Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: The Wedding Night

Chapter 68: The Wedding Night

The last guests left around midnight.

Mrs. Rodriguez was final out the door, pressing tupperware of leftovers into Fiona's hands despite protests. "For tomorrow. You'll want food without cooking." She hugged them both. "Congratulations again, mijos. Beautiful wedding."

"Thank you for everything," Fiona said, accepting the tupperware. "For the tamales, for being here, for—"

"For being family. That's what we do." Mrs. Rodriguez patted her cheek. "Now go enjoy your wedding night."

The door closed. Suddenly the house was quiet—no music, no voices, just distant sounds of Chicago at night. Ben and Fiona stood in the living room surveying the aftermath. Debris from celebration, empty plates, signs of joy.

"V and Kev took the kids," Fiona said unnecessarily. They both knew. V had orchestrated it weeks ago—wedding night privacy for the couple.

"So we're alone."

"Completely alone. In this house. For the first time since... ever, probably."

They looked at each other. Married. Actually married. The rings on their fingers proved it, but the reality still felt surreal.

"Help me with the dress?" Fiona asked.

Upstairs, Ben worked the buttons on Fiona's wedding dress—tiny pearl buttons that V had helped fasten ten hours ago. His hands were steady despite the moment's weight.

"Can't believe it's over," Fiona said. "The wedding. Months of planning, all that preparation, and it's just... done."

"Not over. Just beginning." Ben finished the last button. The dress loosened, slid off her shoulders. "Wedding's over. Marriage is starting."

She turned to face him, standing in underwear and Grammy's necklace. "We're married."

"We're married," he confirmed.

"Forever."

"Forever started eight hours ago. We're living it now."

She kissed him—slow, deliberate kiss between husband and wife. Different from engagement kisses or dating kisses. This was married kissing, permanent kissing, forever kissing.

They moved to the bed still partially clothed. Ben had discarded his jacket and tie hours ago but still wore dress shirt and pants. Fiona wore lace undergarments V had insisted were "bridal necessities."

"Wait," Fiona said, pulling back. "I need to say something first."

"Okay."

She sat cross-legged on the bed, vulnerable and determined. "We made it. Through everything—Robbie, cocaine, arrest, house arrest, relationship crisis. We survived all of it and got married. That's... that's incredible."

"We're pretty incredible," Ben agreed.

"No, listen. I mean it." Her eyes were wet. "Six months ago I didn't believe in stability. Thought it was boring. You showed me it's freedom. You prepared for disasters, protected me from consequences, loved me through chaos. You saved me, Ben."

"You saved yourself. I just—"

"No. You saved me. From Robbie, from myself, from the chaos I thought was freedom." She took his hands. "Thank you. For everything. For this." She gestured at her ring, the room, the life they'd built. "For forever."

"Thank you for choosing me. Consciously. That's all I needed."

She pulled him down beside her. "Make love to me. As your wife. For the first time."

Fiona

Making love as married couple was different.

Not technically—bodies worked the same, pleasure followed familiar patterns. But emotionally? Completely transformed. Every touch carried weight of promises made publicly. Every kiss reinforced vows spoken before family. Every movement built toward future they'd committed to forever.

Fiona had been with men before Ben—chaos partners who matched her energy, Jimmy who left, brief encounters that meant nothing. But this was different. This was her husband. Her choice. Her forever.

"I love you," she gasped against his neck.

"I love you too, wife."

"Say it again."

"Wife. My wife." He kissed her between words. "Forever mine."

"Forever yours."

They moved together, building toward climax that felt sacred despite being physical. Marriage transformed sex into something more—partnership, commitment, promise kept through intimate connection.

Afterward they lay tangled in sheets, sweaty and satisfied and married. Fiona's head rested on Ben's chest, listening to his heartbeat slow gradually.

"That was different," she said.

"Good different?"

"Amazing different. Like... we've done this before. But married sex is better."

"Because it's forever sex."

"Because it's us officially. Legally. Permanently." She traced patterns on his chest. "I'm your wife. Actually your wife. That makes everything better."

He held her closer. "You make everything better. Have since I met you."

"Charmer."

"Truth-teller."

They lay in comfortable silence, processing the day. The ceremony, the reception, the celebration. Perfect wedding earned through months of preparation and survival.

"What are you thinking?" Fiona asked.

"That I'm the luckiest person alive."

"Lucky Ben. Still living up to the name."

Ben kissed her forehead. "Thinking about how we got here. All the preparation, all the fighting, all the survival."

"Was worth it," Fiona finished. "All of it. For this."

"For this," he agreed.

Ben

Around 2 AM, Fiona fell asleep still pressed against him.

Ben lay awake, staring at the ceiling, processing everything. Wedding complete. Marriage official. Forever started. The preparation game was over. Protection had evolved into partnership. Everything he'd fought for since January 2011 had materialized into this moment—married to Fiona, family stable, life built from chaos and transmigration.

I arrived with nothing. Powers and foreknowledge but no identity, no resources, no plan beyond "protect the Gallaghers." Now I'm Ben Fisher, husband to Fiona, guardian to her siblings, business owner, community member. Real person with real life.

Fiona stirred against him. "Still awake?"

"Just thinking."

"About what?"

"About tomorrow. And next year. And next decade."

"Planning again. You're always planning."

"Someone has to."

"I'm glad it's you." She kissed his chest. "We're going to be happy, right? Forever? Or am I too optimistic?"

"We're going to be happy. Because we choose it. Daily. Forever."

"I like that answer."

"I like you, Mrs. Fisher."

"I like you too, Mr. Fisher."

They fell asleep shortly after—husband and wife, married couple, forever started and continuing. Outside, Chicago slept. Inside, Ben Fisher held his wife and planned their future with the same careful attention he'd given their survival.

Tomorrow brought married life. Next week brought routine. Next year brought whatever challenges arose. But they'd face everything together.

Forever guaranteed.
