Samara could not focus on her work.
She scrubbed the same spot on the same marble floor for ten minutes, her mind elsewhere. The other maids moved around her, chatting quietly, but she heard none of it. All she could see was Elyra standing beside Caelion. All she could hear was his voice saying "You will stay."
What is he playing at?
She scrubbed harder.
"You are going to wear a hole through the floor."
Kelly's voice cut through her thoughts. Samara looked up. The senior maid stood over her, arms crossed, eyebrows raised.
"Sorry," Samara muttered. "I was distracted."
"Clearly." Kelly glanced toward the closed doors of Caelion's chambers. "Do not let it bother you. The unnamed prince has never shown interest in any maid before. Your friend is lucky."
"She is not my friend."
Kelly shrugged. "Roommate, then. Either way, do not let jealousy ruin your position. There are plenty of other places to work in this palace."
"I am not jealous."
