Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: When the Past Strikes Back.

The peace did not last.

Zyra sensed it before the ground trembled—before the seal warmed against her chest. The air shifted, sharp and restless, like the moment before lightning split the sky.

Ethan felt it too. His grip tightened around her hand. "Something's wrong."

The guardian's glow dimmed slightly as it turned toward the far edge of the estate. "Alverin's control has ended," it said calmly, "but the damage he caused still lingers."

A sudden roar shattered the silence.

From beyond the iron gates, a wave of dark energy surged forward—not shadows shaped like creatures this time, but raw force, twisting the ground beneath it. Stones cracked. Statues collapsed.

"The remnants," Zyra whispered. "He left them behind."

"Yes," the guardian said. "Unbound fragments. They no longer think. They only destroy."

The monkey screeched sharply and leapt ahead, bouncing from rubble to wall, signaling danger. Its movements were faster than ever, urgency flashing in its eyes.

Ethan stepped forward. "Then we stop them. Now."

They ran.

The estate, once familiar, now felt like a battlefield. Walls split as dark energy slammed into them. A tower in the distance collapsed with a thunderous crash.

Zyra stumbled as the ground shook violently, but Ethan steadied her. "I've got you."

"I know," she replied, breathless but determined.

The guardian raised its hand, forming a barrier of light that absorbed the next blast of energy. The force rippled through it, strong enough to push the guardian back a step.

"These remnants are unstable," it said. "If they reach the inner grounds, the seal could fracture permanently."

Zyra's heart pounded. "Then we can't let that happen."

The monkey darted back toward them, chattering urgently, then pointed—yes, actually pointed—with its tail toward the old ceremonial hall.

"They're converging there," Ethan realized. "That's where the foundation stone is."

Zyra nodded. "The heart of the estate."

They sprinted toward it.

As they approached, the remnants began to take shape—twisting into towering forms of chaos, cracking the ground with every step. They were stronger than the shadows before, fueled not by fear but by destruction.

Ethan planted his feet. "Guardian?"

"I will hold them back," the guardian said. "But you must reinforce the seal."

Zyra swallowed. "How?"

The guardian's gaze softened. "Together. As you have been."

The remnants lunged.

The monkey sprang into action, swinging from broken beams, knocking loose stones into the remnants' cores. Each impact destabilized them, buying precious seconds.

Ethan raised his arm, shielding Zyra as one remnant slammed into the ground before them, sending debris flying. He winced as a stone grazed his shoulder.

"Ethan!" Zyra cried.

"I'm fine," he said quickly. "Focus."

She placed her hand over the seal, feeling its warmth respond instantly. Ethan placed his hand over hers, steady and firm.

The ground beneath them glowed faintly.

The remnants hesitated.

"They recognize the bond," the guardian said. "They cannot overcome unity."

Zyra closed her eyes, focusing not on fear—but on everything they had survived. The forced marriage. The secrets. The battles. The choice they made again and again to stand together.

Light spread outward in slow, powerful waves.

One remnant screeched as its form cracked, fragments dissolving into harmless dust. Another staggered as the monkey leapt onto its back, tugging at unstable energy lines like loose threads.

"Nice teamwork," Ethan muttered with a grin.

Despite the danger, Zyra laughed softly. "We're getting good at this."

The largest remnant roared and charged, its form towering over the ceremonial hall. Cracks spiderwebbed across the stone floor.

"No," Zyra whispered. "It won't touch this place."

She stepped forward—this time without hesitation.

The seal responded instantly, blazing brighter than ever. The guardian joined its power, golden light intertwining with silver.

Ethan stood at her side, unshaken. "You're not alone."

With a final surge, the light expanded, enveloping the remnant completely. It shattered—not violently, but gently, like mist dissolving under sunlight.

Silence followed.

The ground stopped shaking. The air settled.

Zyra exhaled shakily. "Is it… over?"

The guardian scanned the grounds, then nodded. "Yes. The remnants are gone."

The monkey hopped down, panting slightly, then raised its arms triumphantly.

Ethan laughed, tension finally breaking. "I think it deserves a medal."

Zyra knelt and hugged the monkey without thinking. It froze in surprise, then patted her shoulder awkwardly before chirping happily.

The guardian watched them, a hint of warmth in its expression. "This was the final backlash of the past. From now on, the future is yours to shape."

Zyra stood, looking around the damaged but standing estate. "There's so much to rebuild."

"Yes," the guardian said. "But rebuilding is easier when fear no longer rules."

Ethan looked at Zyra, his voice quiet but certain. "We'll do it together."

She met his gaze, her heart steady. "Together."

Above them, the sky cleared, sunlight breaking through clouds that had lingered for generations.

For the first time, the Alverin legacy no longer felt like a curse.

It felt like a lesson finally learned.
