Chapter 18 - Suspicion, Jealousy, and Brewing War

The Hawaiian sun was already high by the time the employees gathered at the beachside conference hall for the morning briefing. Julia kept her head low, her hair down, trying to appear invisible.

But she could feel eyes on her.Two pairs, specifically.

Veronica's.And Alan's.

And somewhere behind them—Kai's.

Julia swallowed hard. Her body still remembered the way Alan had held her in the early hours of dawn. The warmth of his hand on her waist. The soft kiss near her lips. His whisper—

This isn't over.

She wasn't prepared to face him.Or Veronica.

Especially not both at once.

"Julia."Her name came sharp, slicing the air.

She lifted her head to find Veronica standing too close—arms crossed, red-lipped smile tight and venomous.

"You look tired," Veronica said sweetly. "Didn't sleep well?"

Julia's stomach dropped.She suspects something.

"No," Julia forced a neutral tone. "Just jet lag."

"Hmm." Veronica's gaze flicked down, scanning her robe-wrinkled shirt and slightly flushed neck. "Strange. Alan didn't look jet lagged at all."

Julia's heart skipped. She fought to keep her face still.

Before Veronica could lean in with more veiled daggers, a warm, familiar presence approached from behind.

Kai.

"Julia." His voice was a calm anchor. "You weren't at breakfast. Everything alright?"

Veronica's eyebrow arched sharply."Oh look. Your… admirer."

Kai ignored her pointed tone.He stepped closer to Julia, gently brushing a strand of hair from her eyes.

"You look pale. Did something happen?"

Something definitely happened.Just not the kind Julia could ever admit.

"I'm fine," she whispered.

Kai's eyes lingered on her too long—steady, protective, quietly intense.

Veronica watched the interaction with rising fury.

"So that's why you didn't come back to your room last night." Veronica's smile sharpened. "You were with him."

Julia froze.

Kai's expression shifted—brows lifting, a flicker of amusement, or maybe curiosity."No," he said calmly. "We just met this morning."

Veronica clicked her tongue. "Then where did you sleep, Julia?"

The air thickened.

Julia forced a breath."I fell asleep in one of the meeting lounges. You can ask the housekeeping staff."

Veronica's eyes narrowed.She didn't believe a word.

A cold, commanding voice cut through the air.

"Veronica."

They all turned.

Alan stood behind them, crisp suit slightly messy from rushing. His expression was unreadable—but his eyes locked onto Julia instantly, tracing—checking—memorizing.

Veronica immediately softened."Alan, I was just asking Julia why she didn't show up last—"

"I didn't ask," he cut her off.

Julia's breath hitched.

Kai stepped forward, positioning himself slightly between Julia and Alan.

A silent challenge.

Alan's jaw tightened.

"Kai." His tone was ice. "Don't you have a department briefing to run?"

"Starts in ten minutes," Kai replied smoothly. "And Julia is under my audit division this week. So she'll be with me."

"She won't be," Alan said flatly.

Kai's smile didn't reach his eyes."Oh? You're changing departmental assignments personally now?"

Julia's pulse thundered.

Veronica looked delighted by the clash—jealousy briefly replaced by the thrill of drama.

"Gentlemen," she purred. "If you're fighting over the audit schedule, maybe we should—"

"We're not fighting over a schedule," Kai said, eyes still on Alan.

Alan took a step forward, so close that Kai had to tilt his head slightly to meet his height.

"Stay away from her," Alan said quietly. "You don't know what you're walking into."

Kai's expression sharpened."Then maybe you should treat her better."

Julia felt her knees weaken.

The two men stared each other down—CEO and elite auditor, power meeting power.A silent war.

Over her.

Veronica clenched her fists, nails digging into her palms.

She turned on Julia with a whisper sharp enough to cut skin.

"What exactly did you do?" she hissed. "Men don't act like this over nothing."

Julia's voice trembled."I didn't do anything."

But the truth echoed inside her like a sin.

Last night.Alan's lips.Alan's hands.Alan's heart is beating against hers.

And now this—A battlefield forming around her, fueled by jealousy she never asked for.

Kai finally stepped back, nodding to Julia."Meet me after the breakout session, okay? We need to talk."

Julia nodded.

Alan's eyes darkened.

Kai left, but the tension stayed—wrapped tight around them like a collar.

Veronica's patience finally snapped.

"Alan," she said through gritted teeth, "I need to speak to you. Alone."

"Later."

"Now."

He didn't look at her.His eyes were on Julia again—soft, conflicted, possessive.

Julia stepped back instinctively.

"You should go," she whispered.

His jaw clenched. He hated that distance.

"Julia—"

"Please."

For a moment, he almost reached for her.His fingers twitched.

But he stopped.

Instead, he turned to Veronica, voice low, dangerous.

"Make it quick."

Veronica's eyes flooded with anger and pain as they walked away.

Julia stood alone, heart rattling against her ribs.

She had no idea how to survive today.

Not Veronica's fury.Not Kai's questions.Not Alan's eyes.

Not the consequences of last night.

For the first time, she realized—

This trip might destroy everything.

Or change everything.
