Chapter 8 - 8. The Blue Blur vs. The Ultimate Lifeform

---

The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting amber rays across the shattered remnants of what used to be Central Plaza. Smoke curled lazily from broken rooftops, and flickering streetlights struggled to come alive in the dimming twilight. Among the debris, a lone figure stood—a blue streak in the wind, still as stone for once in his life.

Sonic the Hedgehog clenched his fists at his sides, his eyes narrowed. His quills bristled with emotion—not from adrenaline, but something far deeper. Something far more dangerous. Jealousy.

He had arrived moments ago, racing through the wreckage, expecting to find Eggman at the center of the destruction. But what he found instead had left him speechless.

Amy Rose, bloodied and bruised but alive, held in the arms of Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow had looked up. Their eyes met. Sonic saw no malice in his rival's gaze. Only... relief.

That's what stung the most.

"You're late," Shadow said, voice low, carrying easily over the crackling flames around them.

Sonic's foot shifted, grinding ash under his sole. "I was busy cleaning up Eggman's mess in the west sector. You two seemed to have this covered."

Amy stirred in Shadow's arms and let out a weak groan. Her eyelids fluttered, then stilled. Shadow adjusted her gently, protectively.

Sonic's eyes flashed. "Put her down."

"She's injured."

"I said—put her down."

Shadow stood slowly, not in defiance, but calculated calm. He laid Amy carefully on a strip of intact pavement, draping his own red-lined cloak over her. Then he faced Sonic head-on.

For a long moment, neither spoke. The air between them crackled—Chaos energy met kinetic tension.

"She was in the middle of Eggman's ambush," Shadow began, "risked her life to protect a group of civilians. I got there just in time. She would've died if—"

"If you hadn't been her knight in shining armor?" Sonic snapped.

Shadow tilted his head. "You should be grateful."

"I've been protecting her for years," Sonic growled. "Where were you then?"

"Exactly where I needed to be."

The words weren't meant to provoke. But they struck Sonic like a gut punch.

Sonic dashed forward in a blink, air splitting behind him. Shadow anticipated it. In an instant, they clashed, fist meeting fist in a shockwave that shattered nearby glass.

"You think you know her?!" Sonic snarled, twisting, aiming a spinning kick.

Shadow blocked it with a forearm, skidding back. "I understand her better than you ever tried to."

"She's not some mission, Shadow!"

"No, she's not." Shadow's voice dropped, dark and steady. "She's someone I've come to care about. Deeply."

Sonic faltered mid-strike, the words stopping him cold.

Shadow didn't press. He didn't gloat. He simply stood his ground, breathing evenly.

Sonic's eyes trembled. He glanced back at Amy, who still lay unconscious, her hand loosely curled around the edge of Shadow's cloak.

A flicker of pain crossed Sonic's face. Not just jealousy. Regret.

"You're not supposed to be the one she runs to," he whispered.

"Then maybe," Shadow replied, "you should've run to her first."

Silence fell. The flames no longer roared—they whispered.

Shadow turned away, kneeling beside Amy once more. He touched two fingers to her wrist, checking her pulse.

Sonic remained rooted where he stood, eyes downcast.

"You changed," he said at last.

"So did she," Shadow answered. "And maybe... it's time you did too."

Later that night, Rouge the Bat found Sonic alone atop a crumbling radio tower, legs dangling over the edge. She landed softly beside him, wings folding.

"He beat you, huh?" she asked, sipping from a thermos.

Sonic didn't answer.

"Physically?" she nudged. "Emotionally?"

Still no reply.

Rouge sighed. "You know, for someone so fast, you're surprisingly slow when it comes to feelings."

He let out a humorless chuckle. "Guess I thought I had all the time in the world."

"You still have time," she said. "But maybe not the same role."

He looked over at her.

"She doesn't need a hero," Rouge said gently. "She needs someone who sees her. All of her. Even the parts that aren't shining."

Sonic exhaled slowly. "And Shadow does that?"

Rouge shrugged. "He's learning. But he listens."

Sonic went quiet again.

Below them, the city stirred. Emergency lights flickered. Drones flew overhead. The world hadn't ended—but it had changed.

And so had they.

---

Back on the battlefield, Shadow sat vigil beside Amy as medics began to arrive. Tails rushed in with a stretcher. Knuckles jogged up behind him, battle-worn but alive.

"She's going to be okay," one medic assured.

Shadow didn't nod. He already knew.

As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Amy stirred. Her hand reached blindly—and landed on Shadow's.

He held it.

"I'm here," he said softly.

And for once, the Ultimate Lifeform didn't feel alone.
