Miles opened his mouth to protest, scrambling for an excuse. "We were just… passing by. Delivering some important…documents and uh...donuts."
Jessie wasted no time throwing him under the bus, grinning slyly. "It was mostly Miles' idea to eavesdrop! He said he heard the word 'date' and dragged me over here. I'm just an innocent bystander."
"Innocent my ass," I shot back, but I was already laughing, the sound bright and unstoppable.
They ushered me back into the office with the donut box as their peace offering, and soon the three of us were gathered around my desk, devouring the sugary treats while the morning light poured in cheerfully.
