A few days before Orochimaru's birthday, early in the morning, Luffy was sneaking around in the boys' dormitory (Orochimaru lived in the lab), rummaging through a pile of junk.
Usopp yawned as he got up, rubbed his eyes, and looked at Luffy with some surprise.
"Luffy... early in the morning... what are you doing?"
Luffy shushed him mysteriously.
"I'm looking for materials. Orochimaru's birthday is in a few days."
Usopp tilted his head, looking bewildered, "It's just a birthday, why are you so nervous?"
Luffy rubbed his temples in distress. "I need to prepare a birthday present for Orochimaru."
Usopp chuckled, "Orochimaru probably wouldn't mind such things. Why be so sneaky? Orochimaru isn't that petty. Just throw a party, everyone celebrates that way, right?"
"No, no, no, no, no..." Luffy shook his head frantically.
"You don't know how much he cares about these things! Let me tell you, when he was 8 years old, because his grandpa didn't come back for his birthday, he cried and made a huge fuss."
(Orochimaru stated, "I didn't cry.")
Luffy imitated Orochimaru, kneeling on the ground, his expression instantly transforming into Orochimaru's. He waved his hands constantly, flailing and complaining.
"Why!!! Why didn't Grandpa come back to celebrate my birthday!!! Did he forget!"
Then he turned and pointed at Usopp.
"Luffy! Did you forget what day yesterday was! Did you!
Dadan didn't remember either! Sabo and Ace didn't wish me a happy birthday... Sister Makino didn't come to see me, boo hoo hoo.
Why don't any of you remember!!!
Why!!! Yesterday was my birthday!!! My! Birth! Day! Wahhh wahhh wahhh wahhh."
Usopp looked at Luffy, dumbfounded... The other people in the boys' dormitory had woken up at some point, and their mouths twitched slightly as they watched Luffy throwing a tantrum like Orochimaru.
Usopp said, disbelievingly, "No way... that's not Orochimaru, is it...?"
"It's exactly like that," Luffy returned to his normal self, looking troubled.
"It scared Dadan so much that she quickly had the village chief contact Grandpa.
Grandpa even thought something had happened to Orochimaru, so he sailed back overnight. We all thought Orochimaru had broken... but it really was just because no one celebrated his birthday that he was making a fuss.
So, Orochimaru's birthday is coming up soon, and I'm really troubled about birthday presents."
Everyone else, except Sanji, started to get headaches. What should they give him? Seeing Luffy just imitating him, if he really threw a tantrum, they'd have to coax him for a while.
Usopp thought for a moment, then patted his chest, volunteering.
"Leave this to me. You just need to prepare gifts. You can buy them on the next island. On his birthday, you just need to follow my plan!"
So Usopp went to tell Nami and Robin about it, receiving Nami's similar disbelief and Robin's mysterious smile.
Soon it was October 27th, Orochimaru's birthday. Although Orochimaru cared very much whether someone celebrated his birthday or not...
...he often forgot dates... This led to him usually realizing his birthday had passed, which is why he would throw a tantrum... because no one else remembered either!
And so... Luffy and the others were forced to remember a date... By instinct... after finishing his experiment, Orochimaru took a shower, changed into clean clothes, and pushed open the door with a light step. He was very happy; he felt that in a little while, he would be able to have Sage Mode in the Pirate World. It would be super cool.
As Orochimaru appeared on the deck, with a 'bang,' he was covered in colorful streamers, looking bewildered at the group of people surrounding him.
"Orochimaru!! Happy Birthday!"
Sanji appeared, pushing a huge birthday cake.
"This is my birthday present for you."
Everyone else also presented their gift boxes.
Orochimaru, somewhat overwhelmed, sat on the deck, holding the boxes.
"Can I open them now?"
"Mhm mhm."
Everyone nodded and answered in unison. A News Coo also timely delivered a few gift boxes.
These were seagull express deliveries arranged by Morgans of the newspaper agency.
Orochimaru sat amidst the pile of gifts and began to unwrap them.
Luffy's gift was a model ornament of a large bone-in meat.
Zoro's gift was a small knife-shaped charm.
Usopp meticulously crafted a human-shaped action figure in Orochimaru's likeness.
Nami's gift was... um... golden tangerines.
Sanji, besides the large birthday cake, also had a limited-edition flavored cheesecake.
Chopper gave a set of surgical knives.
Robin gave a set of "Detailed Illustrations of Various Races in the Grand Line."
Franky... a mini Super Franky robot.
Brook gave Orochimaru a very artistic guitar.
Then came the express delivery package.
Garp sent limited-edition senbei and donuts, which also included a merry's sheep-head bracelet... Ace sent a hat... Sabo, as if guessing what Ace would send, sent hat accessories.
There was also a Moriah-version Shadow Doll from Moriah; truly worthy of a Shadow Clone... Orochimaru, somewhat moved, held the gifts. Following Usopp's shout, "Brothers! Prepare! Pose!"
The group struck a set of smooth poses (pictures at the end of the article), with a "Happy Birthday" banner above their heads... Orochimaru cried out in emotion, "thank you... everyone Sang!"
The party began, and so Orochimaru had a pleasant birthday.
