Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: A God’s Perspective

The Transparent World, put simply, was a special state that could only be awakened after one's martial arts reached the highest realm.

It wasn't merely "better eyesight," but an ultimate level of insight into a living body's functions.

To someone who had opened the Transparent World, every living creature would appear half-transparent.

And because they could see changes in muscle and blood flow, they could predict an opponent's attack trajectory before the opponent even truly moved.

Inside the Butterfly Mansion, after hearing Tanjiro's explanation of the "Transparent World," Shinobu had a moment where she genuinely wondered if something was wrong with her ears.

"Wait a second, Tanjiro… if what you're saying is true, does that mean you can see every weakness a demon has—perfectly clearly?"

Yoriichi nodded. "Miss Shinobu is physically small, and you can't cut off a demon's head. So even your poison is easily broken down by them."

"But if you master the Transparent World, then even if you can't sever bone, you can drive your thin blade into the gaps between muscles—or into the body's vulnerable points."

"For you, it's the most suitable ability there is."

Silently staring at the boy's utterly sincere gaze, Shinobu's delicate brows drew together without her noticing. Even as she tried to maintain her gentle, big-sister smile—the pleasant mask she wore so well—her heart was already being churned into a storm.

"My, my…"

She raised her right hand and lightly rested it against her cheek. Her violet eyes narrowed, her tone bright and teasing in a way that made her hard to read.

"Tanjiro, you're saying something truly outrageous. If someone didn't know you, they might think you're some street con artist, trying to sell a secret manual for immortality."

Her smile was flawless—like a beautifully crafted mask.

But beneath that mask, emotion was already surging like an ocean in flood.

"Is there really something that miraculous…?"

Soon, she lowered her lashes, her voice dropping into something barely audible—half a whisper to herself, half an interrogation of her own sanity.

As a rigorous scholar of pharmacology, she was instinctively repelled by a theory that sounded so fantastical.

A living body's structure was complex—muscle, bone, blood vessels layered upon layered. How could it ever become "transparent" through mere sight?

If this were any other day, she would have smiled and dismantled such claims until nothing remained.

And yet—somehow—she found it difficult to believe this boy would lie to her with something so pointless.

And as a swordswoman who burned for revenge against demons, there was also a voice deep inside her that screamed for it to be true.

"Miss Shinobu, do you have time right now?" Yoriichi asked suddenly.

Shinobu looked up again. The false amusement in her eyes faded a little. "Why—what is it?"

Yoriichi rose to his feet. "I'll show you through action. It'll be faster than explaining."

The afternoon wind drifted through the wisteria trellis, scattering petals like a snowfall of violet.

"So… what exactly do I do?"

Shinobu drew her uniquely shaped Nichirin blade—the tip hooked and specialized for injecting poison.

She stood there, uncertain. "Do I meditate? Or do I stand under a waterfall like Master Himejima, to temper my will?"

"It doesn't need to be that complicated." Yoriichi stepped behind her, his voice calm. "Raise your sword. Hold the stance for a thrust."

Shinobu did as instructed, settling into the opening form of Insect Breathing.

Then she felt it—one warm hand gently covering the back of her right hand where she gripped the hilt, and the other placed lightly against her back along the spine.

"Mm…"

The unexpected contact made her body tremble faintly. No matter how composed and sharp she usually was, heat rose to the tips of her ears.

She could clearly sense the clean warmth behind her.

It felt like bedding that had been left out in the sun—warm, pure—and somehow it loosened a knot of tension she hadn't realized she was holding.

"Um, Tanjiro… is this step necessary?" Shinobu asked quickly, a touch stiff.

"Yes. I need to guide your breathing frequency so your senses can synchronize with mine."

"Try to feel my breathing—and match it as closely as you can."

Shinobu quietly drew in a breath, forcing down the clutter in her mind and steadying her heart.

As a Hashira who had long mastered Total Concentration: Constant, adjusting her breathing should have been as easy as blinking.

At first, she carried that confidence, trying to catch the rhythm of the boy behind her.

But when her awareness truly sank in—when she attempted to replicate his frequency—her expression shifted in ways she couldn't hide.

What… was that?

His breathing sounded steady and long, without the slightest noise.

And yet, when she tried to follow it, she realized it wasn't a simple pattern of "inhale" and "exhale."

It was an absurdly complex cycle—so precise it made her scalp prickle.

If ordinary breathing was a gentle stream, then this boy's breathing was a deep abyss—calm on the surface, with violent currents roiling beneath.

Every intake and release felt like it had been calculated to the finest degree: oxygen forced into the blood in an instant, then delivered with terrifying efficiency to every nerve in his body.

What… what kind of breathing is this?

…She couldn't keep up.

He stood there quietly, his breath barely audible—yet when she tried to force synchronization, her lungs burned as if lit on fire. Her heart thundered wildly, as if it might overload and burst in the next second.

"Don't analyze the structure. Don't think about the principles."

Just as Shinobu was about to suffocate in her own disorder, Yoriichi's voice reached her ear—calm enough to smooth any turbulence.

The hand pressed to her back increased its pressure just slightly, like an anchor dropped into storm waves, holding her steady.

"Empty your mind. Imagine you're just a leaf, moving with the wind."

Shinobu squeezed her eyes shut and compelled herself to abandon the rational analysis of a medical scholar.

She stopped chasing blood-flow paths and stopped asking why his oxygen exchange was so monstrously efficient.

Under his guidance, she chose to stop thinking—fully—and blindly pursued that rhythm.

Once. Twice. Three times…

At last—after countless attempts and adjustments, right on the edge of suffocation—

Click.

It was as if gears finally, barely, meshed.

A strange warm current surged up her spine into her brain, like a river choked for years being cleared in an instant.

Her breath—tight and hurried from tension—miraculously overlapped with the boy's behind her.

In—out—

Thump. Thump. Thump.

The noisy wind, the insects' chirping—everything seemed to drift far away. The world became unnaturally quiet.

"Now," the boy said gently at her ear, "open your eyes."

Shinobu's eyes snapped open.

"—?!"

In that instant, her pupils dilated. She went rigid, staring ahead in disbelief.

The training yard that had looked ordinary only moments ago now seemed transformed beyond recognition.

A tree in the distance was no longer just bark and leaves. She could see the pathways of moisture flowing inside the trunk, and the stretching of fibers as the leaves quivered in the breeze.

Even more terrifying—

A sparrow happened to fly past.

In her vision, it became half-transparent.

Every flap of its wings, every contraction of the tiniest muscles, the frantic rhythm of its heart, the way blood was pumped through its body—

Everything, absolutely everything, appeared on her retina in a manner that was impossibly slow and impossibly clear.

"Th-this… this is…"

Her voice shook—she couldn't tell if it was awe or something closer to trembling exhilaration. Her Nichirin blade in her hand felt as if it might slip from her grip.

This wasn't a swordsmanship "realm" at all…

It was more like—

A god's perspective.
