Chapter 116 - The Guardian's Trial

Part 1: The Trial of Resolve

The chamber trembled beneath Kael's feet.

Not from fear.

From awakening.

Ancient roots burst through the crimson stone, twisting across the floor like enormous serpents before climbing the towering walls. Thousands of glowing leaves unfolded at once, filling the sanctuary with soft emerald light.

Then...

Everything stopped.

Silence swallowed the chamber.

Kael slowly raised Stormfang.

The blade answered with a quiet hum.

Across the platform, the colossal guardian stood motionless beneath the crimson glow of the fractured Resonance Shard. Its body wasn't forged from metal or carved from stone.

It had grown.

Silver bark covered its enormous frame, intertwined with living roots that pulsed like veins beneath ancient wood. Crimson light flowed through the cracks across its body, beating in perfect rhythm with the wounded crystal suspended above it.

Two burning crimson eyes settled on Kael.

Nothing else moved.

Behind him—

A sharp cry echoed through the chamber.

"Kael!"

He turned.

Roots exploded from the walls.

Before anyone could react, thick emerald vines wrapped around Elaris's wrists, lifting her effortlessly from the ground.

"Elaris!"

Xyren activated his scanner.

Nothing.

The screen flickered once before turning completely black.

"What—"

More roots erupted beneath his feet.

Within seconds they had bound him against one of the towering pillars.

The guards drew their weapons.

It didn't matter.

Their blades never reached the roots.

Branches curled around their arms, gently but irresistibly forcing every weapon onto the floor before pinning them against the living walls.

Only AURIXA remained strangely calm.

The roots surrounded her...

Then quietly stopped.

Instead of restraining her...

They bowed.

She lowered her head.

"I understand."

The roots slowly retreated.

Kael frowned.

"AURIXA?"

She looked toward the Guardian.

Her voice became almost a whisper.

"This trial..."

"...has existed longer than my memory."

The Guardian finally moved.

Not quickly.

Deliberately.

Each step echoed through the sanctuary like distant thunder.

It stopped only a few meters away from Kael.

Stormfang vibrated.

Not with aggression.

Recognition.

The Guardian lowered its gaze toward the ancient blade.

Its deep voice rolled through the chamber.

"Storm remembers."

The words lingered inside the sanctuary.

The Guardian slowly looked upward toward the fractured Resonance Shard.

"Heart remembers."

Its eyes returned to Kael.

A long silence followed.

Then...

"Only people forget."

Kael tightened his grip.

"I don't understand."

"No."

The Guardian's enormous hand slowly rose.

"You do not remember."

The entire chamber inhaled.

Roots surrounding the sanctuary pulsed together.

The crimson light dimmed.

Then the Guardian spoke once more.

"Remember."

The world disappeared.

Cold air struck Kael's face.

He staggered.

The sanctuary was gone.

Stormfang remained in his hand...

But everything else had changed.

Rain poured from a sky hidden beneath black clouds.

Thunder rolled across distant mountains.

The scent of smoke filled the air.

Kael looked around.

A ruined battlefield stretched endlessly before him.

Broken towers leaned against one another like dying giants.

Ancient banners burned quietly beneath the rain.

Far away...

People were screaming.

"What is this..."

No answer came.

Only footsteps.

Kael spun around.

An armored warrior stumbled toward him, blood soaking through silver armor engraved with symbols Kael somehow recognized...

Even though he had never seen them before.

The warrior collapsed onto one knee.

Behind him...

Six frightened children huddled together.

The oldest couldn't have been more than twelve.

The youngest clung silently to a torn blanket.

The wounded warrior looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"...You're late."

Kael froze.

"What?"

The warrior smiled weakly.

"I knew..."

"...someone would come."

His breathing became uneven.

He slowly placed something into Kael's hand.

A tiny silver pendant shaped like a tree.

"Take them."

Kael stared.

"I don't even know who you are."

The warrior laughed softly.

"You don't need to."

His smile faded.

"Just protect them."

A deafening roar shook the valley.

Kael turned.

Hundreds of dark figures emerged through the rain.

Not soldiers.

Creatures.

Their bodies twisted together from shadows and corrupted roots.

Their crimson eyes burned beneath the storm.

The children instinctively stepped behind Kael.

One little girl tugged gently at his sleeve.

"...Are they coming here?"

Kael looked toward the approaching horde.

His heartbeat quickened.

Stormfang shimmered with blue lightning.

The wounded warrior slowly closed his eyes.

"...Run."

Kael looked between the children...

And the army.

His fingers tightened around Stormfang.

"I can't outrun that."

"Then don't."

The warrior's breathing stopped.

Silence.

Rain continued falling.

Kael stood alone.

Six children behind him.

An endless army ahead.

The first creature lunged.

Stormfang flashed.

Blue lightning tore across the battlefield.

The monster vanished before reaching him.

Another came.

Then three.

Then ten.

Kael fought.

Every strike dropped another enemy.

Every step backward brought the children farther from danger.

"Stay behind me!"

The oldest boy nodded.

"We're trying!"

Kael glanced back.

The smallest child had fallen.

Without thinking—

He caught her before she hit the ground.

A shadow lunged from above.

Stormfang intercepted it.

Lightning exploded.

The creature disintegrated.

Kael barely had time to breathe before more emerged from the rain.

Too many.

Far too many.

No matter how many he defeated...

The battlefield never became quieter.

Another roar.

Another wave.

Another wall of monsters.

His breathing grew heavier.

"This isn't ending..."

Stormfang hummed softly.

Almost...

Sadly.

The little girl looked up at him.

Her tiny hand still held tightly onto his sleeve.

Her voice trembled.

"...Will you leave us too?"

Kael's sword lowered.

The battlefield suddenly felt impossibly quiet.

Those words...

Somehow...

hurt more than every monster surrounding him.
