Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Thanos Intelligence

The secure briefing room felt too small for the conversation we were about to have.

Yelena, Frank, and Maya sat around the table, expressions ranging from curious to concerned. They'd been summoned for "classified strategic assessment"—code for information that couldn't leak without catastrophic consequences.

"Before we begin," I said, "everything discussed here stays in this room. No reports to SHIELD, no Ghost Network dissemination, no casual mentions. This intelligence is compartmented at highest level."

"Understood," Frank said. Yelena and Maya nodded.

I activated the holographic display. An image appeared—purple titan, golden armor, expression of absolute conviction.

"His name is Thanos. In approximately six years, he will attempt to collect all six Infinity Stones and use them to erase half of all life in the universe."

Silence.

"I'm sorry," Yelena said slowly. "Did you say half of all life?"

"Across the entire universe. Every inhabited planet. Every species. Instantaneous annihilation of fifty percent of all living beings." I pulled up more data. "He believes this will bring balance—prevent overpopulation and resource depletion by killing enough people to make survival sustainable."

"That's insane," Maya breathed.

"That's his genuinely held belief. He'll pursue it with absolute conviction and unlimited resources." I displayed the Infinity Stones. "Six artifacts of cosmic power. Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time, Soul. Individually dangerous. Combined, they grant wielder god-like control over existence itself."

Frank leaned forward. "How do you know this?"

"Pattern recognition. Cosmic intelligence analysis. Educated extrapolation from recovered alien data." The lies came easily now. "Thanos is mentioned in Chitauri intelligence fragments. The Infinity Stones are documented in Asgardian mythology Thor confirmed. Combining those data points suggests future confrontation."

"You're guessing," Yelena said.

"I'm calculating probabilities based on available evidence."

"Bullshit. Your calculations are too specific. Six years? All six Stones? Half of all life?" She crossed her arms. "You know something you're not telling us."

I met her gaze. "Yes. And I'm not going to explain how. Just trust that the intelligence is accurate."

"That's asking a lot."

"I know. But you've trusted me this far."

Maya interrupted. "If this is true—if Thanos is real and coming—what are our survival odds?"

"AEGIS?"

The AI's voice filled the room. "Without intervention, Earth has twelve percent chance of preventing Thanos from achieving his goal. With optimal preparation—allied forces, Infinity Stone protection, enhanced defensive capabilities—probability increases to thirty-four percent."

"Those are terrible odds," Frank said flatly.

"They're better than zero." I pulled up strategic objectives. "Six years to turn impossible into merely improbable. Every alliance we build, every technology we develop, every enhanced individual we recruit—the odds improve incrementally."

"Incrementally toward still-terrible odds."

"Yes. But fighting with thirty-four percent chance is better than dying with twelve percent. Especially when the alternative is accepting extinction."

Yelena studied the Thanos image. "Where are the Infinity Stones now?"

I displayed known locations. "Space Stone: SHIELD possession, recovered from Tesseract. Mind Stone: currently with HYDRA via Loki's scepter, will likely remain there until SHIELD falls in two years. Reality Stone: Asgardian vault, supposedly secure. Power Stone: unknown location, probably Morag. Time Stone: Kamar-Taj under Ancient One's protection. Soul Stone: Vormir, practically inaccessible."

"So we need to protect six cosmic artifacts from a purple alien god while preparing conventional forces for universe-ending battle." Maya laughed without humor. "No pressure."

"Perspective: this is why I've been building capabilities that seem excessive for terrestrial threats. Why ARES Division emphasizes enhanced operatives. Why Ghost Network prioritizes cosmic intelligence. Why Project Phoenix develops biological enhancement. Everything serves preparation for conflict we can't afford to lose."

"Because losing means half of humanity dies," Frank said quietly.

"Correct. Including your families. Yelena's recovered Widows. Maya's research team. Christine. Natasha. Everyone we care about has fifty-fifty odds of disintegration if Thanos succeeds."

The room went very quiet.

"What do you need from us?" Yelena asked finally.

"Long-term commitment. Operational priorities for the next six years." I pulled up assignments. "Yelena, you're primary recruiter for enhanced individuals. Find them before enemies do. Offer them choice between our protection and HYDRA's slavery. Build a roster of people who can fight at Avengers tier."

"Acknowledged."

"Frank, you focus on conventional military preparation. ARES Division expansion. Training protocols. Equipment development. We need soldiers who can fight alongside gods without becoming collateral damage."

"Understood."

"Maya, you lead technological advancement. Extremis refinement. Chitauri weapons integration. Neural interface development. Anything that closes the capability gap between us and cosmic threats."

"Already working on it."

"AEGIS, you coordinate intelligence gathering. Track Infinity Stone locations. Monitor Thanos's movements through cosmic channels. Identify potential allies—Asgardians, Guardians, anyone operating at cosmic scale."

"Acknowledged. Additionally, I suggest prioritizing Avengers relationship building. They'll be critical in final confrontation."

"Agreed. Which means maintaining alliance with Stark, improving rapport with Rogers, keeping Natasha close, and ensuring Banner doesn't disappear before we need him." I closed the displays. "Six years, everyone. Maybe less if my timeline calculations are wrong. Questions?"

"Just one," Yelena said. "You're not just guessing about Thanos, are you? You've seen this before somehow."

I didn't confirm or deny. Just held her gaze.

She nodded slowly. "Thought so. Some secrets are too dangerous even for allies. I won't press."

"Thank you."

"But Justin?" She leaned forward. "If you die before Thanos arrives—if the void corruption takes you first—what's the contingency? Who continues the mission?"

"You do. All of you. This isn't about me surviving—it's about Earth surviving. I'm building systems that outlast me. Organizations that function without my direction. Alliances that persist beyond my involvement." I looked at each of them. "If I transform before Thanos arrives, the mission continues. You keep preparing. Keep recruiting. Keep building. And when he comes, you fight with everything I left you."

"That's asking us to win without you," Frank said.

"That's asking you to win regardless of whether I'm there. Because thirty-four percent odds with me become zero percent if everything falls apart after I'm gone."

Maya pulled up new project timelines. "Then we'd better use these six years well. Starting with Extremis 2.0 human trials next quarter and Chitauri weapons production by year-end."

"Agreed. Yelena, begin enhanced individual database expansion. Frank, initiate ARES Division recruitment wave three. AEGIS, establish cosmic intelligence monitoring protocols."

They nodded, accepting assignments, rising to leave.

Yelena paused at the door. "For what it's worth—I think we can do this. Not easily. Not safely. But possible."

"That's all I'm asking for. Possible instead of inevitable failure."

She left.

I sat alone in the briefing room, staring at Thanos's image. Six years until confrontation. Three years until my transformation. Which meant I'd likely die—or worse, become something else—before seeing if all this preparation mattered.

The void marks pulsed beneath my shirt. Eleven-point-five percent corruption.

But my inner circle knew what was coming now. Knew what we were building toward. Knew that failure meant extinction.

And sometimes, that knowledge was enough to keep fighting even when the math said you should quit.
