For a few seconds, no one moved.
The battlefield that had just moments ago been filled with chaos, destruction, and unbearable pressure now felt… empty. Not peaceful just hollow, like something important had been removed too suddenly for anyone to understand it.
Ash drifted slowly through the air.
Yura stood still, her eyes fixed on the place where Yoshiro had disappeared. Her breathing was steady, but her fingers were trembling slightly at her sides. It wasn't fear. It wasn't even relief.
It was something harder to name.
Kairo was the first to break.
"…what…"
His voice came out dry, almost confused, like he hadn't fully caught up to what just happened. He took a step forward, then stopped, staring at the space in front of him as if expecting Yoshiro to suddenly reappear.
"…what just happened?"
No one answered him.
Tyouro let out a slow breath, his shoulders dropping slightly as the tension left his body. But instead of relaxing, he clicked his tongue and looked away, his expression irritated more than anything.
"…that's it?" he muttered. "After all that?"
His voice carried frustration, but underneath it, there was something else something quieter.
Kimimaru remained silent, his gaze lowered slightly. His grip on his weapon had loosened, though he hadn't even realized it. His mind wasn't on the fight anymore.
It was on the words.
"…don't lose it."
He repeated it in his head without meaning to.
Yura finally blinked, her focus shifting as she exhaled slowly. She stepped forward, her eyes scanning the ground, the air, the space itself like she didn't trust that it was really over.
"…he erased himself," she said quietly.
Kairo looked at her immediately. "Why would he do that?"
Her expression didn't change.
"…because he already lost."
That answer didn't feel satisfying.
Not to Kairo.
Not to anyone.
Tyouro scoffed lightly, crossing his arms. "So he just… gives up? After all that 'I'll destroy the world' talk?"
Yura shook her head slightly.
"No," she replied. "That wasn't giving up."
She paused for a second, then added, "…that was the only thing he had left to control."
The wind picked up slightly, carrying more ash through the air. It brushed against their skin, light but noticeable, like a reminder that something had ended here.
Kairo clenched his fists.
"…that's stupid."
The words came out sharper than expected.
"He killed all those people… tried to kill us… and then just disappears like that?"
His chest tightened, frustration rising fast.
"That doesn't fix anything."
"No," Yura said calmly. "It doesn't."
Kairo looked at her, clearly expecting more, but she didn't continue. Instead, she turned slightly, her gaze shifting toward the destroyed remains of Dragonbone Ridge.
"…but it wasn't about fixing anything."
Silence settled again, heavier this time.
Tyouro rubbed the back of his neck, clearly uncomfortable with how serious things had gotten. "Man… I hate this kind of ending."
Kairo glanced at him. "What kind?"
"The kind where no one wins."
That… landed.
Kimimaru finally lifted his head slightly, his eyes sharper now, but not in the way they were during the fight. This was different.
More thoughtful.
"…he wasn't lying," he said quietly.
Kairo frowned. "About what?"
Kimimaru's gaze drifted to the ground for a moment.
"…about why he did it."
Yura didn't respond, but she didn't disagree either.
Kairo looked between them, clearly not convinced.
"So what? That means we're just supposed to feel bad for him?"
"No," Yura replied immediately.
Her voice was firm now.
"It means we understand him."
She turned her head slightly, her eyes meeting Kairo's.
"And still stop him."
That was the difference.
Kairo opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out. His thoughts were messy, tangled between anger, confusion, and something he didn't want to admit.
Because part of him did understand.
And that made it worse.
Tyouro sighed loudly, stretching his arms slightly as if trying to shake off the tension.
"…whatever. He's gone now."
He looked around at the destroyed village, his expression flattening.
"…but this place isn't."
The reality of it hit again.
The burned ground.
The absence of life.
The silence that shouldn't exist.
Kairo slowly turned, taking it all in properly this time. Earlier, he was too focused on surviving, on fighting, on not getting erased.
Now...
There was nothing distracting him.
"…we couldn't save them," he said quietly.
No one argued.
Because it was true.
Yura walked forward a few steps, her movements slow, controlled. She crouched slightly, letting her fingers brush against the ash-covered ground.
"…no," she said.
Then she stood again, her expression unreadable.
"But we stopped it from getting worse."
It wasn't a victory.
But it wasn't nothing either.
Kairo exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair. His body was still exhausted, every muscle reminding him how close they came to losing.
"…we almost died."
Tyouro let out a short laugh. "You're just realizing that now?"
"I'm serious."
"So am I," Tyouro replied, though his grin faded a little. "That guy wasn't normal."
Kimimaru nodded slightly.
"…his ability doesn't follow normal rules."
Yura glanced at him. "Erasure."
He nodded again. "It doesn't clash with attacks. It doesn't overpower. It just… removes."
Kairo frowned. "So how did we even fight that?"
Yura answered this time.
"…we didn't."
That caught his attention.
"What do you mean?"
She looked at him directly.
"We survived it."
That was the truth.
They didn't beat Yoshiro through strength.
They endured long enough for him to break.
Kairo clicked his tongue, clearly not satisfied with that.
"…next time, I don't want it to be like that."
Tyouro smirked slightly. "Then get stronger."
Kairo shot him a look. "I am."
"Not enough."
That stung more than it should have.
Yura stepped in before it could turn into something else.
"He's right," she said simply.
Kairo sighed, looking away. "Yeah, yeah… I know."
For a moment, none of them spoke again.
The wind continued to move through the ruins, quieter now, almost gentle.
Then
Kimimaru's eyes shifted slightly.
"…someone's coming."
The others reacted instantly, their bodies tensing despite their exhaustion.
Kairo turned. "Who-"
A sudden pressure cut through the air.
Not hostile.
But overwhelming.
Before anyone could react further, a figure appeared in the distance, moving so fast that the space between them closed almost instantly.
And then
He was there.
Shougo Takahano stood in front of them, his presence steady, but his eyes sharp as they scanned each of his students one by one.
"…you're alive."
It wasn't a question.
It was confirmation.
Kairo let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. "Sensei…"
Tyouro smirked slightly. "Took you long enough."
Shougo ignored the comment, his gaze shifting past them, taking in the destroyed village, the ash, the absence.
For a brief moment
His expression changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
"…I see."
Yura stepped forward slightly. "It's over."
Shougo looked back at her.
"…no," he said quietly.
That made them pause.
His eyes hardened just a little.
"This is just the beginning."
The words settled heavily in the air.
Kairo frowned. "What do you mean?"
Shougo didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked up slightly, his gaze distant, like he was already thinking ahead.
"…if someone like that exists…"
His voice lowered slightly.
"…then the world you're stepping into is far worse than you think."
Silence followed.
Not the empty kind from before.
A different kind.
The kind that comes before something bigger.
Kairo clenched his fists again, but this time, it wasn't out of frustration.
It was resolve.
"…then we'll be ready."
Yura glanced at him.
Tyouro smirked again.
Kimimaru said nothing but he didn't look away.
Shougo watched them for a moment longer.
Then he gave a small nod.
"…good."
The wind moved again, carrying the last traces of ash into the sky.
What remained wasn't just destruction.
It was a beginning.
And none of them fully understood yet
Just how heavy it would become.
