Chapter 187 - Chapter 187: Saving Jiang Nannan’s Mother

Chapter 187: Saving Jiang Nannan's Mother

"Nannan-jie, what exactly is going on? Can you tell me the details?" Ye Chen asked anxiously, pushing aside any distracting thoughts. His concern was focused solely on Jiang Nannan's mother.

Hearing that, Jiang Nannan felt a twinge of guilt. She quickly steadied herself, brushing away the stray thoughts that had crept into her mind, and began to recount the contents of the letter she had received.

Ye Chen listened carefully and soon grasped the situation.

Jiang Nannan had been born into an ordinary rural family. Her father had passed away early, leaving her and her mother to depend on each other.

When she was six years old, she awakened her martial soul. Because her innate soul power was at level seven, she was admitted—tuition-free—to a primary soul master academy in the city.

Still, Jiang Nannan worked hard to support herself, refusing to burden her mother.

Her efforts paid off. At the age of twelve, she was accepted into Shrek Academy.

After enrolling, she regularly sent her mother money, helping her move into a small home in the city. Her mother had also found a job of her own.

But her mother, unwilling to worry her daughter, had overworked herself for years—far beyond what her frail body could handle.

Although she possessed a rabbit-type martial soul, she had never awakened any soul power. She was an ordinary person—and therefore lacked the physical resilience of a soul master. Eventually, exhaustion drove her body past its limits.

"The doctor said my mom… might not make it past the year…" Jiang Nannan's voice broke with a sob.

"Nannan-jie, don't lose hope," Ye Chen said, holding her gently as he reassured her. "That doctor was a common villager. My medical skills might even surpass his. And if necessary, we can seek help from a healing-type soul master at the academy. Your mother will be fine."

His tone was firm and soothing.

"Mhm… I hope so… My mother's the only family I have left in this world…" Nannan's voice trembled softly, her sobs quieting. She seemed comforted—perhaps because she truly believed in Ye Chen's words.

Ye Chen wasn't comforting her blindly. His instincts told him he was right.

While his medical prowess wasn't at a master's level, he'd studied enough to infer the cause from her brief description.

It was organ failure induced by years of overexertion—a gradual collapse from within, not an external wound.

Her organs were aging prematurely, deteriorating faster and faster. At this rate, they would soon fail completely, claiming her life.

Even the most powerful healing soul masters could only delay such a decline. None could reverse it.

If Jiang Nannan's mother were a soul master, things would be different. Recovery through rest and soul power regulation would have been possible. But as an ordinary human with no innate soul power, once her organs began failing, the process was irreversible.

Unless… she consumed a heavenly-grade medicine.

Something like the Xuanming Pill of the Xuanming Sect.

Or better yet—an immortal herb.

Ye Chen, however, wouldn't need any of those. He had something far more effective—his "Seed of Life."

A single Seed of Life could not only heal wounds but also restore the body's vitality, rejuvenating exhausted organs.

In certain aspects, its effects far surpassed that of the Xuanming Pill—so long as Ye Chen was willing to sacrifice a few years of his own lifespan.

A small price, given how much life force he now possessed.

Still, all of this was his hypothesis. He would need to see Jiang Nannan's mother in person before confirming anything.

Guided by Jiang Nannan, Ye Chen flew swiftly to a small remote town within the Heavenly Soul Empire called Xishi Town.

It was a quiet place, old yet peaceful.

They soon arrived at a modest courtyard near the main street.

The small house was simple but tidy—clearly the home of people who worked hard to live decently.

Jiang Nannan pushed open the gate. The yard was silent save for the faint scent of herbs drifting from the main room.

"Mom?"

Her voice trembled as she stepped inside.

Lying in bed within the dimly lit room was a thin woman with streaks of white in her hair. Her face was pale and sallow, her breath shallow and strained.

It was Jiang Nannan's mother—Ye Yunxi.

Though only thirty-two, her weary body made her look closer to forty. Years of toil had ravaged her youth.

Her condition was dire. Without immediate treatment, she wouldn't last much longer.

At the sound of footsteps, Ye Yunxi opened her murky eyes. When she saw Jiang Nannan, light returned to them for the briefest moment.

"Nannan… why are you home?"

Her voice was faint, her weary smile breaking Ye Chen's heart.

"Mom!"

Jiang Nannan fell beside her, clutching her mother's frail hand as tears streamed down her face once more.

Ye Yunxi's gaze shifted toward Ye Chen, curiosity flickering weakly in her tired eyes.

"Mom, this is Ye Chen—my… my classmate. He's also a physician. He came with me to see you."

Ye Chen nodded. "Hello, Auntie. Please, let me examine you." He sat beside her bed and gently took her wrist, beginning to measure her pulse.

"Good child… Thank you for your trouble…" Ye Yunxi whispered softly, gratitude and shame mingling in her expression. She blamed herself for her daughter's burdens, even now.

A month ago, she could still walk on her own. She hadn't expected her body to deteriorate this quickly.

As Ye Chen read her pulse, his brows tightened slightly.

It was as he'd feared—her vitality was almost gone. Her organs were failing one by one; even the best healers of his past life would have been helpless.

He couldn't help but marvel grimly. "She really fought too hard…"

"Mom, you're finally home."

A voice called from the doorway.

Ye Chen and Jiang Nannan turned around to see two people entering—a middle-aged woman and an elderly man with a small goatee.

The woman rushed over, eyes filled with concern.

The elderly man carried a wooden medical case in hand. His calm, sharp gaze and steady movement revealed that he was clearly a local physician.
