North of the Wall. The Lands of Always Winter.
A place where life had no business being, where even time seemed to freeze solid.
Deep within a forgotten valley, at the mouth of a cave sealed by ancient magic, a towering figure stood without moving. Still as an ice sculpture.
The Night King.
Its eyes burned with cold blue fire, locked on the darkness beyond the cave entrance.
It had been standing here a long time.
It could feel the ancient consciousness inside — vast, powerful — fading. Day by day, a little more. Like an oil lamp guttering down to nothing, liable to go out at any moment.
The Night King was patient.
It would stay here and keep watch. The Three-Eyed Raven would not slip out to find a new body. Not while it stood guard. All it had to do was wait for that lamp to go dark for good.
And when it did, it would raze this place to rubble. The old monster who had lurked here for a thousand years, his last sanctuary, and every last one of those irritating Children of the Forest , all of it, ground to cold dust.
Then something changed.
The Night King's ice-carved face shifted. It lifted its head sharply, and for the first time in its long existence, something almost like confusion flickered in those blue eyes.
The consciousness.
It was gone.
Not faded. Not snuffed out.
Gone. As if it had never been.
Like a sun that had burned for a thousand years, and then, without the faintest warning, was simply erased from the sky.
That ancient will had vanished from its perception , completely, without a trace.
The Night King turned slowly.
For the first time since it had begun its vigil, its gaze left the cave entrance and moved south. Across the endless ice fields. Across the Haunted Forest. All the way to that massive white wall stretching between earth and sky.
It felt something there.
A new power, stirring quietly , and strangely familiar.
It mounted its skeletal warhorse and rode hard toward the Wall.
---
Castle Black.
A horn blast cut through the morning stillness. Then another.
"Lord Lynn has returned!"
The Night's Watch erupted into chaos on the battlements.
Lynn didn't look at them. He tilted his head back and studied the Wall , eight thousand years of ice and snow stacked into something almost impossible. He could feel a pair of eyes watching him from the other side.
Not through any crow or ranger.
Something older than that. More direct.
Then a crow launched itself from Castle Black's highest watchtower.
It was not an ordinary crow.
Its feathers were black and glossy, its body noticeably larger than any natural bird. But what stopped the eye was its face. Those weren't a bird's eyes. There was none of the blank, unthinking vacancy that belonged to a creature of its kind. What stared out instead was something ancient and bottomless , and right now, blazing with a joy that bordered on madness.
The crow circled once, let out a single hoarse cry, and dropped into a dive like a black arrow aimed straight at Lynn's group.
It wasn't targeting Lynn.
It wasn't targeting Miranda.
Its target was the figure walking a step behind them , the Winter Wight wearing Robert Arryn's young face.
"My lord, watch out!"
Miranda's hand flew to her bow on instinct.
Lynn raised one hand. Easy. Don't.
The crow was fast. In a blink it was right in front of the "Robert Arryn," and then its body dissolved , no claws, no beak, just a writhing mass of black smoke that poured through the air and lunged for the Wight's orifices.
A consciousness ancient beyond reckoning crashed down like a falling mountain.
It carried a will that did not ask. It carried the authority of something that had ruled from the shadows for centuries.
It wanted this body. This perfect, living shell. Its new vessel.
Lynn extended his hand.
Just that. A palm held flat between the crow and the Wight.
HUM!
Ice magic ignited. An invisible barrier snapped into place.
The black smoke hit it and recoiled with a silent shriek, spinning backward through the air and collapsing back into crow-form. The bird lurched, wings beating wildly, before it managed to steady itself.
The madness in its eyes was gone. What replaced it was fury , and disbelief.
How dare this young man stop it. How could he?
"Old Crow."
Lynn's voice was calm, and left no room for argument.
"There's no need to rush."
"You've forgotten half of our agreement."
The crow tilted its head and fixed him with an unblinking stare. It made no sound, but a voice resonated directly inside Lynn's mind , ancient, imperious, carrying the weight of a creature accustomed to looking down on everything beneath it.
Young man. What is the meaning of this?
I have seen the body. I am satisfied.
Are you blocking me because you intend to go back on your word?
As if everything Lynn had done for it was simply his due.
"Go back on my word?"
Lynn almost smiled. He looked at the crow hovering in the air the way you'd look at a child throwing a fit.
"Of course not. I'm here to remind you that it's your turn to hold up your end."
My end?
A thread of impatience entered the Three-Eyed Raven's thoughts.
I gave you guidance. I taught you greensight. I taught you the skinchanger ability.
Is that not sufficient?
"No."
Lynn shook his head.
"That was a down payment. A little interest you paid up front to get me to find you a new body."
"What I want is the principal."
His gaze went sharp.
"Music magic."
"Nature magic."
"The two ancient magics rooted in the faith of the Old Gods — born from the Children of the Forest."
"Give them to me."
"Then the body is yours."
"That's what we agreed."
The air seemed to stop.
The wind died. The snowflakes hung.
The crow floated motionless in the grey morning, staring at him. Behind those ancient eyes, a rage vast enough to crack mountains was building.
You dare , threaten me?!
You dare use my future as leverage against me?!
Do you have any idea who I am?!
"I know exactly who you are."
Lynn's expression didn't shift. Still easy. Still unhurried.
"The Three-Eyed Raven."
"An old monster who has lived a thousand years, pulling strings from the shadows, convinced he controls the fate of Westeros."
"A creature who no longer has a body of his own." A beat. "Stuck inside a bird."
Every word landed like a brand pressed into flesh, searing through the Three-Eyed Raven's thousand-year pride.
YOU SEEK DEATH!!!
The mental assault hit like a wave , invisible, enormous, crashing against Lynn's mind with enough force to flatten anything in its path.
The Three-Eyed Raven was done tolerating this. It would teach this ignorant boy what it meant to defy something like it.
Lynn didn't blink.
HUM!
A will erupted from him , ice-cold, utterly pure, and crushing in its weight.
If the Three-Eyed Raven's mental force was a black ocean in storm, then Lynn's will was a mountain of ice rising from the Lands of Always Winter itself , sheer, immovable, indifferent to the waves breaking against it.
The two forces met in the air between them.
No sound. No light.
But behind Lynn, Miranda went white and stumbled back a step. She felt it in her soul , two invisible hands seizing it and pulling in opposite directions, nearly tearing her apart where she stood.
She stared at the back of his head.
She had thought she understood how strong he was.
She hadn't come close.
The stalemate lasted less than a second.
The crow dropped out of the air like a stone.
It tumbled across the snow, thrashing, trying to rise. It couldn't even open its wings. Those eyes that had blazed with ancient wisdom and imperious pride now held nothing but shock , and fear.
It had lost.
A thousand years of accumulated power. A thousand years of building itself into something untouchable.
Defeated, completely and instantly, by a man barely past twenty.
What was this?
Lynn walked over slowly and crouched down in front of the bird struggling weakly in the snow.
"Now," he said. "Can we have a real conversation?"
His voice was still quiet. To the Three-Eyed Raven, it was colder than the wind.
Silence.
The crow lay there, spent. The power it had always trusted to make the world bend was nothing here. It had no ground left to stand on.
"Good. I think you understand."
Lynn reached out and ran a hand gently across the crow's sleek black feathers.
"Give me the knowledge."
"This is your only chance."
"Because if you don't—"
Something cold moved through his eyes.
"I have no problem erasing the Three-Eyed Raven from this world entirely."
"Then I'll go to your cave myself and pick through every secret you've buried there, one by one."
"I'll drag out every last Child of the Forest. Take their heads. Mount them on the walls of my castle."
A long silence.
...I'll give it.
The thought that came back was barely a whisper , soaked in humiliation, ragged with fury that had nowhere left to go.
I'll give you... all of it.
The Three-Eyed Raven. Ancient beyond memory. Self-proclaimed architect of Westeros's fate, the hand that moved kings and seasons from the dark.
It bowed its head.
For the first time in a thousand years.
