Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Frost-Drake's Trial

The entrance to the Sepulcher was not a simple hole in the mountain. It was a maw. Carved into the cliff face, framed by two colossal, serpentine pillars of ice-rimed stone that coiled upward like petrified dragons, their detailed scales and snarling heads worn by millennia of wind but still radiating a primal menace. Between them, the tunnel descended into absolute darkness, exhaling a breath so cold it made the surrounding air crackle.

Lin Feng stepped between the stone dragons, feeling the weight of their silent watch. As he moved deeper, the weak light from behind revealed the walls were not bare rock.

They were a chronicle of slaughter, carved in deep, desperate strokes. The first scenes showed humanoid figures—tall, majestic cultivators with flowing robes—standing beneath a sky filled with radiant stars.

Further in, the carvings changed. The same figures were shown in battle against a cataclysmic force: a descending dragon of frost and fire, its wings blotting out the sun, its breath turning armies to statues of ice.

The scenes grew more frantic. Nine particularly powerful cultivators, their features blurred by time, were shown forging immense chains in the heart of a volcano.

The final panel, just before the tunnel opened into the chamber, depicted the dragon bound by those chains, being dragged into the heart of the mountain by the nine figures, their own bodies breaking and bleeding in the process. It was a history of a war, a sacrifice, and a prison.

Then, the chamber opened before him, and the history became flesh—or bone.

The air inside was a living entity of cold and ancient power. Before the colossal skeleton, the spectral projection of Zhao Tianlong coalesced, its voice a glacier grinding through his mind.

"YOU DARE?"

The Trial of Might – The Glacial Coliseum

The first wisp of flame transported Lin Feng not to a plain, but to a vast, circular coliseum carved from blue ice. The stands were empty, the sky a featureless white. Across from him, the ice of the floor surged upward, forming not a simple golem, but a Glacial Juggernaut, Level 4 (Peak Qi Refining).

It was a masterpiece of frozen violence: four arms ending in hammer-like fists, a torso studded with jagged ice spikes, and a head that was little more than a block with two pits of blue fire. It did not charge; it *lumbered*, each step making the arena tremble.

Lin Feng set his stance, the Lin Family Core Fist form coming to him instinctively—"Mountain Root Stance."

The Juggernaut's first hammer-fist descended like a falling tower. Lin Feng did not try to block. He flowed, using a subtle footwork technique from the Purple Heaven Sutra's foundational mobility scroll—"Starlight Sidestep." He was a wisp of shadow, the fist crashing into the ice where he stood, sending up a shower of shards.

Too slow, he thought. But the Juggernaut's second and third arms swung in a wide, interlocking arc, leaving no room to dodge.

Lin Feng planted his feet, channelling Qi in a complex, spiralling pattern up his arms—a defensive technique from the Sutra, "Cyclone Ward." A visible vortex of air and faint starlight shimmered around his forearms.

BOOM!

The impact was monumental. The Cyclone Ward shattered, dissipating the worst of the force, but Lin Feng was skidded back ten feet, his boots carving grooves in the ice, his arms screaming in protest. The cold seeped through, numbing his bones.

Brute force won't work. Precision. Weak points.

He lunged forward as the Juggernaut reeled from its own swing. Using the "Starlight Sidestep" to blur around its flank, he aimed a Lin Core Fist: "Drilling Fist" enhanced with a piercing intent borrowed from the Sutra's "Starlight Pierce" concept, targeting the back of its knee joint.

CRACK-SHATTER!

The leg buckled. The Juggernaut roared silently, one arm swinging backwards blindly. Lin Feng ducked, the frozen fist whistling over his head. He saw his opening: the junction of the spine at the base of its blocky head.

Gathering all his Qi, he performed a move that was neither purely Lin nor purely Purple Heaven, but a fusion born of desperation—a Lin Core Fist "Leaping Tiger" launch, with a Purple Heaven "Starlight Pierce" focused into his knuckles.

He became a projectile. His fist, surrounded by a coruscating nimbus of silver light, slammed into the icy spine.

"BREAK!"

The Juggernaut froze. Then, from the point of impact, radiant cracks of silver light spiderwebbed through its entire body. It exploded into a harmless blizzard of glittering ice dust.

Lin Feng landed, panting heavily, his Qi sea half-drained, his knuckles bleeding and frostbitten. The coliseum faded.

The Trial of Resolve – The Hall of Mirrors

The second trial was a sensory deprivation followed by an overwhelming assault. Lin Feng stood in utter darkness and silence. Then, whispers began, not from outside, but from within his own memories, given voice by the dragon's power.

"Cripple." (The voice of his cousin, Lin Cheng.)

"Disappointment." (The imagined sigh of his father.)

"Why won't you just die and stop being a burden?" (A twisted, cruel version of his mother's voice.)

The darkness dissolved into a hundred mirrors, each reflecting a different failure, a different humiliation. He saw himself being beaten, being ignored, his mother crying over his sickbed. The emotional weight was a physical pressure, seeking to crush him to his knees.

"This is your truth," the dragon's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. "You are the sum of your defeats. Your perseverance is the twitching of a crushed insect. Acknowledge it. Find peace in oblivion."

A warm, inviting numbness beckoned at the edge of his consciousness. To let go… it would be so easy.

Lin Feng closed his eyes in the heart of the psychic storm. He did not fight the memories. He walked through them. He felt the shame of his beating, then focused on the cold fury that had followed. He heard his mother's tears, then focused on the fierce, protective love it ignited in him.

"I am not my wounds," he stated, his voice quiet but iron-clad in the maelstrom. "I am the scar. I am the healing. And I am the will that decides what grows from the scarred earth."

He opened his eyes and took a deliberate step forward, towards the most painful mirror—the one showing his past-life betrayal. Instead of flinching, he looked his murderer in the eye and said, "You failed. I am still here."

The mirror and all the others shattered into a million pieces, dissolving into light.

The Trial of Soul – The Heart of the Blizzard

He was back in the bone-chamber, but the skeleton was gone. In its place was the full, terrifying spiritual presence of Zhao Tianlong, a raging blizzard given sentience and pride.

"The final test, little mortal. Your soul has passed through fire and ice. Now, let it be measured against the VOID!"

This was not an attack. It was an unmaking. The dragon's consciousness, a vast, frozen, and lonely cosmos, enveloped Lin Feng's soul. It did not seek to crush, but to dissolve. To tell his soul that its individual shape was an illusion, that merging with the eternal, frozen grandeur of the dragon was the only true existence.

Lin Feng's sense of self began to blur. The edges softened. Memories of his mother's face, the taste of congee, the feel of his training robes—all began to lose meaning, fading into a beautiful, silent, white nothingness.

You are a note. Become the symphony.

You are a drop. Become the ocean.

Cease your futile struggle. Be eternal.

The temptation was profound. It promised an end to all struggle, all pain. To be part of something so vast and powerful…

At the very core of his dissolving consciousness, something flared. Not his past-life memories. Not his current will.

It was the Fractured Heavenly Spiritual Root within him—the latent, broken, supreme-grade connection to the cosmos that had made him a genius and then a cripple. In the face of this external, overwhelming spiritual force, the root did not activate, but it resonated. It emitted a faint, immutable frequency of selfhood, a stubborn declaration of unique existence against the homogenizing void.

The dragon's consciousness recoiled, not in pain, but in shock.

"That… resonance… a Heavenly root? Broken, yes… but the echo…" The blizzard of its will paused. The pressure shifted from dissolution to intense, scrutinizing focus. It was no longer trying to absorb him; it was *examining* the curious, flawed diamond of his soul.

Lin Feng, clinging to that tiny echo of his root, held on. He shaped his will around it. I am Lin Feng. I am.

Minutes, or centuries, later, the pressure vanished.

The majestic projection of the Frost-Drake shrank, dwindling to the two faint wisps in the skeletal skull. The voice that emerged was thin, weary, and stripped of all arrogance, filled only with the stark clarity of finality.

"A mountain soul… and a sky-born echo within it. Flawed. Interesting. Worthy of a bargain."

The inheritance proceeded as before—the marrow's agonizing purification, the acceptance of the Source Spark, the vow to return the bones. The dragon's last consciousness faded with a final, whispered thought: "Do not let the frost go out…"

Exhausted but reborn in the middle of the 6th Stage of Qi Refining, Lin Feng explored the chamber.

His new spatial ring, now unlocked, held the personal treasury of Star-Binder Zhao. Among spirit stones and ruined texts, he found a small, intact forge hammer of black iron that felt unnaturally heavy, and a set of master-level smithing tongs—tools for a later time.

He would not forge here; the collapsing cave allowed no time. But he gathered the materials he would need. He pried Frost-Iron from the walls, harvested clusters of Glacial Crystal that grew like fungus on the bones, and collected handfuls of Frost-Grass, a silvery herb that radiated intense cold.

His greatest find came from the edges of the skeleton itself: a dozen loose, palm-sized Drake-Scales, sapphire-blue and harder than steel, the edges so sharp they cut the air.

He stored it all. The plan was clear: Frost-Iron for the body, Glacial Crystals for power conduits in the knuckles, Frost-Grass pulverized into the alloy for enhanced cold emission, and the inviolable Drake-Scales layered over the knuckles and forearms for peerless defense and cutting power.

He would forge the Frost-Scale Gauntlets himself, with his Frostblaze Seed as his furnace, once he was safe.

The cave groaned its death rattle. He swept the entire dragon skeleton into his ring just as the ceiling began to fall.

The Ice-Maw Hyena Pack:

The pack of six Level 2 beasts circled them on a frozen lake. Lin Feng didn't wait. He activated "Starlight Sidestep," becoming a phantom.

He didn't use fancy techniques. He used speed and his new, marrow-enhanced strength.

He grabbed the lead hyena by the neck and slammed it down onto the ice with a Lin Core Fist "Shattering Drop," the ice cracking radially. The others pounced. Lin Chu moved, his spear a blur of silver.

"River Serpent's Strike!" he shouted, his technique fast and fluid, the spearhead piercing a hyena's eye and out the back of its skull in one motion

. Lin Nan's style was different—brutal and direct. He stomped, making the ice shudder, and thrust his spear in a straight, overpowering line—"Mountain-Piercing Thrust!"—impaling two hyenas that were leaping together. Lin Feng finished the last two with precise, gauntlet-less blows to their temples.

The Frost Lynx Ambush:

The Level 3 lynx was a streak of grey fury from the treetops. It raked Lin Feng's back before he could fully turn. Blood welled, freezing instantly. Pain sharpened his focus. He couldn't match its aerial agility, so he made it come to him. He stood still, breathing erratically, pretending worse injury.

The lynx coiled and sprang for his throat. At the last millisecond, Lin Feng dropped low and unleashed a technique from the Purple Heaven Sutra's close-quarter combat chapter—

"Nova Palm."

His palm, glowing with compressed stellar Qi, did not strike the body, but the air in front of the lynx's chest. The concussive blast of light and force shattered its ribs mid-air and flung it, yowling, into a tree trunk. Lin Nan finished it with a swift "Heart-Seeking Lunge."

 The Shard-Scale Bear (Level 4):

The true grind began. The bear's hide deflected Lin Chu's "River Serpent" strikes and Lin Nan's "Mountain-Piercing" thrusts. Its icy aura slowed them.

Lin Feng became the distraction. He used "Starlight Sidestep" to dance around it, drawing its wrath. A backhand swipe caught him. He crossed his arms in a "Cyclone Ward."

The ward shattered, and he was hurled through a thicket, bones rattled. He rose, coughing blood, smiling. "My turn," he spat.

He charged again, not directly, but in a spiralling pattern. As the bear turned to track him, Lin Chu saw an opening.

"Dragon-Tail Sweep!" he roared, his spear not thrusting, but whipping in a low, powerful arc, cracking against the bear's ankle. It stumbled. Lin Nan roared,

"Heavenly Pillar Crash!"

He jumped, bringing his spear down like a falling tree onto the bear's shoulder, driving it to one knee.

Lin Feng was there. He abandoned technique for pure, amplified power. He gathered all his Qi, his Frostblaze Seed flaring for the first time in combat. His fists grew coated in rime. He delivered a point-blank, double-fisted blow to the side of the bear's head—a move without name, just "FROSTBURST IMPACT."

There was a wet crunch, and a wave of cold exploded inward. The bear's eye froze solid and shattered. It fell.

The Glacial Shadow-Panther (Level 5):

This was a dance with death. The panther was semi-corporeal, becoming mist to avoid strikes, solidifying to kill.

Lin Chu's "One Hundred River Strikes" technique created a defensive screen of spearheads, keeping it at bay momentarily.

Lin Nan used "Unmoving Mountain Stance," his spear planted, becoming an immovable object to block its charges, each impact shaking him violently, blood trickling from his nose.

Lin Feng realized direct attacks were useless. He remembered a low-level sensory technique from the Purple Heaven Sutra: "Starlight Perception."

He closed his eyes, spending precious Qi to sense not with sight, but with spiritual resonance. He could *feel* the panther's cold, dense life-force shifting through the mist.

"There!" he yelled, pointing. Lin Chu thrust blindly at the spot. The panther solidified, dodging, but now they could track it. It was a battle of attrition. Lin Feng used "Nova Palm" not to hit, but to detonate in the mist, disrupting its form. He took another gash, this time across the chest.

Lin Nan's arm was broken by a mist-shrouded paw. But they were wearing it down.

In a final, coordinated move, Lin Chu sacrificed his spear, throwing it like a javelin with "Flying River Dragon" to pin the panther's shadow to a tree for a half-second.

Lin Nan, screaming through pain, charged and used his body as a battering ram to hold it. Lin Feng, every meridian screaming, channeled all his remaining Qi and the Frostblaze Seed into his palm. This was not "Nova Palm."

This was an embryonic, unstable fusion he'd never attempt again—"Frostblaze Detonation."

He slammed his palm into the panther's side. A silent, blue-white flash. Then a shockwave of alternating searing heat and absolute cold. The panther's flesh crystallized and blackened simultaneously. It shrieked, a sound of pure agony, and fled into the deep wood, badly maimed.

The three cultivators collapsed. They were a mosaic of wounds. But they were alive.

Return to the City Gates

The rest of the journey was a painful slog. By the time the Northern Gates rose before them, they were three figures of blood-caked rags and grim determination, stinking of sweat, iron, and beast.

The city was in festival frenzy. Banners for the Lin, Wang, Li, Zhang, and Murong families flapped. Proud young masters in embroidered silks and jade hairpieces strutted, followed by retinues.

"Ugh, what is that stench? Did the sewers back up?" sneered a young man in Wang family colours, holding a perfumed handkerchief to his nose as Lin Feng's group shuffled past.

"Look at them! Like wild dogs that lost a fight with a mountain," laughed another.

Lin Feng kept his head down, the hood shadowing his eyes. Inside his ring, the dragon's bones lay still. The Frostblaze Seed pulsed warmly in his dantian. The materials for his gauntlets waited. His body, though filthy, thrummed with the clean, potent power of the 6th Stage, honed in a crucible of ice and blood.

He listened to the jeers of the perfumed young masters, their faces plump with privilege. A cold, hard smile touched his cracked lips, unseen by all.

Let the peacocks preen, he thought, the memory of the Shard-Scale Bear's skull giving way under his fists flashing in his mind. Tomorrow, the ceremony begins. And this 'wild dog' has learned to bite with the frost of a dragon.

He passed through the towering gate, leaving the wild behind, stepping into the den of human politics and arrogance. The real trial was about to begin.
