By the time the rising sun floated on the water, the assault on the Twins had already achieved great success.
House Frey's twin tower banner on the city wall was thrown to the ground. The Frey sigil was blue twin towers on a silver-white background, with a bridge connecting the towers. This was once the pride of the Frey Family, but times had changed.
Now, unfurled on the walls of the Twins, was a quartered banner with a gold field, a stag and a dragon gazing down on the world. The sounds of fighting in the city had mostly died down. The heavy, oak-and-iron city gates of West River Castle were mostly consumed and destroyed, leaving only a rough outline of a gate and dark, charred ashes.
Ser Michel, a young man from the Vale, and Grafton's heir controlled West River Castle. Seaguard was responsible for guarding River Gate Tower and the arch bridge, while crabfeeders men, led by Ser Boros, suppressed East Keep.
From today onwards, the Crossing would no longer be the strongest of Riverrun's Lords. Marquess Walder had tried his best to keep the Twins out of the storm of war. During Robert's Rebellion over a decade ago, and the Second Riverlands War, the Twins had always remained neutral, but his schemes ultimately came to nothing.
Many of the Frey Family had died, most notably Black Walder, Hosdton Frey who guarded West River, and Danwell Frey who guarded East Keep. Their heads were impaled on spear points in the central square, a horrifying sight that reeked of blood. This was a bloody era.
At the same time, Marquess Walder, his heir Stefflon, the bastard Lornel Rivers who guarded River Gate Tower, and other Walder's had all been imprisoned. They truly were a large group of weasels.
Frey soldiers, wearing blue ringmail and silver cloaks, lined up in columns, threw down their weapons, and took off their armor. Under the fear of violence and weapons, they gathered in the square one by one, kneeling in surrender. Most of the Frey Family's elite soldiers were also slaughtered and eliminated, especially the Knights, horse archers, lancers, and Free Knights.
Gendry, Ser Barristan, Bronze Yohn, and others had already gathered in the square of West River Castle in the Twins, their faces all beaming with smiles. Although the battle was arduous, victory was exceptionally sweet.
Although most people despised the character of the Frey Family, the Twins was, after all, a first-rate stronghold in the Riverlands, and the Frey Family's strength was also considerable. After the decline of House Harroway, they were implicitly the strongest vassals.
"Your Grace, both the East and West Castles of the Twins have been captured by us. The large barracks near East Keep of the Twins have also been occupied. Most of the recruited farmers have fled, and some Mercenaries and Free Knights have surrendered to us," Lord Jason Mallister said excitedly.
"Lord Jason, that whole nest of weasels from the Twins is now under your management, along with the Frey Family's steward and Old Maester."
"As you command." Jason nodded. "I will send men to guard them strictly. I will treat the Frey's with the dignity due to noble captives. No one is allowed to approach these weasels, but neither shall they be humiliated."
"Lord Yohn, you are responsible for cleaning up the Twins, the gates, and the bloodstains. Also, burn all the defeated soldiers who fell to their deaths or drowned."
"As you command."
"Ser Boros, you are responsible for restoring order in the Twins. Those who looted, burned, and plundered are not true Knights."
"As you command."
The Knights led by Gendry were already the most elite contingent, and their quality and training costs also meant they were superior to infantry. The discipline required of these men would naturally be better than that of other recruited common soldiers. There were few instances of these Knights making mistakes. The key was the Mercenaries and Free Knights from the East Camp of the Twins; these men also took advantage of the chaos to plunder, committing many crimes in East Keep of the Twins.
