Fifth grade had started almost the same way as the previous year.
The classroom was just as noisy, the desks were just as crowded, and Lakshith was still the same mischievous boy who enjoyed teasing everyone around him.
Riya had hoped things would be a little quieter this year, but that hope disappeared within the first few weeks.
One afternoon, the classroom suddenly erupted into loud shouting.
Two boys were arguing near the teacher's desk, and several students had gathered around them.
Voices overlapped, accusations were thrown around, and no one seemed to understand what exactly had happened.
Riya looked up from her notebook, confused by the sudden chaos.
"What is going on?" she asked one of her classmates.
"I don't know," the girl replied, shrugging.
"Someone said a project file went missing."
Another student added, "They think someone took it."
The argument grew louder.
Finally, Riya stood up and walked toward the group.
She didn't even know the full story, but she hated the noise and confusion.
"Stop shouting!" she said firmly.
Her voice was calm but strong enough to make the students pause.
"Arguing like this won't solve anything. Just wait until the teacher comes," she added.
The students slowly returned to their seats, though several of them were still muttering complaints.
Riya returned to her desk, still confused about what had actually happened.
Later that afternoon, as the final bell rang, she packed her bag and walked out of the classroom with her friends.
"So… what was that fight about?" she asked them.
Her friends shook their heads.
"No idea," one of them said. "We didn't understand anything either."
Riya sighed.
There was only one person who seemed to know everything that happened in class.
Unfortunately, that person was Lakshith.
She spotted him walking ahead near the corridor and reluctantly called out, "Lakshith!"
He turned around, surprised. "What? So you finally need my help?"
Riya ignored his teasing. "What was the fight about earlier?"
Lakshith walked beside her as they headed toward the school gate.
"Oh, that?" he said casually. "One boy thought someone stole his science project. Turns out he just left it in the library."
Riya blinked. "That's it?"
"Yeah,"
Lakshith shrugged.
"People panic too quickly."
They walked in silence for a few moments as they reached the playground.
For once, Lakshith wasn't teasing her.
"You know," he said after a moment, "It was kind of funny watching you stop the whole class."
Riya frowned slightly. "I didn't stop anything."
"You did," he insisted. "Everyone actually listened to you."
Riya looked away, slightly embarrassed.
"You're not as silent as you pretend to be," Lakshith added with a grin.
"And you're not as annoying as you think you are," she replied without thinking.
Lakshith raised an eyebrow. "Wow. Is that a compliment?"
Riya immediately regretted saying it.
"No," she said quickly.
"Don't misunderstand."
Lakshith laughed softly as they continued walking toward the gate.
For the first time, their conversation felt… normal.
No teasing. No arguments.
Just talking.
As Riya walked home that evening, she found herself thinking about their conversation.
Maybe Lakshith wasn't as bad as she always believed.
Maybe… he was actually a little different.
And without realizing it,
That small thought quietly planted the first seed of something new in her heart.
