The sun beat down ruthlessly on the Hidden Leaf Village, baking the earth into a molten fire. Amidst the ruins of a sector still recovering from Orochimaru's invasion, Might Guy stood with his fists clenched, his teeth flashing a blinding, cinematic spark despite the oppressive heat.
"Alright, Team Guy! The path of youth is paved with hard work... and today, quite literally, with clay! The first one to transport all the designated bricks from the quarry pile to the construction site is the winner. Who is with me?!"
Guy's roaring voice echoed. Without waiting for a response, both he and Rock Lee dropped to the ground, instantly executing perfect handstands, and began kicking bricks upward into their hands to start the race.
Tenten wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, staring in utter disbelief. "Why do I have to do heavy manual labor in this miserable heat?" she complained loudly, her shoulders slumping. She glanced over at Neji, who was standing quietly nearby, his hands folded behind his back.
"And who exactly is the cool-looking guy?" Tenten whispered, gesturing discretely toward a pale, white-haired youth standing a few paces away. "I've never seen him around the village before."
Neji, whose chest and torso were still wrapped tightly in medical bandages from his near-fatal encounter with Kidomaru of the Sound Four, kept his gaze fixed ahead. "Well," Neji replied in his calm tone, "that is a long story, and it is not mine to tell. All you need to know for now is that he is currently assigned to our team."
Tenten's eyes softened with genuine concern as she looked at Neji's bandages. "More importantly, how are your injuries? That spider-web freak from the Sound Village really did a number on you."
A few feet away, Kimimaro's ears twitched and a spark of curiosity flared. "So, this is the boy who defeated Kidomaru," Kimimaro thought, analyzing Neji's steady stance. It had long confirmed his suspicion that the Sound Four had indeed fallen. Had they not failed their mission, Naruto, Rock Lee, and Gaara would never have been able to intercept him taking Sasuke back.
Neji offered Tenten a reassuring nod. "I am recovering well enough. But as for my opponent... I cannot say the same for him."
"Good to hear," Tenten said, though she didn't linger. Realizing that Guy and Lee were already pulling ahead in the brick count. "Don't forget the mission! I'm not getting left in the dust!" She sprinted off toward the quarry pile, leaving Neji and Kimimaro standing side by side.
An awkward silence settled between the two young men. The sound of Guy's booming laughter echoed from across the field. Neji was searching for something to break the tension. He glanced at the skintight green fabric Kimimaro was wearing... a spare outfit Guy-sensei had gifted the new student.
"Are those green bodysuits... truly as comfortable as Lee claims?" Neji asked, his voice entirely deadpan.
Kimimaro looked down at the atrocious emerald fabric hugging his frame, then looked at the massive pile of heavy clay blocks. "What a monumental waste of my time," he muttered darkly, completely ignoring the fashion question.
With a sigh of resignation, Kimimaro walked over to the pile. He bent down, scooped up as many bricks as could physically fit into his arms, and used a swift shunshin flicker to deposit them at the construction site.
At first, it was an incredibly simple task. His body, trained to be a weapon of assassination, found the basic mechanics of lifting and moving effortless. But after the first one hundred trips back and forth under the blazing, midday sun, the sheer repetition began to take its toll. The heat was a suffocating blanket, and the lactic acid began to burn in his muscles.
Nearby, Rock Lee and Neji were both gasping for air, their chests heaving violently as they dropped their latest loads. Tenten had given up entirely; she was sitting comfortably beneath the sprawling shade of an old oak tree, doing what she did best... shouting words of encouragement to the boys while fanning herself with a giant scroll.
The only two souls who hadn't slowed down were Might Guy and Kimimaro.
"My youth is roaring! The flame of passion will not be extinguished by a few pieces of mud!" Guy bellowed. Unlike Kimimaro, who was running on his feet, Guy was still sprinting back and forth on his hands, balancing a stack of twelve bricks perfectly on his upturned boots.
Kimimaro's eyes widened slightly, a rare crack in his stoic demeanor. "I have made exactly six hundred and thirty-four trips," he calculated, his breathing growing shallow. The heat and the structural strain are testing even my limits. "This man... he is a monster."
As Kimimaro paused to catch his breath, a shadow fell over him. A rugged, sweat-stained construction worker stepped forward, extending a cracked, hollowed-out coconut filled with cool, clear juice.
"Drink up, kid. You've earned it," the worker said, wiping his brow with a grimy rag. "You look like you think this is pointless. I get it. A powerful shinobi like you probably thinks your talents are wasted on menial labor."
Kimimaro accepted the coconut, his throat parched. "I will not deny that there are far more critical missions to attend to."
"Maybe," the worker replied, looking out over the expanding skeleton of the new buildings. "But a lot of good people died on this very soil during the invasion. By rebuilding this place brick by brick, we are building hope for the survivors. It lets them know the village isn't dead."
Kimimaro took a slow sip of the sweet coconut water, feeling the cool liquid revitalize him. He looked at the man's tired but resilient face. "What is your name?"
The worker smirked, crossing his arms. "Do you actually care?"
"I don't," Kimimaro thought bluntly. He is just a civilian worker. This is a repetitive task meant for low-level genin. Yet, looking at the genuine pride in the man's eyes, Kimimaro found himself speaking differently. "I don't care. I might forget your name in a day, a month, or a year. But for right now, in this moment, I want to know."
The worker let out a hearty, booming laugh. "Fair enough! It's Renji."
"One thousand!" Guy suddenly screamed from across the yard, flipping gracefully onto his feet and sending his final stack of bricks cascading into a neat pile. "That was a spectacular warm-up! Wouldn't you say so, fellas?" Guy beamed, wiping a waterfall of sweat from his forehead.
"Guy-sensei!" Rock Lee cried out, tears of absolute adoration welling up in his eyes. "I will follow you to the absolute ends of the earth!" Neji and Tenten could only groan in sheer exhaustion.

A/N: So, Kimimaro's first mission... well it is not one would expect. Tsunade wanted Kimimaro to understand and feel the emotions at the ground level before actually giving him critical tasks... if she wants for him stay in Konoha. Kimimaro needs to feel like he belongs in Konoha.
Thank you Noiir, for pointing out that Kankuro should not have know about Sasori capturing the third Kazekage. However, we shall go ahead with that for now.
