Chapter 7 - Chapter 6 — The Egg

I moved closer.

The faint glow I had noticed earlier wasn't coming from metal, crystal, or treasure light.

It was… organic.

Nestled in a shallow depression in the cave wall sat a smooth, oval object, about the size of a large melon. Its surface shimmered faintly, not with light, but with reflected mana in the water-soaked stone around it.

"…An egg?"

The moment the thought crossed my mind, the system reacted.

DING.

A panel snapped open before my eyes.

[TREASURE SYSTEM — ENTITY DETECTED]

[Classification: Living Treasure (Dormant)]

My breath caught.

Living… treasure?

I focused on the egg.

[INSPECT — Tidecoil Serpent (Egg)]

[Status: Dormant]

[Growth Stage: Juvenile — Unhatched]

[Affinity: Ocean / Mana Adaptation]

[Description:]

A Tidecoil Serpent egg formed in a high-mana ocean environment.

The hatchling will possess innate mana-adaptive physiology, allowing its body to grow or shrink in response to ambient mana density.

This ability strengthens with age.

[Bond Compatibility:]— High compatibility with Beast Resonance–type talents— Emotional imprinting possible before hatching

My throat went dry.

A Tidecoil Serpent.

An sea serpent—rare, intelligent, and notoriously difficult to even encounter, let alone bond with.

And this one… wasn't just nearby.

It was right here.

Waiting.

Protected.

By Mother's illusions.

The realization sent a chill down my spine.

This cave.

The calm water.

The absence of predators.

None of it was coincidence.

The ocean had hidden this place.

And my mother's power had unknowingly kept it safe.

I crouched slowly, careful not to disturb the egg. Up close, its shell was cool to the touch, silver with faint blue accents running through it like veins in polished stone.

It didn't glow.

It breathed.

Not physically—but in mana. A gentle, rhythmic pulse.

I swallowed.

"This isn't mine," I murmured instinctively.

The words felt… important.

The system didn't contradict me.

I thought of Lio.

His laughter.

His reckless courage.

The way beasts always seemed calmer around him.

The Beast Resonance talent I had seen earlier that morning.

My chest tightened.

This wasn't just a treasure.

It was a future companion.

A partner.

A bond that could shape Lio's entire path.

Slowly, carefully, I stepped back from the egg.

"I know who you're meant for." I promised softly.

The Tidecoil Serpent egg pulsed once—subtly.

As if it had heard me.

And for the first time since the system awakened, I felt something deeper than excitement.

I felt responsibility.

I turned away from the egg and faced the chest.

The bronze bands creaked softly as I lifted the lid.

Inside—

Coins.

Hundreds of them. No—thousands. Bronze coins stacked and layered, dulled by age but untouched by corrosion. And resting neatly on top of the pile was a small cloth bag, its drawstring tied tight.

My fingers closed around it.

Careful. Curious.

I loosened the string and turned the bag upside down.

A gem fell out.

Then another.

And another.

They kept coming.

Clear-cut mana crystals, smooth gemstones, rough shards—each clinking softly as they struck the cave floor, forming a growing pile that glittered faintly in the reflected light from the cave entrance.

I stared, momentarily stunned.

Then—

DING.

[TREASURE COLLECTED]

[Name: Maren Shipwreck]

[Quality: Bronze]

[Contents Registered:]

— [Bronze Coins × 5000]

— [Gems × 200+]

— [Item: Spatial Bag]

I let out a slow breath.

"…So this is what Grandpa lost."

Five thousand bronze coins was already a small fortune for a single island family. The gems alone could fund multiple expeditions. And the spatial bag—

I reached down and picked it up.

A simple-looking pouch, reinforced seams, faint runes etched into the inner lining.

I focused.

[INSPECT — Spatial Bag]

[Type: Storage Item]

[Quality: Bronze]

[Capacity: 2 cubic meters]

[Description:]A low-grade spatial container created by a runic craftsman.

Can store non-living objects only.

My lips curved into a faint smile.

A treasure chest… containing another treasure.

The system hadn't lied.

This was a complete recovery.

And the moment I mentally acknowledged it, another subtle notification appeared.

[TREASURE SENSE FEEDBACK]

[Bronze Treasure Registered Successfully]

[Contribution logged toward system growth]

I looked once more at the coins, the gems, the bag—then back toward the deeper part of the cave, where the Tidecoil Serpent egg rested undisturbed.

Two discoveries.

One for wealth.

One for destiny.

Carefully, I gathered the coins and gems, guiding them into the spatial bag. The pouch absorbed them soundlessly, its shape unchanged despite the weight it now carried.

I tied the string and secured it at my belt.

Then I closed the chest.

Not everything needed to be taken today.

As I stepped back toward the water, the system remained quiet—watching, recording.

And somewhere deep beneath the island, the ocean stirred.

My gaze drifted back to the Tidecoil Serpent egg.

Carefully, I took out the spatial bag and focused, willing the egg toward it.

Nothing happened.

I tried again.

Still nothing.

Then the system responded.

[ITEM TRANSFER FAILED]

[Target: Living Entity]

"…Figures."

I exhaled softly and stopped trying.

The egg stayed where it was—safe, undisturbed, quietly pulsing with mana. I glanced at the pile of gems next, then shook my head.

Not today.

Some things deserved patience.

Instead, I focused on the coins.

One by one—or rather, in controlled batches—I guided them into the spatial bag. The pouch accepted them without resistance, swallowing five thousand bronze coins without changing its shape or weight.

When I was done, the chest stood empty except for dust and memory.

I tied the bag securely, took one last look at the cave—and the egg—and then dove back into the water.

The swim back up felt lighter.

When I finally pulled myself onto the rocks near the eastern cliff, the sun had climbed higher into the sky.

And I wasn't alone.

"Kael!" Bren's voice rang out first. He jogged toward me, relief plain on his face. "There you are! We've been looking everywhere."

Then he grinned.

"Happy birthday."

I blinked.

"…Thanks."

Before I could say anything else, Lio stepped in front of me, arms crossed, brows furrowed.

"You didn't tell me," he accused.

I tilted my head. "Tell you what?"

"My own brother's birthday!" he shot back. "Do you know how bad that makes me look?"

Bren snorted.

"I was going to surprise you," I said calmly.

"That's not how surprises work!" Lio protested. "You're supposed to remind people before the day, not disappear and almost drown!"

"I didn't drown."

"You almost drowned."

I smiled faintly.

Somehow, standing there with Bren grinning and Lio scolding me, the weight in my chest eased.

I adjusted the strap of the spatial bag at my waist, careful not to draw attention to it.

Coins recovered.

A family legacy reclaimed.

A future bond waiting beneath the waves.

And for the first time since the system awakened, I felt… grounded.

Whatever lay ahead—

I wouldn't be facing it alone.
