Chapter 107 - Chapter 107

The corridors of Hogwarts always had a way of making a person feel small.

Even for Harry — who had walked through Asgard's golden halls, the icy plains of Jotunheim, and the ancient places in the realms most wizards didn't even know existed — Hogwarts still carried a peculiar gravity. The castle was alive in its own quiet way. The staircases shifted moods like temperamental nobles, portraits whispered secrets, and somewhere distant, armor suits occasionally muttered about "the old days."

Harry had been here before, yes.

But never like this.

The previous visits had all been secretive — late-night explorations with Hermione and Draco guiding him confidently through hidden corridors, unused classrooms, and forgotten passages. They knew Hogwarts like second nature. Hermione knew every historical corner; Draco knew every shortcut worth taking.

Now he walked openly.

Professor Filius Flitwick hurried ahead of him, robes swishing with surprising speed for someone so short. The Charms professor occasionally glanced back with a cheerful smile, clearly pleased to be entrusted with Harry's orientation.

"This way, Mr. Potter," Flitwick said brightly, turning yet another corner. "Hogwarts can be rather confusing at first — and second — and sometimes third."

Harry smiled faintly.

"I noticed."

They passed a group of Ravenclaw students who froze mid-conversation upon spotting him. One girl nearly dropped her books.

Flitwick noticed.

"Yes, yes," he said kindly, ushering Harry forward. "You'll get used to the attention. Eventually."

"I'm hoping they get used to me first," Harry replied.

The professor chuckled.

They climbed a short staircase that rotated halfway up — Flitwick paused patiently until it settled — then continued down a quieter corridor. This wing of the castle seemed less trafficked. The torches burned softer here, and the portraits were older, more contemplative.

Finally, Flitwick stopped before a plain wooden door.

"This," Flitwick announced, slightly out of breath but smiling proudly, "will be your room for the duration of your stay."

Harry studied it.

It felt… intentionally modest.

"The password," Flitwick added, lowering his voice conspiratorially, "is 'Hippogriff.'"

He spoke it clearly.

The door clicked and opened inward.

Flitwick gestured politely.

"After you, Mr. Potter."

Harry stepped inside.

The room was small.

A neatly made bed against the wall.

A modest wooden desk with a lamp.

A wardrobe just large enough for robes and a few personal items.

A single window overlooking part of the castle grounds.

No extravagance.

No unnecessary magic.

Just functional comfort.

Harry exhaled softly.

"It's perfect."

Flitwick looked relieved.

"I'm glad you think so. Professor McGonagall worried it might be too… understated, given your… background."

Harry shook his head.

"I've slept in tents, manors, forges, and once in a dragon reserve observation tower. This is luxury compared to some of those."

Flitwick laughed warmly.

"Well then, I shall leave you to settle in. If you need anything, any professor will assist you. And remember — you may attend any classes you wish."

"I appreciate it, Professor."

Flitwick paused at the door.

"And Mr. Potter?"

"Yes?"

"We're very glad you're here."

Then he left.

The door closed softly behind him.

Harry placed his small travel case on the desk and sat on the edge of the bed.

For a long moment, he simply looked around.

This wasn't Asgard.

Not Highland Manor.

Not any battlefield or council chamber.

Just Hogwarts.

A school.

Harry made a deliberate decision on his first full day at Hogwarts — he would not attend any classes. It wasn't laziness, nor arrogance.

He had come here with a purpose, one he could not fully share even with Hermione or Draco, and rushing into normal student routines would only slow him down. Instead, he chose the one place where information gathered quietly and answers often hid between dusty pages — the Hogwarts Library.

The moment he stepped inside, he understood why Hermione had spoken about it with such reverence. The vast hall stretched farther than it seemed possible from outside, shelves rising high enough that ladders had been permanently affixed to reach upper tiers. Ancient magical lamps floated near the ceiling, casting a warm golden glow that made the polished wood gleam softly. The faint smell of parchment, ink, and old magic hung in the air — comforting, scholarly, timeless.

Harry couldn't help comparing it to the grand archives of Asgard. Compared to that colossal repository of cosmic history, Hogwarts' library was small. Yet for Midgard it was extraordinary.

Thousands upon thousands of books, some centuries old, some clearly enchanted to preserve fragile pages, lined the shelves. There were histories, spell compendiums, creature studies, potion manuals, and obscure magical philosophies that even Harry had never encountered before.

Because of his unusual status at Hogwarts, he had been granted privileges most students would only dream of. Even the Restricted Section was open to him without question. Madam Pince had merely given him a stern look, then nodded as if she had been expecting him.

"Do be careful with the older volumes, Mr. Potter," she said quietly. "Some of them are older than this castle."

Harry gave her a polite smile. "I'll treat them better than I treat myself."

She actually smirked at that before returning to her desk.

He spent hours moving from shelf to shelf, pulling out whatever caught his interest. Books about ancient magical bloodlines. Forgotten defensive enchantments. Historical accounts of dark magical creatures. Anything even remotely connected to hidden chambers, ancient founders, or magical beasts received special attention. His mind constantly circled back to one topic — the Chamber of Secrets and the mysterious creature said to dwell within it.

If such a creature existed, Harry wanted to understand it before anyone else did. Partly out of curiosity. Partly out of caution. And, if he was honest with himself, partly because he had always been fascinated by magical beasts.

The Cerberus incident still lingered in his mind. He had almost gained a magnificent magical companion once. Perhaps this time would be different.

As the day progressed, however, he noticed something he had expected but still found mildly irritating. Students began drifting into the library not to read — but to watch him.

Whispers followed him between shelves.

"That's him… Harry Potter."

"They said he's living here now."

"Look at his eyes… they're beautiful."

Harry kept his expression neutral. Fame had never been something he enjoyed, and recently it had become even more exhausting. Still, he tolerated it. Curiosity was natural, especially among teenagers raised on stories about him.

He simply buried himself deeper into books.

By late afternoon, he sensed familiar magical signatures approaching. He didn't need to look up to know who it was. Hermione's purposeful footsteps were unmistakable, while Draco's softer but confident stride followed closely behind.

They stopped at his table.

Hermione looked ready to explode with questions. Draco folded his arms, his expression hovering somewhere between relief and annoyance.

Harry didn't even raise his head from the book.

"Library rules," he murmured quietly. "No talking."

Hermione blinked, then flushed slightly as Madam Pince glanced sharply in their direction. Draco gave a quiet huff but remained silent.

They lingered a moment longer before reluctantly leaving.

Harry felt a brief stab of guilt as he watched them go from the corner of his eye. They deserved answers. They deserved honesty. But he also knew the harsh reality — he would only be at Hogwarts temporarily. At the end of the term, he would return to Asgard, to Midgard politics, to the Aether crisis, to responsibilities far beyond school life.

Hermione and Draco, however, would remain here for years. They needed stability, normalcy, and good reputations within the wizarding world. Association with whatever trouble Harry might stir up could damage their futures.

And trouble, he suspected, was inevitable.

The Chamber of Secrets was not a myth. Students were already being petrified. Fear was spreading. Someone — or something — was moving in the shadows of Hogwarts.

Harry intended to find it.

Even if that meant risking his own reputation.

Even if people ended up misunderstanding him.

Even if, by the end of this term, he left Hogwarts not as the celebrated "Boy Who Lived" — but as something far more controversial.

As evening settled outside the tall windows, Harry finally closed the last book of the day. His eyes ached slightly, his weakened magical reserves reminding him that he was no longer the near-immortal powerhouse he had once been.

Strangely, that limitation felt grounding.

He packed the books neatly, nodding to Madam Pince as he left, and began the walk back toward his small assigned room. The corridors of Hogwarts still felt unfamiliar when navigated alone. Without Hermione or Draco guiding him through shortcuts and hidden passages, the castle seemed larger, more labyrinthine.

But that was fine.

Learning the castle on his own was part of the mission.

Because somewhere within these ancient walls, a monster moved.

And Harry intended to find it before anyone else did.

Harry had barely fallen asleep when an aggressive knocking shattered the quiet of the early morning. At first, he tried to ignore it, pulling the blanket over his head and hoping whoever it was would eventually give up. Unfortunately, the knocking only grew louder, more insistent, almost rhythmic in its determination.

With a groan, Harry forced himself upright. The sky outside his window was still dim — far too early for any reasonable person to be awake. Whoever stood outside clearly had no regard for sleep or basic human decency.

The knocking continued.

"All right, all right," he muttered, dragging himself out of bed. "I'm coming."

He shuffled to the door, hair disheveled, eyes half-closed, and yanked it open — only to immediately regret it.

Hermione stood there with arms crossed, expression stormy enough to rival a thundercloud. Beside her, Draco leaned casually against the doorframe, though his narrowed eyes made it clear he was just as irritated.

Before Harry could even speak, both of them pushed past him into the room.

"Harry, what are you doing here?" Hermione demanded.

"And why," Draco added sharply, "have you been avoiding us?"

Harry shut the door slowly, still waking up, then rubbed his face.

"I wasn't avoiding anyone," he said, voice rough from sleep. "I was studying. That's kind of why people come to school, you know."

Hermione was unconvinced.

"Studying?" she repeated. "You disappeared into the library yesterday and didn't even come out to eat. That's not normal, even for you."

Harry shrugged lightly.

"I'm only staying here a short while. I thought I should make the most of the library. It's… impressive, at least by Midgard standards."

Hermione's eyes narrowed dangerously.

"That still doesn't answer the real question."

Harry hesitated.

"Which is?"

"Why," she said slowly, emphasizing every word, "are you here?"

Draco folded his arms now, gaze piercing.

"Yes, Potter. Last time we suggested Hogwarts, you told us — and I quote — that you already knew more magic than most professors. And when Hermione praised the library, you practically laughed and said Asgard's libraries make this place look tiny."

Hermione nodded sharply.

"So again," she said, "why are you here?"

Harry exhaled quietly. There was no graceful way around it. Hermione's questioning skills could rival any Auror's interrogation, and Draco's instincts were annoyingly sharp.

He tried once more anyway.

"I told you… studying."

Hermione's expression turned downright murderous.

"Harry James Potter."

All right. That approach clearly wasn't working.

"I wanted to make sure you two were safe."

That part, at least, was completely true.

Draco's expression softened slightly, though suspicion remained.

"And that's all?" he asked.

Hermione, however, wasn't satisfied.

"Harry," she said, voice calmer now but far more serious, "I know you. That's not the whole story."

Silence stretched for a moment.

Harry considered lying. It would be easier. But these two knew him too well, and frankly, they deserved honesty — at least partial honesty.

"There is… another reason," he admitted.

Draco sighed dramatically.

"Of course there is."

Harry leaned back against the wall.

"This creature… it doesn't technically belong to Hogwarts, right? Not like Fluffy."

Hermione frowned.

"Yes… Salazar Slytherin supposedly left it here. Why?"

Harry hesitated only a second before saying it plainly.

"If I find it first, I might be able to take it home."

Silence.

Heavy, disbelieving silence.

Hermione stared at him as if trying to decide whether he was joking. Draco, meanwhile, looked like he might actually bang his head against the nearest wall.

"It is bad," Hermione said, though there was reluctant amusement creeping into her voice now. "Honestly, Harry, sometimes you think like Hagrid."

Harry brightened slightly.

"I take that as a compliment."

Draco groaned loudly.

"Merlin save us. He's proud of it."

Hermione shook her head, though she was smiling faintly now.

"You realise," she said, "that this 'monster' is currently petrifying students?"

"Yes," Harry replied seriously. "Which is why I need to find it before someone panics and kills it."

That sobered both of them immediately.

Draco studied Harry carefully.

"You're serious."

"Completely."

Hermione sighed deeply, the fight draining out of her.

"Come on," she said. "Breakfast. And then we start researching properly. If there really is a monster, we should understand it first."

Draco nodded.

"And preferably before Potter tries to adopt it."
