Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: The Truth We Were Never Told

The photograph lay on the table.

Neither Yerin nor Do-hyun moved.

For several seconds, the room was completely silent.

Do-hyun's eyes remained fixed on the picture.

His father stood across from him, saying nothing.

Yerin slowly stepped closer.

"What is that?"

Mr. Choi didn't answer immediately.

Do-hyun reached for the photograph.

He picked it up.

His expression changed.

The picture was old.

Very old.

Two men stood together in front of a building.

His father.

And Yerin's father.

They looked younger.

Much younger.

But that wasn't what caught Do-hyun's attention.

It was the date written in the corner.

His eyes narrowed.

"This was taken..."

He looked at his father.

"Years ago."

Mr. Choi nodded.

"Yes."

Do-hyun looked at the photograph again.

"What does this have to do with us?"

Mr. Hwang exchanged a glance with Mr. Choi.

Yerin noticed.

Her stomach tightened.

"Why are you both looking at each other like that?"

Still no answer.

Do-hyun's patience began to disappear.

"Father."

His voice was sharper this time.

"Why are we looking at an old photograph of you and Mr. Hwang?"

Mr. Choi finally walked toward the desk.

He rested both hands against it.

"Because there are things about your marriage that you were never told."

Yerin froze.

Do-hyun stared at him.

"What things?"

Mr. Choi took a breath.

"Your marriage was not decided recently."

Silence.

Yerin frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Mr. Hwang looked at his daughter.

"It was discussed years ago."

Yerin's face went blank.

"What?"

Do-hyun slowly lowered the photograph.

His father continued.

"Long before either of you were old enough to understand what marriage meant."

Yerin stared at her father.

"You're saying..."

She swallowed.

"...you had already planned this?"

Neither father answered.

They didn't need to.

Their silence was enough.

Yerin took a step back.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"No, that's not possible."

She looked toward her father.

"You told me the marriage discussion happened because of the families."

"It did."

"You told me it was a decision that came later."

Her father's expression tightened.

"We didn't tell you everything."

Yerin laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

"You didn't tell me anything."

Do-hyun looked at his father.

His jaw tightened.

"So all those conversations..."

He paused.

"The engagement."

Another pause.

"The wedding."

His eyes hardened.

"All of it?"

Mr. Choi looked at him.

"Yes."

Do-hyun's expression became colder.

"You planned all of it?"

His father remained silent.

Do-hyun laughed bitterly.

"Unbelievable."

Yerin looked at him.

He looked just as shocked as she felt.

For the first time, she realized something.

He hadn't known either.

Do-hyun placed the photograph back on the desk.

His voice was low.

"So when you told me I had no choice..."

His father looked at him.

"You already knew."

"Do-hyun—"

"No."

He shook his head.

"Answer me."

His father said nothing.

Do-hyun stepped closer.

"You knew this marriage was going to happen."

"We believed it was necessary."

"Necessary?"

Do-hyun's laugh was bitter.

"You called it necessary?"

His father remained composed.

"We had our reasons."

"Reasons?"

Do-hyun's eyes flashed.

"You watched me fight this."

His voice rose.

"You watched me tell you I didn't want this marriage."

Yerin lowered her eyes.

Every memory came rushing back.

The arguments.

The pressure.

The nights she had cried.

The days she had tried to find a way out.

And her father had stood there every time.

Calm.

Certain.

As if the outcome had already been decided.

Yerin looked at him.

"You knew."

Her father looked at her.

"You knew I was going to marry him."

He didn't deny it.

Yerin's eyes filled with tears.

"Then why did you let me believe I had a choice?"

The question hung in the room.

Her father's expression softened.

"Yerin..."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You don't get to say my name like everything is okay."

Her voice trembled.

"You watched me fight."

She wiped quickly beneath her eye.

"You watched me argue with you."

Another tear escaped.

"You watched me think my entire future was being taken away from me."

Her voice broke.

"And all along..."

She looked at him.

"...you had already decided how it would end."

Her father lowered his eyes.

Yerin stared at him.

That silence hurt more than any explanation.

Do-hyun looked between both fathers.

"So this wasn't just about our families."

Mr. Choi didn't answer.

Do-hyun stepped closer.

"What happened?"

Mr. Hwang finally spoke.

"Something happened years ago."

"What?"

"Something involving both families."

Do-hyun's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of something?"

Mr. Hwang hesitated.

"We can't tell you everything yet."

Do-hyun stared at him.

"You can't tell us?"

His voice became dangerously calm.

"You forced us into a marriage because of something that happened before we were even old enough to understand it..."

He pointed toward the photograph.

"And now you're telling us you still won't tell us what it is?"

Mr. Choi stepped forward.

"We were trying to protect you."

Do-hyun immediately looked at him.

"No."

The word came quietly.

Firmly.

"You weren't protecting us."

He glanced at Yerin.

Then back at his father.

"You were protecting yourselves, your buisness."

The room fell silent.

Mr. Choi's expression hardened.

"Watch your words."

"Why?"

Do-hyun's eyes burned with anger.

"Because they're true?"

Yerin looked at him.

She had never seen him speak to his father like this.

Not even during their worst arguments.

Do-hyun continued.

"You didn't ask me."

He looked at Yerin.

"You didn't ask her."

His voice cracked slightly.

"You just decided."

Mr. Hwang finally sat down.

His shoulders seemed heavier now.

"There was an agreement."

Yerin looked at him.

"What agreement?"

"Between the two families."

"When?"

"Years ago."

"About what?"

He hesitated.

"About the future."

Yerin's face tightened.

"What does that even mean?"

Mr. Hwang looked toward Mr. Choi.

The two men exchanged another silent glance.

Do-hyun noticed.

"Stop doing that."

Both fathers looked at him.

"Stop looking at each other like you have some secret conversation we're not part of."

His voice was cold.

"We're the ones whose lives you changed."

He pointed toward himself.

"Me."

Then toward Yerin.

"Her."

"And apparently..."

He laughed bitterly.

"...we're the last people to know why."

Yerin's tears finally fell.

She quickly turned away.

Do-hyun noticed.

His anger didn't disappear.

But his expression softened.

He stepped closer to her.

Not touching her.

Just standing beside her.

For once...

Neither of them was fighting each other.

They were fighting the same thing.

The truth.

Mr. Choi opened another drawer.

He took out a second document.

He placed it beside the photograph.

Yerin looked down.

There were signatures.

Dates.

Family names.

Her eyes widened.

"What's that?"

Mr. Choi said quietly,

"The original agreement."

Do-hyun picked it up.

He scanned the first page.

His face slowly changed.

"This..."

He looked at his father.

"This was signed before we even met."

Mr. Choi nodded.

Yerin reached for the document.

Her hands shook as she read it.

She saw both family names.

She saw the dates.

And then...

She saw something that made her stop breathing.

Her eyes moved slowly across the page.

At the bottom...

There was a clause.

A marriage arrangement.

Between the children of both families.

Yerin stared at it.

"How could you..."

Her voice disappeared.

Do-hyun took the document from her.

He read the same line.

His jaw tightened.

"All these years..."

He looked at his father.

"You already knew I'd marry her."

Mr. Choi didn't respond.

Do-hyun's eyes became cold.

"Did you even care who I wanted?"

His father looked away.

That was enough.

Do-hyun laughed quietly.

A broken, bitter laugh.

"Right."

Yerin looked toward her father.

"Did Mom know?"

Mr. Hwang hesitated.

Yerin's heart sank.

"Grandma?"

Another silence.

Her eyes filled again.

"Who knew?"

Her father finally answered.

"Some members of the family."

Yerin shook her head.

"So everyone knew except us."

"No."

Her father tried to explain.

"Not everyone."

"But enough people did."

She looked at him.

"Enough people knew what was going to happen to me."

Her voice trembled.

"And nobody thought I deserved to know?"

Do-hyun looked down at the document.

Then he suddenly noticed something.

A date.

He traced it with his finger.

"Why was the wedding rushed?"

Neither father answered.

Do-hyun looked up.

"The engagement."

His eyes moved between them.

"The wedding."

He suddenly understood.

"You weren't rushing because of Father's trip."

Yerin looked at him.

"What?"

Do-hyun turned toward their fathers.

"You told us there wasn't enough time because of work."

His father remained silent.

"But that wasn't the real reason."

Yerin's face went pale.

"Then why?"

Mr. Hwang finally spoke.

"Because the agreement had to be completed."

Yerin stared at him.

"Completed?"

He nodded.

"The marriage had to happen."

"Why?"

Silence.

"Why?"

Yerin's voice rose.

"Why did it have to happen?"

Mr. Hwang looked at her.

"We're not ready to tell you that yet."

Do-hyun's expression became completely still.

"Then we're done."

He put the document down.

"We're not staying here to listen to another half-truth."

He reached for Yerin's hand.

She looked at him.

For a second, she hesitated.

Then she let him take it.

They walked toward the door.

Neither father stopped them.

Just before Do-hyun opened it...

His father spoke.

"Do-hyun."

He stopped.

"Whatever you think of us..."

Do-hyun didn't turn around.

"...there is a reason we did this."

Do-hyun's hand tightened around Yerin's.

His voice was quiet.

"Then you should have trusted us enough to tell us."

He opened the door.

And they walked out.

Neither spoke.

They walked upstairs slowly.

Yerin's mind was racing.

Everything she had believed about the past few months felt different now.

The engagement.

The wedding.

The pressure.

All of it.

She stopped halfway up the stairs.

"Do-hyun."

He turned.

"What?"

She looked at him.

"Did you know?"

He immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"No."

Yerin nodded.

Her eyes dropped.

"I believe you."

He looked at her.

She took a shaky breath.

"I just..."

She struggled to finish.

"I don't know what to believe anymore."

Do-hyun was quiet.

Then he said,

"Neither do I."

For a moment, they stood there.

Then he looked at their joined hands.

He slowly released hers.

"I'm sorry."

Yerin frowned.

"For what?"

"For something I didn't even know I was part of."

She shook her head.

"It's not your fault."

He looked at her.

"Still."

Yerin gave him a faint smile.

"We'll find out."

Do-hyun nodded.

"Together?"

She looked at him.

"Together."

Later that night, Yerin returned to their room.

Do-hyun had stayed downstairs.

She changed into her nightsuit and walked toward the desk.

Then stopped.

Something was lying there.

An envelope.

Her name was written across it.

Hwang Yerin.

She frowned.

She hadn't seen it earlier.

Slowly, she picked it up.

There was no sender.

She opened it.

A photograph slipped out.

It landed on the desk.

Yerin picked it up.

Her heart stopped.

It was a photograph of her.

And Do-hyun.

Leaving the wedding venue.

Today.

Her hands began to tremble.

Someone had taken this photograph.

Today.

Someone had been watching them.

She turned it over.

There were words written on the back.

Her eyes widened.

Now that you're married, the real story begins.

Yerin's breathing became shallow.

Her phone suddenly rang.

She froze.

The screen displayed:

UNKNOWN NUMBER

She stared at it.

The phone continued ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Finally...

She answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then a voice.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"Congratulations, Mrs. Choi."

Yerin's blood ran cold.

"Who is this?"

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

"You really don't know, do you?"

Yerin gripped the edge of the desk.

"Know what?"

The voice became quieter.

"The reason your fathers needed you married."

Yerin stopped breathing.

"What?"

The line went silent for a moment.

Then the voice said:

"Ask them what happened all those years ago."

A pause.

"Ask them what they did."

Yerin's eyes widened.

Before she could respond...

The call ended.

She stared at the screen.

Her heart was pounding.

Then she slowly looked toward the closed bedroom door.

Do-hyun was somewhere downstairs.

Her eyes returned to the photograph.

The wedding.

The marriage.

The agreement.

The secret.

None of it had been a coincidence.

And now someone else knew.

Someone who had been watching them.

Someone who knew the truth their fathers were hiding.

Yerin whispered to herself,

"What did you do?"

The lights outside the window flickered.

And somewhere beyond the mansion...

A car slowly disappeared into the darkness.
