Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: The Helicarrier

Forty-eight hours after Loki's arrival.

Justin sat in his command center, Prometheus Suit on standby, watching fragmented communications from SHIELD's Helicarrier scroll across multiple displays. The Avengers had gathered on the flying fortress—Earth's mightiest heroes, assembled for the first time, bickering and fractured and completely unaware of what was about to hit them.

"Sir," AEGIS said quietly. "Communications traffic suggests increasing tension among Avengers team members. Additionally, Agent Barton's assault team is approaching the carrier's position."

Here it comes.

Justin's stomach clenched. He knew what was happening. Loki's scepter working on their minds, amplifying resentments. Barton leading a strike team while under mind control. Banner about to lose control in the worst possible place.

And there was nothing he could do but watch.

"Can we provide support?" he asked, already knowing the answer.

"Negative. Helicarrier is ninety minutes flight from our position. Additionally, unauthorized approach would be classified as hostile insertion. SHIELD would engage us before we could explain our intentions."

"So we just wait."

"We prepare. That is not the same as waiting."

Justin forced himself to breathe. The void marks on his arms pulsed with his anxiety, geometric patterns that glowed faintly even through his sleeves.

Then the first explosion flashed across his tactical display.

The attack unfolded in fragments.

Communications from the Helicarrier became chaotic, overlapping, terrified. Engine damage. Hull breach. Hostile forces inside the carrier. And underneath it all, a roar that made Justin's blood run cold—

Bruce Banner had transformed.

"Hulk is loose in enclosed space," AEGIS reported, voice clinical despite the horror of the implications. "Multiple casualties. Agent Romanoff status: engaged with hostile entity. Agent Barton: confirmed leading assault team under mental influence."

"Natasha—" Justin started.

"Communication channels are compromised. Unable to establish direct contact."

Justin gripped the arms of his command chair hard enough to dent the metal. She was up there. Fighting. Possibly dying. And he was stuck on the ground, useless, watching displays that told him everything and let him do nothing.

The Helicarrier listed on his screens, one engine destroyed. More explosions. More screaming on open channels.

Then: Thor and Hulk engaged in combat. Loki escaping his cell. Agent Romanoff status: alive, pursuing Barton.

She's alive. She's fighting. Trust her to survive.

But the communications kept flooding in. And then—

"Sir. Confirmed report: Agent Phil Coulson killed by Loki during escape. SHIELD director has announced his death to Avengers team."

Justin closed his eyes.

Maya found him staring at blank screens an hour later.

"The attack is over," she said softly. "Helicarrier is damaged but airborne. Avengers are scattered but alive. What's wrong?"

"A good man just died." Justin's voice was hollow. "Phil Coulson. He was trying to stop a god with a pistol and willpower. It wasn't enough."

"Did you know him?"

In another life. Watched him on screens. Liked him. Respected him. And now he's dead because I couldn't change that without breaking worse things.

"I knew of him. Knew he was one of the good ones." Justin turned to face her. "He's the fifth person I've let die because preventing their death might cause worse outcomes."

"Feel responsible?"

"I feel responsible for everyone who dies when I have knowledge that could have saved them but can't act on it without making things worse." Justin rubbed his face. "It's the price of foreknowledge, Maya. And it's heavy."

She sat beside him. "You can't save everyone."

"I know. But knowing it doesn't make it easier."

They sat in silence. Somewhere up there, the Avengers were fracturing—broken by loss, by Loki's manipulation, by their own dysfunctions. And somewhere in Justin's chest, guilt settled like stone.

Coulson believed in them. Believed in heroes. Died trying to stop a god.

Make his death mean something. Make sure the invasion fails.

Justin stood. "Assume portal opening is imminent. Move all assets to final positions."

The mobilization was precise.

Frank Castle established a command center in a reinforced building overlooking Midtown, his enhanced strength and durability making him the anchor point for ground operations. Yelena positioned Widow Network operatives throughout Manhattan for rapid civilian response. ARES Division's enhanced operatives took strategic positions with heavy weapons designed specifically for Chitauri combat.

And Justin moved his Prometheus Suit to a staging area three blocks from Stark Tower.

His Scientific Intuition had analyzed every variable, every piece of intelligence. The portal would open there. Above Tony's monument to himself. The battle's epicenter.

"All units in position," Frank reported through comms. "Medical stations ready. Evacuation routes clear. We're as prepared as we're going to get."

"Copy that. Hold until portal opens, then execute defensive protocols."

"Understood." Frank's voice was steady. "Boss? Whatever happens—it's been an honor."

"Save the farewell speeches for after we win." Justin checked his suit systems one final time. "We're going to survive this."

"Yes, sir."

The city hummed around Justin, oblivious. Millions of people going about their day, buying coffee, arguing with coworkers, loving and fighting and living—completely unaware that in hours, their sky would tear open.

His tablet buzzed. Encrypted message from Natasha: Avengers are pulling together. We're heading to New York. Loki has the Tesseract at Stark Tower. It's happening.

Justin typed back: I know. We're ready. Be safe. I love you.

The response came fast: Love you too. Try not to die heroically.

Justin laughed despite everything. No promises.

He closed the message, sealed his helmet, and waited for the end of the world to begin.
