Chapter 106: The Key - Part 2

Steve

I touched the key mechanism. Dimensional energy exploded into me.

Not metaphorical pain. Actual physical sensation of reality tearing through my consciousness. The bridge-connection recognized the energy, reached for it, tried to process it.

AGONY.

My corruption scars burned white-hot. The Mind Flayer's voice roared through the link: "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"

"Closing your doorway." I grabbed the key, began pulling it backward through the sequence. "Sending you home."

The gate fought me. Reality fought me. The dimensional energy tried to burn out my neural pathways like it had the Soviet operator.

But I wasn't normal human. Not anymore.

Pain Heal activated automatically—treating the dimensional backlash as damage to absorb and process. Fight Master kept my body functioning through impossible trauma. The bridge-connection distributed the load across pathways already corrupted.

I was built for this. Four years of preparation,

Hopper

Steve's vitals on Bob's monitors went critical. Heart rate spiking, brain activity off the charts, corruption readings maxing out.

"He's dying!" Bob reported. "Neural activity is—I don't even know how to describe this!"

"Can he complete the sequence?" I demanded.

"Unknown. He's experiencing dimensional feedback that should have killed him already. Somehow he's processing it, but—"

Dustin burst through the surface entrance, Robin and Erica behind him. "Steve took the operator role! He's closing the gate manually!"

"I know! His vitals are—"

"He said he might survive because of his corruption. Is he?"

Bob stared at the readings. "I... don't know. He's not dying. But he's not stable either. He's... changing."

Steve

Key position three. The gate shrunk from eight feet to six. Progress, but excruciating.

Dimensional energy poured through me. The Backpack activated involuntarily, draining its massive 162% charge to buffer the overflow. My abilities worked in impossible synergy—Pain Heal absorbing backlash, Fight Master maintaining function, Backpack acting as dimensional capacitor.

I wasn't just surviving. I was weaponizing my corruption.

"IMPOSSIBLE," the Mind Flayer raged. "YOU SHOULD BE DEAD. WHAT ARE YOU?"

"Someone who refuses to quit." Position four. Gate shrinking to four feet. "Someone who prepared for every contingency."

"YOU'RE NOT HUMAN ANYMORE. YOU'VE BECOME SOMETHING ELSE."

"Yeah. Your worst nightmare. A bridge you can't control."

Dustin

Through Bob's monitors, we watched Steve's readings spiral into impossible territory. The Dimensional Backpack was draining—162%, 140%, 120%, dropping fast as it absorbed excess energy.

"He's using the Backpack as buffer!" I realized. "Converting dimensional energy into stored charge, then bleeding it off!"

"That shouldn't work—"

"It shouldn't. But Steve doesn't care about shouldn't. He cares about survival." I watched the readings. "Come on, Steve. Just a little longer."

Steve

Position five. Gate shrinking to two feet. Almost there.

My consciousness fragmented across dimensions. I existed simultaneously in the gate chamber, the Upside Down, somewhere between. The Mind Flayer's vast presence pressed against my mind.

"YOU SURVIVED TWICE. ONCE CLOSING MY GATE. ONCE TAKING THIS ROLE. WHAT ARE YOU, TRAVELER?"

"Someone who saves people. That's all. That's enough."

Final position. The key locked into place with mechanical click.

The gate collapsed. From two feet to one, to inches, to nothing. Reality sealed itself, dimensional tear closing completely.

The energy feedback hit me like nuclear explosion.

Robin

Steve's scream came through every radio simultaneously. Not pain scream. Dimensional scream. Like reality itself was screaming through him.

The Backpack reading hit zero. Completely drained. Seven hundred percent charge absorbed in ninety seconds.

"STEVE!" I shouted into the radio. "Respond! STEVE!"

Static. Then weak voice: "Still... alive. Barely. Gate's closed. Mission... accomplished."

Bob's monitors showed impossible readings. Steve's corruption scars had spread—covering his entire torso, arms, spreading up his neck. But not spreading uncontrolled. Stabilizing. Integrating.

"What happened to him?" Joyce whispered.

"He became bridge," Dustin said quietly. "And survived it. Again."

Steve

I collapsed out of the operator chair. Every nerve ending screamed. My corruption scars glowed white-hot, then faded to new pattern—silver lines covering most of my body, pulsing with residual dimensional energy.

The Backpack sat at 0%. Completely drained. But I was alive.

"Charges," I rasped into radio. "Detonate... now."

Hopper's voice: "You need to extract first—"

"No time. Russians... coming. Blow it. Now."

Ten seconds of silence. Then Hopper: "Evacuating our people. Detonating in sixty seconds. Get out, Steve. That's an order."

I stood on shaking legs. Phase 3 barely functional, Pain Heal exhausted, Backpack empty. But alive.

Stumbled toward the exit. Thirty seconds. The gate chamber behind me, Russians pursuing.

Twenty seconds. Past the armory, through the corridors.

Ten seconds. Reached the elevator, slammed the button.

Five. Four. Three.

Elevator doors closed.

The charges detonated. The Russian base collapsed. And I ascended toward surface, toward my team, toward survival I'd barely earned.

The Mind Flayer's final words echoed: "YOU SURVIVED AGAIN. BUT EACH SURVIVAL CHANGES YOU. HOW MUCH HUMANITY REMAINS?"

Enough, I thought. Enough to keep fighting.

The elevator doors opened to dawn light. Chrissy stood there, tears streaming. I stumbled into her arms.

"You came back," she sobbed. "You actually came back."

"Told you I'd try." My voice was wrecked. "Mission accomplished. Gate closed. Russians defeated. Everyone survived."

Behind me, underground, the Russian base burned. Above me, Eleven had won her battle—Spider Monster defeated, Flayed freed, Mind Flayer driven back.

Everyone alive. Steve Harrington transformed but surviving.

Worth every sacrifice.

Every single one.
