Chapter 9 - a failed advance

One of the creatures concentrates energy in its lower limbs.

The concentrated magic tones its thighs, causing its muscles to contract, absorbing as much force as it can generate.

Its calves brace its body, maintaining its posture at a right angle, ready to be launched at its target.

Its feet were firmly on the ground, connecting the force generated in its thighs with the soil; with a simple movement, all that energy would generate the propulsion to fly towards its prey.

Its scaly tail was ready to steer its body in the correct trajectory, practically like a ship's rudder.

It was ready for this; those creatures weren't ignorant. They realized they couldn't break through the defense from a distance.

The trio's archer was skilled; his arrows had the same power as the spells in their arsenal, and were faster.

He could easily cancel any spell before even approaching the bridge, so the objective now was different.

They need to at least weaken the archer.

If the reptilian preparing his attack manages to land a critical hit, even a non-lethal one, it will turn the tide.

With the archer suffering this blow, he would reduce the speed of his arrows, or the number of them, which would completely weaken his defense.

That's why the reptilian is ready to take the risk. He was the fastest and the best at performing maneuvers in mid-air.

So his function was simple: weaken the archer.

His trajectory was already decided; he would use the smoke to advance undetected by any of the three, then land a blow on the archer's right arm, gain momentum on the bridge to jump to the other asteroid.

A simple movement for him; his sensory system could determine the position of each enemy, so he would take advantage of this chance to hit the archer.

And without further ado, he jumped.

*Boom*

*Crash*

The jump was extraordinary, a powerful leap propelled by the strength of his legs enhanced by muscular and biological magic.

In mid-air, his tail did its work; each movement of this fifth limb controlled the direction of his body, which floated meters above the ground.

It was almost like flying, and he was good at it.

In his mind, the sequence of events was decided; his shaft axe was being enveloped in magical energy.

The blade displayed an unusual glow, a sign of the reinforcement spell that enchanted the weapon's blade.

A simple magic, serving only to amplify the capabilities the object already possessed, but that wasn't all he would use.

The objective was a critical hit, so he would have to use everything he could.

His weapon gained a greenish glow, making the metal of the axe slightly less rigid. Gradually, the metal edge of the axe took on a greenish color and seemed to melt like a candle.

The weapon was now imbued with a powerful spell, one that enchanted the weapon with a deadly acidic poison, corroding all organic matter it touched.

But it still wasn't enough to satisfy his intention.

The metal of the axe gained a glow again, but this one was different; it was hotter, conveying a sensation of heat, and gradually transformed into pure magical flames.

These magical flames displayed multiple bright points, covering the entire extent of the spell, differentiating this fire made from mana from a natural flame.

The weapon was ready, its magical energy hidden. His race was masterful at concealing their presence, even if the technique he was using now wasn't as efficient as the one they used to ambush the trio, it was still a well-executed concealment.

It was untraceable by ordinary mana sensors, and its position was meticulously aligned with the glowing smoke, which maintained its existence there by burning the fused mana of the two spells.

Speaking of that smoke, he would use it to surprise his targets.

His elastic tail guided the rest of his body through the smoke; it was a dangerous movement for a small creature like him, but the danger was already anticipated.

His scales gained a protective layer made with a mana coating, each scale glowing as if it had its own bioluminescence.

It was a simple defense; he didn't need it for long, just long enough to get past the reactions present in the smoke screen.

His body floated towards the colored mist, without further preparation, he charged forward. His target was already visible in his sensory area, and luckily, it was focused on the reptilians present on the asteroid the attacker left behind.

Apparently, the archer hadn't noticed his approach, which would be great for that small bipedal reptile. If the archer were distracted, perhaps even an arm could be torn off.

His body passed through the curtain, the defense already crumbling under the magical functions present in it, his eyes, though weak, locked onto his target.

With the little propulsion he had left, he floated towards the archer. His eyes thirsted for blood, ready to strike a vital point.

The reptilian was 9 meters from the archer, his target right there, and even with him within the archer's range, the latter seemed to ignore his existence.

His trained eyes focused on the others, paying no attention to who was in front of him.

This filled that reptile with confidence; his race had great ingenuity, but they were still naive.

The attacker was convinced he could even execute his target; he didn't think for a single second about why the archer didn't care about his presence, and that cost him his life.

It was too late when he realized he had fallen into a trap; his eyes were so focused on the archer that he ignored everything else, including someone who had escaped his sensory tactics.

Dragomir was perfectly positioned, his lowered body escaping the reptilian's line of sight, providing the perfect angle for a counterattack.

With carefully prepared lethality, the swordsman struck, his blade creating a path in the air until it reached the creature's waist; the connection with the scaly body was the final blow.

Barely able to comprehend what had happened, the creature's body was split open and falling into the abyss below the bridge.

Its death was practically insignificant.
