wasn't an arrest.
This was the beginning of something the System itself hadn't finished defining.
And Scrappy… was already answering it.
