Chapter 27 - Hollow

Dawn broke grey over Ashenfell.

No sunrise. Just darkness fading to less darkness.

Jayden woke to the sound of scraping. His eye snapped open. Red and black. Instantly alert.

Something moved outside their shelter.

He Shadow Stepped to the entrance. Silent. Blade manifested.

A creature. Humanoid. Wrong.

Skin grey and cracked. Eyes empty. Moving mechanically. Searching.

**[ANALYZING...]**

**[CORRUPTED HUMAN HOLLOW RANK]**

**[SPEED: 2.1 UNITS. POWER: 1.8 UNITS]**

**[ESSENCE: 94% CORRUPTED]**

**[STATUS: LOST]**

A Hollow. The lowest rank in Ashenfell's system.

Someone who'd been drained by corruption. Barely alive. Essence starved.

The creature's head snapped toward Jayden. Hollow eyes locked on.

It lunged.

Slow. Pathetic. Desperate.

Jayden sidestepped. The Hollow crashed into the wall. Clawed at stone.

"Please..." Its voice was broken. Cracked. "Essence... need... essence..."

Jayden's eye pulsed. Scanned deeper.

**[TIME SINCE CORRUPTION: 3 YEARS]**

**[ORIGINAL RANK: EXPERT]**

**[CURRENT MENTAL STATE: 12% FUNCTIONAL]**

This thing had been a warrior once. Expert rank. Strong.

Now it was this. A shell. Begging.

"I can't help you." Jayden's voice was quiet.

"Please... just... little..." The Hollow reached. Fingers skeletal. "Die... soon... just... little..."

Behind Jayden, the team woke. Marcus appeared first, saw the Hollow.

"What the hell is that?"

"What we might become if we stay too long." Jayden didn't take his eyes off the creature. "This place doesn't just kill you. It drains you. Slowly."

The Hollow collapsed. Weeping. No tears it had none left.

Cinna pushed forward. "We have to help "

"We can't." Elena stopped her. "Look at it. The corruption is too deep."

Jayden's eye confirmed it. 94% corrupted. Essence core destroyed. No healing could fix this.

The Hollow looked up. Recognition flickered in dead eyes.

"You... new... run... while..." It coughed. Grey blood. "Ashenfell... takes... everyone..."

Then it stopped moving.

Not dead. Just empty.

The team stood in silence.

"That's what happens here?" Marcus's voice was hollow. Fitting.

"That's what happens." Vance appeared from her scouting. "Ashenfell doesn't kill fast. It drains. Corrupts. Turns you into that."

"How long?" Zain asked.

"Depends on your strength. Hollows? Weeks. Experts? Years. Masters?" She looked at them. "Maybe a decade. If you're lucky."

"And that survivor settlement you mentioned?"

"They've found ways to slow it. Not stop it. Slow." Vance moved to the entrance. "We should go. Before more Hollows find us."

They packed quickly. Left the Hollow behind. Still breathing. Still suffering.

Cinna looked back once. Jayden caught her expression.

"We can't save everyone," he said quietly.

"Doesn't mean we stop trying."

"No. It doesn't."

The wasteland stretched endlessly.

Cracked earth. Dead trees. Essence storms on the horizon swirling masses of corrupted energy.

They walked in formation. Alert. Tense.

**[HOSTILE ENTITIES DETECTED: 23 WITHIN 2 MILES]**

Jayden's eye tracked them all. Hollows mostly. A few Wanderers slightly stronger. Still corrupted.

"How does anyone survive here?" Marcus muttered.

"They don't," a voice said.

Everyone spun. Weapons manifested.

A man stood on a boulder. Mid thirties. Scarred. One eye missing. But his essence was clean. Uncorrupted.

**[ANALYZING...]**

**[NAME: UNKNOWN]**

**[RANK: REAVER]**

**[SPEED: 34.2 UNITS. POWER: 38.7 UNITS]**

**[CORRUPTION LEVEL: 8%]**

Strong. Way stronger than them.

"Relax. If I wanted you dead, you'd be dead." The man jumped down. Landed heavily. "Name's Garrett. I track new arrivals. Make sure they don't die immediately."

"Why?" Elena asked. Ice rapier ready.

"Because Ashenfell needs fighters. Not more Hollows." Garrett spat. "You're from Nexus, yeah? Fugitives?"

"How did you "

"Everyone here is a fugitive. Or was." He circled them. Assessing. "Master rank fighters. Impressive. Nexus must really want you dead."

"They do," Jayden said.

"Good. That means you're dangerous. Dangerous is useful." Garrett stopped. "The settlement Vance told you about. It's real. But there's a test."

"What test?"

"Survival. Three days. In the Deadlands. Prove you can handle Ashenfell." He pointed west. "That direction. Five miles. There's a marker. Reach it. Return. You get in."

"And if we don't?"

"Then you become Hollows like the rest."

Zain stepped forward. "What's stopping us from just walking in?"

"The defenses. The settlement is protected. Essence barriers. The only way through is earning it." Garrett pulled out a medallion. Tossed it to Jayden. "That's your proof. Return with it intact."

Jayden caught it. Simple metal. But essence infused. Strong.

"What's the catch?"

"The Deadlands have more than Hollows. There's Corrupted Beasts. Essence storms. And..." Garrett's expression darkened. "Things that used to be human."

"Demons?" Elena asked.

"Worse. Failures." He turned to leave. "Good luck. You'll need it."

He vanished. Shadow Step at Reaver level. Gone.

The team looked at the medallion.

"Three days," Marcus said. "In hell."

"We've survived worse," Jayden replied.

"Have we?"

Honestly? He wasn't sure.

His eye pulsed. Calculated survival rates.

**[THREE DAY DEADLANDS SURVIVAL PROBABILITY: 58%]**

Coin flip odds.

"We stick together. We're careful. We survive." Jayden pocketed the medallion. "Let's move."

The Deadlands were worse than expected.

The corruption was thicker. Essence storms rolled through hourly. They had to shelter behind rocks, wait for them to pass.

Corrupted beasts prowled. Twisted things. Wolves with too many eyes. Birds with metal feathers. Snakes made of pure essence.

Each fight drained them.

Not physically. Essence wise.

Ashenfell's atmosphere pulled at their cores. Trying to corrupt them. Drain them.

**[CORRUPTION LEVEL RISING]**

**[JAYDEN: 2% → 3%]**

**[TEAM AVERAGE: 4%]**

Small increases. But constant.

"How long before we end up like that Hollow?" Cinna asked.

"Years," Jayden said. "But we won't be here that long."

He hoped.

They camped that night in a canyon. Natural shelter. Defensible.

Jayden sat watch. Stared at the sky.

No stars. Just grey clouds. Eternal.

His eye pulsed. Thinking about the flower. The purple one. Growing impossibly.

**[HYPOTHESIS: ESSENCE PURIFICATION PROPERTIES]**

**[RECOMMENDATION: RETRIEVE SAMPLE FOR ANALYSIS]**

"You're thinking about that flower."

Elena sat beside him. Her blade across her lap.

"Yeah."

"Why?"

"Because it shouldn't exist. Nothing pure survives here. But it did." Jayden looked at her. "That means something."

"Maybe it's a fluke."

"Maybe. Or maybe it's important."

She was quiet. Then: "Do you think we'll make it? Through all this?"

Jayden's eye calculated. Probabilities. Futures. Outcomes.

67% survival over thirty days.

43% chance of clearing names.

34% chance of defeating Theron.

Numbers. Cold. Brutal.

But numbers weren't everything.

"Yes," he said. "We'll make it."

"How do you know?"

"Because I've seen us fail a thousand times in my head. And we always find a way through." He touched his eye. "Omni shows me every possible future. And in every one where we stick together? We survive."

"What about the ones where we don't stick together?"

"We all die."

Silence stretched.

"Then I guess we'd better stay together," Elena said finally.

"Yeah. We better."

Dawn came grey again.

Day two in the Deadlands.

They found the marker at noon. A stone pillar. Ancient. Covered in essence runes.

"That's it?" Marcus asked.

Jayden touched the pillar. It pulsed. Recognized the medallion.

**[MARKER CONFIRMED]**

**[RETURN TO SETTLEMENT FOR ENTRY]**

"That's it. Now we go back."

"Easy enough," Zain said.

It wasn't.

On the return, they were ambushed.

Not by beasts. By people.

Ten of them. Wanderer rank. Corrupted. Eyes wild.

"Give us your essence!" one screamed. "Give us!"

They attacked. Desperate. Rabid.

The fight was brutal. Not because they were strong. Because they were desperate.

Marcus held the front. His durability absorbed attacks. Elena froze three. Zain crushed two.

Jayden's eye tracked the leader. Wanderer with an axe. Moving erratically.

**[CORRUPTION LEVEL: 67%]**

**[MENTAL STATE: 8% FUNCTIONAL]**

Barely human anymore.

The Wanderer lunged. Jayden Shadow Stepped behind. Blade to throat.

"Stand down."

"NEED ESSENCE! NEED IT!"

Jayden knocked him out. Mercy. The others surrendered.

They bound them. Left supplies. Moved on.

"They'll die out here," Cinna said.

"Probably," Jayden replied.

"And we're just leaving them?"

"We can't save everyone." His voice was hard. "Not yet."

They reached the settlement at dusk. Day three.

A massive dome. Shimmering essence barrier. Beautiful. Clean.

Garrett waited at the entrance.

"You made it. Impressive." He took the medallion. Tested it. Nodded. "Welcome to Haven. Try not to die."

The barrier parted.

Inside was life.

Actual life.

Buildings. People. Light. Clean essence.

"How..." Marcus stared.

"Essence purifiers. Barriers. Constant maintenance." Garrett led them in. "And one very powerful benefactor."

"Who?"

"You'll meet him tomorrow. Tonight, rest. You've earned it."

They were given rooms. Small. Clean. Safe.

Jayden collapsed on a bed. Real bed. First time in days.

His eye pulsed. Scanned the settlement.

**[CORRUPTION LEVEL INSIDE BARRIER: 0.3%]**

**[POPULATION: 487]**

**[AVERAGE RANK: HUNTER]**

**[SETTLEMENT LEADER: ANALYZING... ERROR. CANNOT SCAN.]**

Couldn't scan the leader. That meant they were powerful. Very powerful.

Tomorrow they'd find out who.

Jayden closed his eyes. Exhaustion taking over.

His last thought was of the flower. Purple against grey.

And somewhere in this settlement, he'd find answers.
