Chapter 25 - Missing Harem

A week had dragged by in the dim, musty room of the rundown inn on the kingdom's edge, the kind of place that smelled of stale ale and damp wood. You hadn't left Mia's side once. She lay on the narrow bed, still pale and bandaged, her breathing shallow but steady after the System's partial healing. You kept her close, one arm draped protectively over her waist, fingers occasionally brushing the soft fur of her auburn ears or the striped tail that twitched weakly in her sleep. The bond hummed faintly between you, a fragile thread keeping her anchored.

Every few hours you opened the System interface, the blue glow casting cold light across the cracked walls. **[Harem Contracts Active: Mia – Stable. Sora – Alive. Sylvia – Alive.]** The runes for Elara and Lila remained dark voids. Gone. You stared at those empty slots longer than you should have, chest tight with a mix of sadness and bitter disappointment. Two girls who had fought for you, laughed with you, trusted you—dead because you couldn't fix the kingdom fast enough. The guilt sat like lead in your gut, but you pushed it down. Checking the contracts became your ritual, a silent promise that at least Sora and Sylvia were still breathing somewhere out there.

Mia finally stirred on the seventh morning. Her emerald eyes fluttered open, hazy at first, then sharpening as she took in the small room: peeling wallpaper, a single flickering lantern, the faint scent of rain leaking through the warped window. She looked at you, then around, ears flattening slightly.

"…Are we back at the beginning again?" she rasped, voice hoarse from disuse. "Begging at the low point?"

You exhaled, fingers still gently stroking her ear. "Yeah. The whole kingdom's in ruins. Fires everywhere, people revolting. They want all of us dead—especially me. The royal family's fate is ours if we stay."

She was quiet for a long moment, tail curling weakly around your wrist. Then her eyes hardened with that familiar fighter's spark. "We need a plan. Find Sora and Sylvia first. They're still alive—I can feel the contracts. Then we leave. Head to the neighboring kingdom. Refuge. Start over before we end up like the old royals."

You nodded. "That's what I've been thinking. We slip out tonight, quiet. No more trying to rule a broken throne."

Mia shifted, wincing at the pull of her scar, and slowly pushed herself up until she was straddling your lap. Her curvaceous body settled against yours, full breasts brushing your chest through the thin bandage wrap. "Tonight we rest properly," she murmured, voice low and warm, tail swishing once. "Just… let me feel you close. No fighting. No running. Not yet."

You agreed, arms sliding around her waist, pulling her gently against you. The bond thrummed softly, a moment of fragile peace in the storm.

But rest never came.

A scream ripped through the night outside—high-pitched, terrified. You both tensed. You moved to the window, cracking it open just enough to peer down into the muddy alley behind the inn. A small boy, maybe ten years old, stood frozen in the lantern light, pointing straight at the inn with wide eyes.

"Demons! Demon raid again!" he shrieked, voice cracking. "They're here! The cat-eared monster and the demon girl—"

You didn't hesitate. The kingdom already had your head on a pike. One more death wouldn't change the chopping list. You activated the ability you'd kept hidden since the revolt—**Shadow Sever**—a quick, silent pulse of dark mana that sliced through the air like an invisible blade. The boy's scream cut off mid-word. His body crumpled soundlessly into the mud, eyes wide in eternal surprise.

It was fucked up. You knew it. A kid. But mercy had died with the kingdom.

Before you could close the window, a shadow blurred across the alley. Sora dropped through the opening in one fluid motion, leathery wings folding tight as she landed lightly on the floorboards. Her crimson-tinted skin glistened with rain, violet eyes locking onto yours with fierce relief. Heart-shaped tail lashing once, small horns catching the lantern light, she straightened, breathing hard.

"Master… I found you."
