Chapter 10 - chapter 10: confession in Silence (II)

The next morning began earlier than Ping would have liked.

Teachers gathered everyone in front of the buses, their voices firm and unmistakably serious despite the cheerful atmosphere.

The rules were repeated again and again-no wandering off alone, no disappearing into the crowd, always stay in pairs.

Ping nodded obediently along with the others, hands clasped in front of him. He understood the importance of rules. He always did. Still, his eyes wandered. Ahead of them, the amusement park spread out like a living dream. Bright colors clashed beautifully under the sun. Rides towered above the crowd, lights blinking even in daylight, music spilling from every direction. The ferris wheel turned slowly against the sky, graceful and unhurried. The carousel spun endlessly, cheerful tunes echoing as painted horses rose and fell.

From somewhere nearby came bursts of laughter-students screaming as bumper cars collided, others cheering from spinning rides that twisted and flipped their stomachs upside down.

Ping's chest tightened-not from anxiety, but from excitement. He had never been to a place like this before.

"Ready?" Keng asked beside him.

Ping glanced up and nodded, a shy smile tugging at his lips.

They stayed close as they entered, naturally falling into step with each other.

At first, Ping stuck to gentler rides, gripping the safety bars with stiff fingers, eyes wide. But after the first few rides, something inside him loosened. He laughed. Not softly. Not quietly. He laughed freely. The sound surprised him as much as it did Keng.

Each time Ping smiled, Keng found himself watching-not the rides, not the noise, just Ping. The way his eyes lit up, the way his shoulders relaxed, the way his laughter sounded unguarded.

Keng matched his pace, stayed close without crowding him, silently memorizing every reaction. It felt... right.

Then Ping stopped.

Keng noticed immediately.

Ping stood in front of a claw machine, completely still. His eyes shone as he stared at the dolls inside-soft colors, round shapes, stitched smiles.

Near the edge sat a small teddy bear, its button eyes tilted upward as if pleading to be chosen.

"You like it?" Keng asked gently.

"Yes," Ping answered without hesitation, the honesty slipping out before he could stop himself.

Keng smiled. "I'll get it for you."

Ping turned so fast his glasses nearly slipped.

"Really?"

"Of course," Keng said, reaching out and rubbing Ping's hair gently.

"Anything for little Ping."

Ping's heart skipped-hard.

Keng stepped forward and slipped a coin into the machine, but Ping quickly grabbed his sleeve.

"Can I... try?" Ping asked shyly.

"I'm not very good at it..."

"That's okay," Keng replied softly.

"I'll teach you."

He stepped behind Ping, bending slightly to match his height. Slowly, carefully, he placed his hands over Ping's, guiding his fingers to the controls.

Warm.

That was the first thing Ping noticed.

Keng's hands were warm-steady, confident.

Ping forgot how to breathe.

He was supposed to concentrate. He wanted to learn. But with Keng so close, his presence wrapping around him, Ping's thoughts scattered. He stole small glances from the corner of his eye, cheeks heating up uncontrollably.

Keng noticed. He always did.

"Ping," Keng said teasingly, his voice low and amused.

"Concentrate."

Ping froze.

Keng chuckled softly.

"I know I'm handsome, but focus. You can either study my face or learn how to play the claw machine."

Ping flushed immediately, gripping the controls tighter, his ears burning.

The claw dropped. It hovered. Then it closed-and lifted the teddy.

Ping gasped when it fell into the prize slot.

Keng handed it to him, watching as Ping's face lit up with pure, unfiltered joy.

His fingers clutched the plush tightly, as if afraid it might disappear.

Without a word, Keng slipped another coin into the machine.

"P'Keng?" Ping started.

Keng only smiled.

This time, another doll fell. Keng picked it up and held it briefly before speaking.

"I'll keep this one," he said.

"Now we have a pair."

Ping couldn't reply.

His cheeks burned, his heart racing in a way he couldn't explain. He hugged the teddy close, lowering his head to hide his blush.

As the sun dipped lower and the lights grew brighter, the day slowly came to an end.

Students gathered near the buses, exhausted but happy, voices softer now.

Ping stood beside Keng, the teddy tucked under his arm, his heart fuller than it had ever been.

He wanted to say so many things.

How much fun he'd had.

How safe he felt.

How these two days had changed something inside him.

But before he could speak, Keng did.

"Ping," Keng said softly, meeting his eyes.

"I had a lot of fun spending these days with you. I'm looking forward to more days like this."

Ping's smile bloomed-bright, genuine, unmistakable.

In that moment, he became sure.

Sure of what he was feeling.

Sure of his heart.

And though nothing had been said aloud- The confession was no longer silent.
