Chapter 84 - Chapter 81: The Revelation (or How Barney Discovered that Art Can Be Cruel) II

Barney watched them all, painting still in hand, in his purple briefs, in the middle of the kitchen. His indignant expression began to crack.

"Are you laughing at me?" he asked, but it was no longer an accusation. It was almost a genuine question, almost vulnerable.

"Yes," said Robin without hesitation.

"Completely," added Ted.

"Barney," Marshall managed to articulate between laughs, "you have to understand... from our perspective..."

He looked at the painting, then at Barney, then at the painting again, and doubled over once more.

Alyx wiped the tears from her eyes and managed to speak: "Barney, it's... it's the best painting Lily has ever done, without a doubt."

"MY PENIS IS MISSING!" exclaimed Barney, with a mixture of indignation and something that was beginning to resemble resignation.

"I know," said Alyx, her voice trembling from the effort of not laughing again. "That's what makes it perfect."

Barney looked at her. Then he looked at Lily, who had appeared in the kitchen doorway with a barely disguised expression of satisfaction. Then he looked at his friends, all laughing, sharing that absurd and wonderful moment.

And then something unexpected happened.

Barney Stinson smiled.

It wasn't his conquering smile, nor his "I'm incredible and you know it" smile. It was a small, almost shy smile, as if for the first time in a long time, he didn't quite know what to do.

"You really think it's perfect?" he asked, looking at Alyx.

Alyx nodded, still with tears in her eyes. "Barney, she painted you as you are: a magnificent disaster, chaos in human form, someone who walks into rooms as if they belong to him even when they don't. What does it matter what's missing? What matters is what is there."

Barney considered this. He looked at the painting again, this time with different eyes. He saw the heroic pose, yes, but he also saw the vulnerability in the eyes that Lily had unintentionally captured. And finally, he saw the humanity he always tried to hide.

"You really think I'm a magnificent disaster?"

"The most magnificent of all disasters," Alyx confirmed.

Barney nodded slowly. Then he lowered the painting just enough for everyone to see his face over the edge.

"Okay," he said. "But I want compensation."

"What kind of compensation?" asked Lily, suspicious.

"I want everyone to pay for the next round at MacLaren's. And I want Carl to hang the painting behind the bar, where everyone can see it. And I want"—he paused dramatically—"for Alyx to draw me in her sketchbook. But this time, with everything included."

Alyx raised an eyebrow. "You want me to draw your penis?"

"I want," said Barney with dignity, "for you to document my greatness in its entirety. Without artistic omissions."

There was a moment of silence. Then everyone laughed again, but this time it was a different laugh—less hysterical, warmer, shared.

"Deal," said Alyx, extending her hand.

Barney shook it, painting still under his arm, in purple briefs, in the middle of the kitchen. "You're the worst family I could have chosen."

"And yet you chose us," Marshall pointed out.

Barney didn't respond, but he didn't deny it either.

Later, dressed again (in the burgundy velvet jacket retrieved from the coat rack) and with the painting carefully wrapped for transport, Barney said goodbye at the door.

"Lily," he said with unusual seriousness, "it's a masterpiece. Truly. I hate that you did this to me, but it's a masterpiece."

Lily smiled. "I know."

"And you," said Barney, pointing at Alyx, "owe me a drawing. With everything. I'll frame it and hang it next to the painting."

"It won't fit," said Alyx.

"Then I'll buy a bigger wall."

Barney left with the painting under his arm, whistling a song no one recognized.

When the door closed, the five of them stood in silence for a moment.

"Did that really happen?" asked Ted.

"It happened," Marshall confirmed.

"And Barney... took it well?"

"Yeah," said Alyx, with a smile. "I think so."

Robin collapsed onto the sofa. "I never thought I'd say this, but I think Barney Stinson just matured a little."

"Or maybe," said Lily, sitting beside her, "he was always like this, and he just needed someone to see it."

Alyx took her usual place next to Marshall, who automatically put an arm around her shoulders. Lily leaned against her, and Alyx felt the weight of them both—warm and familiar.

"Marsh," said Alyx, "do you think Barney will be okay?"

Marshall thought about it. He remembered the expression on Barney's face when he looked at the painting the second time, when he really looked at it—the small, almost shy smile. And what he had said during the painting session: "My deepest fear is ending up alone."

"Yeah," said Marshall. "I think so. For the first time, Barney Stinson is going to be okay."

Outside, on the street, Barney walked towards his apartment with the painting under his arm. People stared, but he didn't care. He whistled that song no one recognized—a Canadian children's song, though he'd never admit it—and smiled.

When he reached his door, before entering, he held the painting in front of him and contemplated it one more time.

"You're a magnificent disaster," he told himself, repeating Alyx's words. "The most magnificent of all disasters."

And for the first time in a long time, Barney Stinson believed his own words.

At MacLaren's, that night

Carl hung the painting behind the bar, right next to Alyx's page.

"Are you sure you want to put it there?" asked Lily.

Carl shrugged. "That kid's been coming here for years. I've never seen him as happy as he was tonight. The painting stays."

And it stayed.

Years later, when customers asked about the strange painting of the naked man with no attributes, Carl would tell the story. A story about art, friendship, and a man who learned to laugh at himself.

But that, as Ted would say, is another story.
