Chapter 30 - Echoes Of What Use To Be

Morning came gently.

No hangover from the party.

No rush of regret.

Just the soft awareness that something had shifted—even if no one could name it yet.

Tiana woke to the sound of her phone vibrating beside her pillow.

"Mummy" flashed on the screen.

She smiled before answering.

"Good morning, ma."

Her mother's voice filled the room with warmth. "My daughter. How is school? Hope you are settling in well?"

"Yes, ma," Tiana replied. "Everything is fine. Lectures have started. I'm adjusting."

Her father joined the call briefly, asking about her courses, her hostel, whether she was eating well. They reminded her to pray, to focus, to remember why she came.

"We are proud of you," her mother said before hanging up.

Tiana sat quietly for a moment after the call ended.

She felt… grounded.

Not because everything was perfect—but because she wasn't alone anymore.

Across campus, Joshua sat on his bed staring at his phone.

He dialed home.

"Hello, mummy," he said, forcing lightness into his voice. "I wanted to ask if you could help me with small money. Things are tight."

There was a pause.

"Joshua, not now," his mother replied gently. "We don't have it at the moment. Manage first."

The line went dead.

He dropped the phone beside him and lay back, eyes fixed on the ceiling.

Memories surfaced uninvited.

Tiana, back in the barracks.

Tiana at home.

Tiana answering his calls without hesitation.

I need money.

No problem.

I'll send it now.

He swallowed.

He hadn't even needed to explain then.

Now, there was no one to call.

Meanwhile, Dare found Tiana at the library later that day.

Not planned.

Not dramatic.

Just coincidence.

They exchanged a smile and sat a little apart, each with their books open. Every now and then, their eyes met, and one of them would smile again.

Nothing more.

Nothing forced.

That was enough.

Stephen, on the other hand, spent most of the day with his phone lighting up.

Nadia.

Good morning 😊

Did you sleep well?

Have you eaten?

He replied when he could. Polite. Curious. Careful.

She was clearly the one chasing now—asking questions, keeping conversations alive, wanting to be seen beyond rumors and labels.

Stephen noticed.

But he didn't rush.

He hadn't forgotten what he overheard the night before—but he hadn't let it change his tone either. Some truths needed time before they were addressed.

Across campus paths, life continued.

Tiana learning to breathe again.

Dare learning to wait.

Nadia trying to be known.

Stephen observing quietly.

Joshua remembering too late.

Not everything that breaks shatters loudly.

Some things fade—slowly, quietly—until all that's left is the echo of what used to be.

And everyone, whether ready or not, was beginning to hear it.
