Chapter 12 - THE SILVER BELL SECRET

Chapter 12 – The Silver Bell Secret

The morning sunlight glinted off the snow, making the town look like it had been dusted with powdered sugar. Clara pulled her scarf tighter and held the small silver bell in her gloved hands. It was delicate, almost impossibly so, but there was something… alive about it, like it knew her thoughts before she spoke them.

Ethan appeared at her side, brushing snow from his coat. "You found it last night?" he asked, voice soft, a teasing curve at the corner of his lips.

Clara nodded. "I couldn't stop thinking about it. It… feels like it's waiting for something."

Ethan knelt down, examining the bell. "Or someone," he murmured, his eyes catching hers for a fleeting second. Clara felt a spark in her chest, quick and warm.

"Okay, let's test it," she said, unable to hide her excitement. "I'll make a small wish first."

She held the bell between her palms. "I wish… for a perfect cup of hot chocolate," she whispered.

Ethan smirked. "That's it? Not a wish to win the lottery or something?"

Clara rolled her eyes, but the moment she tapped the bell lightly, a steaming mug appeared in front of her, chocolate scent curling in the crisp air. She gasped. "It… it actually worked!"

Ethan laughed, shaking his head. "Okay, my turn." He crouched down, thinking of May, who had been building snow angels a few meters away. "I wish for a snowball fight with May."

The moment the bell rang, fluffy snow swirled into the air, forming perfect soft snowballs in their hands. May squealed in delight as Ethan and Clara launched the first flurry, snow dusting their coats and hair.

Clara dodged a snowball Ethan threw at her, laughing. Her heart raced—not just from the cold or the snow, but from being near him. Ethan caught her hand mid-throw, holding it with an ease that made her pulse quicken.

"You're cheating," she said, breathless.

"Am I?" Ethan leaned a little closer, face near hers, snowflakes landing on his lashes. "Or are you just distracted?"

Clara's cheeks heated. She wanted to pull away, but her hands were still in his, frozen in that brief, electric contact. Ethan's eyes flicked to hers, a silent question in the way he tilted his head.

Before she could answer, May came running toward them, laughing and shouting. "Ethan! Clara! You two are cheating in the snowball fight!"

Clara stumbled back, hiding a giggle, and Ethan's lips curved in a smirk. He didn't release her hand entirely, just enough to let their fingers brush.

"Step by step," he murmured, echoing a promise she couldn't forget.

Clara shook her head, both embarrassed and exhilarated. "Step by step," she repeated, heart racing in a way that had nothing to do with snow.

As they returned inside, brushing off snow, the silver bell lay on the counter, glinting in the sunlight. It was small, but its presence made the house feel magical.

"Do you think it… only works with pure wishes?" Clara asked softly, glancing at Ethan.

Ethan shrugged, leaning closer to whisper, "Maybe it's just trying to remind us that a little magic comes from intention… and heart."

Clara's breath hitched slightly as his words lingered, a warmth spreading through her chest. Something told her this small silver bell was only the beginning.

And as the snow continued to fall gently outside, the quiet magic of possibility filled the room, wrapping them in a Christmas that promised laughter, mischief, and maybe… love.
