Chapter 297 - Chapter 297: The Cage of Hatred

Chapter 297: The Cage of Hatred

The Seal Space

Uzumaki Mito walked through the darkness with the steady, unhurried steps of a woman who had made this journey ten thousand times before. The oppressive weight of the Nine-Tails' malice pressed against her from all sides, but she did not flinch. She had spent decades in this place—decades of struggle, of suppression, of quiet, endless war against the beast that raged within her. The fox's hatred had long since ceased to frighten her. She had become immune to its fury, the way a blacksmith becomes immune to the heat of the forge.

"Uzumaki Mito! You wretched woman!"

The Nine-Tails lunged against the iron bars the moment it saw her. Its massive paws slammed against the cage, rattling the ancient seals. Its fox head thrust forward, teeth bared, fangs gleaming with drool and fury. The violent chakra surged outward, churning the water that filled the seal space, whipping it into a frenzy of waves and foam. A lesser soul would have been paralyzed by terror.

Mito glanced at the beast with the mild exasperation of a grandmother regarding a misbehaving dog.

"Mōryō Gate."

A single, trembling hand rose. From the void above, massive wooden gates materialized—ancient, carved with sacred symbols, impossibly heavy. They plummeted from the darkness and slammed into the Nine-Tails with the force of divine judgment. One gate pinned its claws. Another crushed its tails against the stone floor. A third pressed its massive head to the ground, locking its jaws shut.

The Myōjin Gate. One of the First Hokage's legendary sealing techniques. A jutsu that had once been used to briefly suppress even the Ten-Tails itself.

Uzumaki Mito had learned it from her husband. She was not as powerful as Hashirama—no one was. His version, cast in Sage Mode, could shackle gods. But hers was more than sufficient for a single Tailed Beast.

The Nine-Tails, which had been raging and snapping moments before, now lay flattened against the ground. Its nine tails twitched uselessly. Its claws scrabbled against the stone. It looked, for all its legendary ferocity, distinctly embarrassed.

"Much better," Kushina said, sticking out her tongue. "You look more pleasing to the eye when you're lying down."

Her terror had passed. Seeing her grandmother so effortlessly suppress the monster that had terrified her moments ago had shifted something in her heart. This was the beast that would be sealed inside her? This was the great Nine-Tails? It was just a bully—all bluster and teeth against a dying old woman, and the moment that old woman pushed back, it folded like wet paper.

"Little brat! What did you say?! I'll devour you! I'll swallow you whole!" The Nine-Tails thrashed against the gates, its roar sending scalding waves of chakra-laced breath across the seal space.

"What are you so arrogant for, you stinky fox? You're the one pinned to the floor by a seal. Show some manners!"

"Damn you!"

"I'll eat you alive!"

"RAAAARGH!"

The fox raged. It howled. It slammed its tails against the gates and gnashed its teeth and promised bloody, creative forms of death. But pinned beneath the Myōjin Gate, its threats were empty. The more it struggled, the more ridiculous it looked.

"Is your vocabulary really that limited?" Kushina crossed her arms, her fear now entirely replaced by the reckless bravado of a girl who had decided she was not going to be intimidated. "Can you only say the same three things over and over? 'I'll eat you.' 'I'll kill you.' 'Raaargh.' Is that really all you've got? How pathetic."

The Nine-Tails' eyes went bloodshot. Its pupils contracted to murderous slits. If looks could kill, Kushina would have been vaporized.

"Kushina." Mito's voice was gentle but firm. "Do not underestimate the Nine-Tails. The Tailed Beasts are dangerous. They wait. They watch. They will always find the right moment to strike at their Jinchūriki's heart. Never let your guard down."

Kushina's smug expression sobered. "Yes, Grandmother. I understand."

Mito turned her attention back to the pinned fox. Her expression was calm. Almost sad.

"Nine-Tails. We have been together for many years. I cannot say it has been pleasant—for either of us. But I am dying now. You want freedom. I cannot give it to you. The Tailed Beasts are too great a threat to the human world, and so I must pass you on. I have found you a new Jinchūriki. You will remain here. With her."

The words were simple. Direct. A final statement, delivered without malice or apology.

The Nine-Tails' rage subsided into something colder. More mocking. It regarded Mito with narrowed, gleaming eyes.

"Humans. Such fragile, pathetic creatures. Born. Aging. Sick. Dying. Look at you now. A wrinkled husk, barely able to stand. Heh."

"Humans are not Tailed Beasts. We cannot live forever. All things follow natural laws. You are the exception—the anomaly." Mito's voice was weary but steady. "I cannot resolve your hatred, Nine-Tails. I do not know if anyone can. But I will not allow you to return to the human world. I can only bind you. Imprison you. For as long as our bloodline endures."

"Then hurry up and die." The fox's voice dripped with contempt. "To me, this is nothing but a change of sleeping quarters. A nap in a different room. You're the one who suffered. You're the one who wasted your life as my jailer. Now leave. I'm tired of looking at you."

Mito gazed at the beast for a long moment. Her eyes held something complex—not quite pity, not quite regret, but something adjacent to both. The Jinchūriki system was not a solution. It was a stopgap. A bandage over a wound that would never heal. She had spent her entire life as a cage, and she had never found a better way.

She took Kushina's small hand in hers.

"Come. Let's go."

The two of them—old woman and young girl, present and future—turned their backs on the pinned fox and walked into the darkness.

Behind them, the Nine-Tails stared at their retreating figures. Its voice, when it spoke, was low and dripping with venom.

"Ridiculous humans. Someday... someday I will break this seal. I will be free. And I will show you all what true hatred looks like."

Its eyes flickered. A memory surfaced—unbidden, unwanted. An old man with gentle eyes and a voice like thunder.

"Nine-Tails. One day, you will meet someone who understands your heart. Someone who will resolve your hatred. When that time comes, you will find a bond that gives your life meaning. You will find hope."

The Sage of Six Paths. The old man who had created them and then abandoned them. What did he know? What did he understand?

There is no such human, the fox thought. People like Mito only want my power. They never ask where my hatred comes from. They never care. Humans are clever creatures. They'll destroy themselves sooner or later. I'll just wait.

It closed its eyes. The Myōjin Gate slowly faded. The seal space grew quiet.

The beast slept.

The Hokage's Office — Late Night

The Nine-Tails' chakra had leaked. The beast had rioted. The signs were unmistakable. Every high-ranking official in Konoha who mattered knew what it meant. An emergency council had been convened in the dead of night, and the decision had been made.

The sealing ceremony would take place in three days.

The Nine-Tails would be transferred from Uzumaki Mito's body to Uzumaki Kushina's.

After the meeting, only two men remained in the office. Sarutobi Hiruzen stood at the window, staring out at the sleeping village. Danzō Shimura lurked in the shadows near the door.

"Mito-sama is leaving us," Danzō said, his voice carefully neutral. "Will the new Jinchūriki be capable of suppressing the Nine-Tails? If not... perhaps Root should take custody. We have methods. We could ensure stability."

"Get out."

Hiruzen did not turn around. His voice was ice.

"This matter is not open for discussion. Root is forbidden from approaching Kushina. Your operatives will maintain their distance. The sealing ceremony will be handled entirely by my ANBU. The security must be absolute. The transfer must be flawless."

"...Understood."

Danzō's eyes flickered—a brief, unreadable expression. Then he turned and melted into the shadows of the corridor.

Hiruzen stood alone, his pipe cold and forgotten in his hand. In three days, a young girl would become a living weapon. A cage for the most powerful of the Tailed Beasts. And the woman who had been his mentor's wife, the last living link to the era of the First Hokage, would pass from this world.

The old gave way to the young. The cycle continued.

He did not sleep that night.

Ragnar's Cabin — The Same Night

Far from the Senju compound, in a quiet wooden house on the outskirts of the village, Ragnar sat cross-legged on his bed. His eyes were closed. His breathing was slow and measured.

A faint layer of scarlet chakra shimmered across the surface of his skin.

It was hot. Violent. Pulsing with the same ancient, malevolent energy that had shaken the Senju estate hours before. The chakra of the Tailed Beasts all shared a common origin—the Divine Tree. The Ten-Tails. The source from which all nine had been carved. Different beasts. Different powers. But the essence was the same. Primordial. Volcanic. Alive with a fury that predated human civilization.

Ragnar's hands moved through a sequence of seals. His eyes snapped open.

POOF.

A cloud of white smoke filled the room. When it cleared, the miniature form of the Five-Tails sat on the bed before him. Kokuō shook her head, her dolphin-like ears flapping, her five tails swaying with agitation.

"That idiot Nine-Tails," she said, her voice carrying a mixture of exasperation and long-suffering familiarity. "Still the same as always. Too violent. Too angry. He's going to get himself into trouble one of these days. The old lady is almost gone, and all he can do is scream and threaten. Some things never change."

Ragnar regarded her with calm, dark eyes.

"You sensed it too."

"Of course I sensed it. We're siblings, in a manner of speaking. When one of us flares up like that, the others feel it." Kokuō's tails curled around her compact body. "The old woman's seal is weakening. She won't last much longer. When she goes... the transfer will be dangerous. For everyone. Especially that red-haired girl."

Ragnar said nothing. But the scarlet chakra around his body flickered—once, sharply—before settling back into its steady, controlled rhythm.

Kokuō watched him with unreadable eyes.

"You're worried about her."

Ragnar did not answer. He did not need to.
