[Izuku Midoriya POV]
I stared up at All Might's grinning face as he posed heroically after scattering the sludge villain.
'Not going to lie, seeing him in person, the TV screen doesn't do him justice, the man is like ten times cooler but more than that he's much taller than he seems.'
I was a little stunned seeing him. My mouth didn't drop to the floor, and my heart didn't race any more than it already was from running, but I was in a little awe, I won't lie.
At the end of the day, I am an All Might fan, maybe not to the level of Midoriya from canon, but I still am. So seeing him in person is honestly a little overwhelming.
"Y-you all might," I said clearing my throat, only just now realizing how dry it is.
'Wow, Izuku is very clever.'
"Indeed I am! Tell me young man are you unharmed?"
"Yes thank you for uh, saving me," Izuku said awkwardly.
"It's no problem young man, now if you'll excuse me." All Might smiled even wider than before as his perfect white teeth reflected the sunlight.
All might turned around before revealing two large bottles and began gathering up the sludge villain. I offered to help but he said that it would be better if I waited.
After a little while I approached All-Might as he continued to pick up sludge.
"Umm, All Might if it's not too much trouble could I have your autograph it's for my sister and her best friend," I said, holding out my hero notebook and a sharpie.
"Hmm of course young man that's not an issue." Looking over his shoulder All might closed the bottle and turned around. Taking the pen and moving with a speed my eyes couldn't track All Might signed the notebook and recapped the Sharpie.
"Alright young man it was a pleasure meeting you but I must be on my way." Then handing it back to me he turned around and crouched.
Realizing what was about to happen before I could even think twice I grabbed onto him with all my strength as he leaped into the air. Wind hit my face hard enough to distort my features as we soared up into the a leaving a thunderous crack behind us.
Buildings streaked past me at breakneck speed, and for the very first time in my life, I got a pure look at the entire city below me. When you're this high up everything seems so small yet so big, as if all your problems cease to matter for that one instant of pure freedom followed by the realization of just how dangerous this actually is hitting me all at once.
In that instant, All Might turns to notice my eyes growing wide as I hang on for dear life. If I ever had any doubts about how much I wanted to live before, I certainly don't now.
"Huh your one crazy kid let go of me!" He shouts over the wind and he almost starts trying to shake me off.
"If I let go now I'll die!"
He sighed landing on a nearby building. I coughed and squinted my eyes stinging from the wind and wiped away a few tears.
"That was very reckless, young man and you could have been badly hurt."
"I'm sorry it's just there's a question I need to ask you."
I already know what his answer will be and I can feel a strange deep pit beginning to open inside my chest. Half of me is doing it for the plan but the other half for some reason desperately needs to know. It was like a thorn in his heart he just couldn't remove without hearing the words.
[Third Person POV]
"D-do you think… someone like me… someone without a quirk I mean… could be a hero?" Mustering all his conviction Izuku locked eyes with the number one hero, a man he had admired for not just all his life but in his previous one as well.
All Might locked eyes with Izuku his gaze becoming serious. He didn't laugh or mock Izuku instead he treated the question with the gravity it deserved.
He opened his mouth to answer, only for him to spew out a mouthful of blood and puff out a cloud of smoke and steam from all over his body.
Izuku's eyes widened he had forgotten that was going to happen and when it did without thinking he rushed over to help.
"Oh my god All Might are you okay? Can I get you anything?" She rushed over patting All Might on the back, his eyes searching for something he could do to help.
The anime showed there was a big difference between his true and small forms but even that didn't clearly represent the difference between them.
"I'm fine kid, thank you." All Might wheezed out after a few more coughs of blood he straightened back up. Izuku asked what happened to him mainly because it would be weird if he acted like he already knew.
"I got into a fight five years ago. Not one you would have heard of since I did my best to keep it under wraps."
Their conversation about it carried on for a little while until All Might ultimately got back around to the main subject.
"Ahem as for the answer to your question. Do I think you can become a hero without a quirk? I'd have to so no you can't. I'm sorry but you'll never be a hero." He said solumly. He didn't want to hurt the boy's feelings but without a quirk, All Might believed there was just no way it was possible. The power gap was just too large the dangers too high and no matter how hard the boy trained he could never close that gap.
"I see, so you to huh?" The boy said looking down at the ground. His voice was quiet, softer than before but not crushed, not weak, just hollow. As if despair itself had sunk in its class and began to pour in.
"Listen there-" All Might tried to cut in and reassure the boy. Even if the emerald child couldn't pursue his dream there were several other respectable professions.
"It's fine All Might. Really it is. People have been telling me I can't become a hero all my life. That someone like me can't become a hero without a quirk. Well, I'll say to you what I said to them."
Izukus' fists balled and over the course of his words, something new appeared within him. At first, he was sad to hear the words had echoed All Mights canon response. But then a new feeling arose within him.
It was defiance.
Defiance at the world around him, defiance to the words people had kept repeating to him since he was little. Defiance at the snickers and the weak bullies. Defiance at Bakugo's rage, defiance at Aunt Mitsuki's worried glances, defiance at his sisters' worried words.
But most of all defiance at his mother's tears that day. He would defy his own fate if he had to. He refused to stay small and was afraid of the future ahead of him.
Fate, destiny, canon, timelines, predetermined futures? He couldn't care less
"If no one has done it before then I'll just have to be the first! My name is Izuku Midorya and I am going to be a hero no matter what anyone says!" Izuku's words had pierced through All Might's heart like a blade. His eyes which shone with a fire and a light that not even the darkest of days could put out stared directly into All Might's soul.
In that moment All Might saw something in Izuku's eyes. Something that he himself had lost long ago. Although it was something he couldn't quite place he knew it was special.
"I see… well then young Midorya I wish you good luck."
With that, All Might took his leave, to him today was just like any other so far, but he couldn't have imagined that this was arguably the most important day of his entire life.
Why because as he noticed the growing blaze in the distance and made his way over to see that very same sludge villain from before attempting to molest a girl with what seemed like a rather strong quirk while fending off several heroes All Might felt completely helpless. In his heart for the very first time in a very long time, the despair of weakness filled him fully to the brim.
He had meant to meet with Nighteye for an important discussion. To see what was so important that he had broken years of bad arguments and cold shoulders for.
But that moment, he was no longer the symbol of peace, no longer the strong, brave, bright young hero he once was. Instead, he was a shadow of his former self, standing helplessly as a bound girl fought for her life.
He wasn't the hero that Nighteye had looked up to or the boy Nana had chosen as her successor. It was as if in that one moment all the weight he'd carried on his massive shoulders for years had suddenly doubled.
But as he stood there feeling like a failure something astonishing happened. The heroes stood there and did nothing, the civilians stood there and did nothing, even he, the man considered the world's greatest hero stood there and did nothing.
But this boy.
This young, quirkless, seemingly helpless boy, ran into the flames without hesitation.
The way he moved, how he fought, all of it landed like a slap to All Might's face.
He ran forward dodging the thrown objects and panicked explosions from the captured girl.
First, he blinded the villain by throwing his bag into the green beast's face, proceeded to strike the villain with a technique that completely stunned it despite its liquid form, then he simply ripped the girl out of his chest with an ease that surprised everyone around.
Then carrying the girl away with a swiftness All Might hadn't thought possible he set her down from a princess carry.
The girl seemed fine but judging from how she was covered in green goo, red enough in the face to remind All Might of a tomato, and swearing up a storm so fierce that it even made him finch.
He'd fought the villain and saved the girl accomplishing what the heroes couldn't and what All Might wouldn't do in only a minute or two.
All Might felt pathetic, guilty, exhausted, and relieved all at once. But more than any of that he felt inspired.
This young, quirkless boy had done what the heroes couldn't, and All Might wouldn't do.
The Sludge Villain recovered from the stunning blows. The Slimy man lunged forward hoping to catch the arguing duo off guard only for the young man to turn and stare.
A shockwave of pure will crashed forth from the boy stunning the Sludge villain into stillness before causing him to collapse into a puddle.
All might not haven't noticed it before but he did now.
The boy had used haki.
Not only had he used observation to dodge all of the villain's attacks, coated his fists with armorment in order to strike his fluid form, but then he had also unleashed a wave of conquerors' haki precisely enough to knock out the sludge villain and not affect anyone else.
All Might who had already started shifting into his large form had stopped. He went completely still seeing what this boy could do in the face of danger.
The sheer level of potential on display.
Not only did the boy have use of haki and tactical instinct to use them in a real conflict he even had the characteristics of a king as well.
All Might, no, Toshinori Yagi was stunned. He'd found the one he had been looking for.
A successor. But Yagi like the fool he was, had told the boy he could never be a hero.
Yet he had also seemed determined to try anyway, even if the whole world fought against him.
Toshinori had to fix this. More than that he had to train the boy to become his successor. He could see it now, that young man as the next symbol of peace.
So as soon as the heroes had gotten done scolding Toshinori followed the boy as subtly as he could.
The sun started to set and golden hour took hold of the city streets. Soon enough Izuku neared his home only to be stopped by a red-faced Katsumi shouting something about not needing his help and how she would have been fine on her own.
There was even a Baka thrown in there for good measure. The interaction just made him chuckle and shake his head.
The funniest part?
Katsumi's bond level had rapidly shot up since the moment he saved her and was only growing throughout their whole interaction.
By the end of it, she had been tied with Toga at 60%. But if she wanted her little crush to work out Katsumi would have to get her act together.
He found it more cute than anything, and if she could actually get him to feel the same, or even dared to confess her feelings, he really saw no reason to reject her.
Plus he thought it would probably be fun to tease her a little more from now on. Before he had only considered her a potential rival of his. Someone who could push him to his limits and help him reach his full potential.
As Izuku walked home though it brought a warm smile to his face. It seemed like everything for once was in its right place.
He enjoyed the fresh Musutafu air and the golden hues of the setting sun. They seemed to reflect the budding hope and the slight anxiety in his chest.
Then it happened. Izuku's path back home was cut off by the number one hero himself.
"All Might?"
"Hello again young Midorya. I came here to thank you, and also to discuss your question from earlier."
"If you hadn't told me about the life and you hadn't run into that fight I don't know how I could even look myself in the mirror. You saved that girl while I was just a helpless bystander."
"No it was my fault he was there to begin with. I'm sorry I got in your way All Might. My body just moved before I even had a chance to think."
"No it's not your fault Midorya there was no way you could have known that would happen. Plus you don't even have a power so when I saw this brave quirkless boy try to save a life, it inspired me." Those words which were meant solely as praise, cut through Izuku then and there. In that moment he didn't feel brave at all. The only thing he felt like was a fraud, and an undeserving one at that.
Still, he kept his face neutral with the tiniest hint of awe thrown in for extra points.
"There are stories about every hero, how they became great. Most have one thing in common. Their bodies moved before they had a chance to think, almost on their own." Toshinori's voice blossomed with reverence and the weight of thousands of lives carried behind him.
"And today that's what happened to you."
Countless hours of training, hoping, and dreaming flooded back into Izuku's mind.
Training to be the best there ever was.
Hoping to fulfill a destiny that seemed far too large for any one man.
Dreaming that one day his own dreams would come true.
Now here it was the day he'd been training, hoping, and dreaming for was now right in front of him and he could finally hear the words he'd longed to hear for so long.
"Young man… You too can become a hero."
The words alone brought Izuku to tears but he didn't let them fall. His whole body shook with controlled breathing and it took everything he had not to go to his knees.
And so on that day All Might and Izuku Midorya would change the course of history. All might would reveal to him the secret of one for all and how it could be transferred from person to person with each user growing stronger than the last.
And so the offer came.
"Izuku Midorya will you become my successor?" All Might held out his hand the offer made clear and the destiny that came along with it.
In Izuku's eyes that hand seemed to promise him everything he ever wanted and everything he eve ever feared. It almost glowed with the light of a thousand stars. A once in a life time opportunity.
"I accept." Izuku's voice firm dispute the tears that lingered in his eyes reached out and took All Might's hand.
He would accept it all. The burden and the blessing. The glory and the purpose behind it. All the good and all the bad. All carried on one man's shoulders and passed on to another. He would carry that weight for as long as he possibly could and then some.
And as the two clasped hands and shook. Toshinori Yagi and Izuku Midoriya would begin the tale of how the hero king was born.
