Chapter 395 - Chapter 395 - The Reckoning

Location: The Crucible Grounds - Arena Floor

Time: Present Day - Tournament Finals

The arena buzzed with chaotic energy as the crowd processed what they had just witnessed. Whispers spread like wildfire, each voice carrying a different shade of disbelief.

"Has Slate gone truly insane? He just attacked a high-profile child of the Halverns!"

"The OSI are supposed to be the good guys. Are they really allowing this?"

"The Halverns? The OSI is a federal organization dealing with national security. If they want to find their guy, they're going to get him—by whatever means necessary."

The geeky kid sat in silence, his expression unreadable. His body was low in his seat, his hands clasped together. He said nothing, his eyes fixed on the chaos below.

---

Slate held the device up, its surface gleaming with a faint, dark light. His voice carried a note of cold satisfaction.

"Surprised, girly? Don't worry. Bare with it for now."

Chloe's gaze was fixed on the device, her eyes narrowing with recognition. She stared at Slate's hands, her voice carrying a note of quiet shock.

"That thing—"

Slate's lips curled into a crazed smirk. "Oh, this thing? Call it the G-Volt. It can destabilize and shut down one's core, as well as the nerves of a Weave user. Temporarily, of course. Something the OSI and the Mysterium clan are currently building to contain their dogs. Wouldn't want another one starting to bark at them again."

His gaze shifted to the crowd, his eyes blazing with cold disdain.

The crowd's reaction was immediate—a mixture of outrage and fear.

"That's insane! They're building weapons to control us!"

"Who do they think they are?!"

"I knew something was off about this whole tournament!"

But their protests were muted, their voices lost in the presence of the OSI agents.

Valerik's voice carried a note of genuine shock. "I can't believe it. I knew all of this was too good to be true. They handed us those advanced suits—those things—just to keep us on leashes. How thoughtful of them."

Jericho's voice was flat, bitter. "I can't believe it. I saw that my Jerkin base was just one of their lapdogs. But this? This is straight-up being f*cked over."

Nikolai Morozov shook his head slowly, his voice carrying a note of cold cynicism. "Why are you all so emotional about it? Like you didn't see it coming. With the means you can accomplish, didn't you stop to think the lenders would just let the given run around with it unhindered? No free lunch in this world, fellows. The only thing we unconsciously gave away was our freedom."

Dhivya Rana's voice carried a note of dark agreement. "More like our souls, if you ask me."

Eugene Torrent turned to Brenna, his voice carrying a note of sharp suspicion. "Why are you so calm about it? You're in the same boat as the rest of us."

Brenna's expression was one of quiet mystery. Her lips curved into a small, knowing smile, but she said nothing.

Michael Snovidenie's voice carried a note of cold amusement. "How ruthless the Mysterium clan is. Well, I'm not surprised. A group of mercenary killers posing as international righteous to the public? Factor in that the one who founded it was a merciless killer... what do you expect from dealing with such types? These humans and the half-bloods are all idiots for falling prey to them."

Kael's body trembled, his hands clenched at his sides. His internal voice carried a note of cold fury.

This Frost Heir speaks like he's above it all, he thought. But he's just as trapped as the rest of us.

---

One of the OSI agents stepped forward, his attire distinct from the others. He wore a crisp, white coat over his tactical gear, a small handheld device in his hands. The device was sleek, metallic, its surface pulsing with a faint, blue light.

He approached Leo Jerkins, his movements precise and deliberate. He raised the device, its surface scanning Leo's body with a soft, humming sound.

Slate's voice carried a note of sharp impatience. "What is it?"

The agent's voice was clinical, professional. "Subject has minimal Weave residue. Barely detectable. Far below average baseline."

Slate's face contorted with rage. He snatched the device from the agent's hands, his eyes scanning the readout. His voice carried a note of barely contained fury.

"Just whose sick joke was it that this kid was Elijah Marcus?!"

He shoved the device back at the agent and kicked Leo to the ground. His boot connected with Leo's body, stomping on him with brutal force.

The agent's voice carried a note of shame. "It was a tip we received at the Taskforce department, sir. From higher ups."

Slate's expression shifted to one of cold fury. "Well, whoever did it did a rotten job. We didn't get the guy. But if it was from higher ups, there must be some truth in it. And today, I ain't leaving until I capture Elijah Marcus."

---

His hand shot out, grabbing Chloe by the neck. The G-Volt pressed against her temple, its surface crackling with dark energy.

Chloe's voice was sharp, defiant. "If my father hears about this, you'll be the one worrying, not Elijah."

Slate's voice carried a note of cold amusement. "Yeah, your well-connected father is going to come after me, chase me through the ends of the earth. Oh, I'm so scared."

His voice dropped to a venomous whisper.

"Listen, girly. Your Halverns are all great and all, but that's only in Crestwood. Me? I've been chosen for this gig by a very... not-to-be-messed-with group of people. They've granted me immunity for any decision I make here in Crestwood—or anywhere else in the world, as long as it involves capturing that wacko ex of yours. Your big, scary daddy and that family name mean nothing to them. To them, he's no different from what you are to me."

He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"How do you think that self-absorbed grandfather of yours even fell in the first place? Got too cocky. Didn't know his true place."

Chloe's expression shifted to one of cold realization. "You know what happened to my grandfather?"

Slate shook his head slowly. "I don't. And even if I did, I wouldn't tell you. Probably only a few people know the truth—his parents, and that Marlyne chick who got cut by her wacko boyfriend."

Chloe's voice was barely a whisper. "Marlyne..."

Just who was she to my family? she thought. If Slate knows what happened to my grandfather...

Slate's voice carried a note of cold warning. "Now keep it down for your own good. I'm not in a patient mood right now. If you tick me off, I might do something I won't regret."

Chloe's expression was one of cold defiance, but she said nothing.

---

Slate's voice rose, carrying a note of manic rage. "Elijah didn't imagine I would do this, right? You and Miss Chloe here—I heard you knew each other since childhood. Obviously you fancied her. Which orphaned brat wouldn't miss the chance to score with a rich, stupid girl? I know I wouldn't."

He paused, his voice dripping with venom.

"You weren't satisfied with those rich adoptive archaeologist couples, were you? You wanted a much bigger pie. You've got quite the appetite, Elijah kid. Though you two aren't together anymore, I bet that hard, stoned heart of yours can't bear to see your flower suddenly permanently chopped off, huh?"

His voice was a cold, calculated whisper.

"What's it going to be, Elijah Marcus?"

---

The arena fell into a heavy, expectant silence. The crowd watched with bated breath, their eyes fixed on the standoff unfolding before them.

Slate's grip on Chloe tightened, the G-Volt crackling with dark energy.

Chloe's expression was one of cold defiance, her eyes fixed on the crowd.

Leo Jerkins lay on the ground, his body broken, his gaze fixed on the ceiling.
