Daylight barely filtered into the cave, but it was enough.
The air felt heavy, damp, and cold, settling into every corner. The rough stone walls seemed to close in, making the space feel smaller than it actually was.
Zero adjusted the strap of his bag, shifting its weight over his shoulder. His eyes scanned the cave, landing on Aira.
Zero: "Stay here."
Aira frowned, uncertain.
"Alone?" she asked, her voice soft.
Zero nodded once.
Zero: "If anything happens… use it."
He placed the wrapped gun beside her. Not opened. Not even unwrapped. Just there, silent and heavy.
Zero: "Only if you have to."
Aira swallowed hard, then gave a small nod.
"I'll be fine," she said, though doubt lingered in her eyes.
Zero didn't wait for another word. He turned toward the cave entrance.
Zero: "I'm going to get food. Maybe hunt. Maybe the stores."
He paused, narrowing his eyes at the valley below.
Zero: "Animals won't last long in this world. Zombies don't need food. That means supplies will rot… or disappear."
He stepped out of the cave carefully, his boots barely making a sound on the rocky ground.
Zero: "Keep the fire small. And listen."
And then he was gone, swallowed by the forest.
The path through the trees was quiet. Too quiet.
Zero moved slowly, every sense alert. Branches snapped lightly underfoot, but he made it seem natural — part of the forest. Near the lower slope, two figures wandered among the trees. Slow. Broken. Hollow-eyed. Not human anymore.
Zero froze for a moment, observing. Then, with careful precision, he passed them without hesitation. Moments later, the forest returned to its unsettling silence.
One of the bodies lay on the ground, still.
Zero crouched, breathing steady. That's when he saw it: a faint glimmer at the edge of the head.
He brushed away dirt and paused, frozen.
A small, marble-like object sat there. Smooth, dark, with a dull green glow that reflected the faint sunlight.
Zero: "…What are you?"
He picked it up carefully. Warm to the touch. Not alive. Not dead.
He wrapped it in cloth and stood up.
Zero: "So this is new."
By afternoon, Zero reached the edge of a small store. Its windows were shattered, shelves broken, cans scattered across the floor — yet not completely empty.
Zero worked quickly, methodical, efficient.
Food. Water. Batteries. Any supplies that might last.
He didn't linger. The air seemed heavier here, almost watchful. Every sound echoed in the empty streets.
Clouds rolled over the mountains on his way back, shadowing the valley. The wind carried a metallic tang. The cave finally came into view. Relief washed over him — a sensation he hadn't felt in days.
Aira rushed forward as he entered.
"You're back!"
Zero dropped the bag, contents spilling slightly — enough to see they had enough for now.
Zero: "Told you."
Together, they checked the supplies. Enough to survive for a while.
Zero reached for the cloth bundle again.
Aira leaned closer, curiosity mixed with fear.
"What's that?" she asked.
Zero opened it slightly. The marble caught the flicker of the small fire, faintly glowing.
Her breath hitched.
"That… that was inside a zombie?"
Zero nodded.
Zero: "Inside the head."
Silence followed. Aira hugged herself tightly.
"…That's not normal," she whispered.
Zero stared at the object, dark eyes unblinking.
Zero: "Neither is this world."
He closed the cloth carefully.
Zero: "Whatever Pandora brought back…"
A pause.
Zero: "It didn't come alone."
Outside, the wind shifted, carrying a distant echo — deeper than a groan, sharper than silence.
Zero stood, scanning the valley below.
Zero: "We don't stay long."
Aira looked at him.
"Where do we go?"
Zero glanced at the marble, then toward the mountains beyond.
Zero: "Where answers hide."
The fire flickered, throwing shadows across the cave walls.
And somewhere beyond the clouds, the legacy of Pandora continued to awaken.
