Chapter 270 - S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Emergency Order — The Divine Revelation

Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., had just been dragged into what was perhaps the fastest—and most efficient—meeting in the history of the World Security Council.

By the time he hurried back from the Triskelion to the Helicarrier, his face had become even darker than usual.

The moment he stepped into the command center, he began issuing orders.

"All personnel, prepare for deployment."

"I want everyone ready to move within thirty minutes."

"Our destination is Europe."

"Notify every S.H.I.E.L.D. branch in Europe immediately. Seal off every area beneath that giant's location."

"I don't care what those places are used for."

"Evacuate every civilian."

Someone nearby seemed about to object.

Fury cut him off instantly.

"Don't tell me we don't have enough manpower."

"The European militaries will cooperate."

"This is an emergency."

"If necessary, we are authorized to take control of everything."

"Is that understood?"

"Everything, sir?"

Victoria Hand, a Level Eight S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, frowned.

"Does that include military authority?"

"This is Italy."

She wasn't worried about the Italian army.

She was worried about something far more troublesome.

Vatican City.

The sovereign state nestled within Italy.

Even though religious authority had long since declined from its medieval glory, the Vatican still maintained a special force.

Some called them Holy Knights.

Others called them Paladins.

Still others knew them as Exorcists.

They wielded supernatural abilities...

And they were fanatics.

Even S.H.I.E.L.D. preferred not to provoke them unless absolutely necessary.

"You don't need to worry about those religious lunatics."

"They're already too busy dealing with their own problems."

"Summon them."

"That's an order from the World Security Council."

"If they refuse..."

"You are authorized to use any means necessary."

Fury spoke without hesitation.

To him, whatever privileges the Vatican once possessed were insignificant compared to the newly appeared giant deity.

Besides...

After witnessing today's worldwide supernatural phenomena...

S.H.I.E.L.D. had already reached a rather interesting conclusion.

If that conclusion was correct...

Then the Vatican no longer possessed the qualifications to challenge S.H.I.E.L.D.

The senior agents exchanged knowing glances.

Simply from Fury's words, they could already infer truths ordinary people would never imagine.

Victoria Hand immediately volunteered.

"Director."

"Allow me to take charge of the field operation."

"With a Quinjet, I can reach Europe first and coordinate everything."

Fury hesitated.

He had never fully trusted Victoria.

Her loyalties leaned noticeably toward the World Security Council.

He couldn't determine whether she was truly S.H.I.E.L.D.'s agent...

Or simply the Council's representative within S.H.I.E.L.D.

Still...

This wasn't the time to dwell on such matters.

He nodded.

"Take two tactical teams."

"And bring Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch."

Those were currently S.H.I.E.L.D.'s strongest assets.

Assigning them to Victoria demonstrated trust...

While simultaneously serving as surveillance.

Victoria didn't care.

She simply nodded and left the command center.

With the most troublesome assignment handled, Fury continued issuing orders.

"Jasper."

"Monitor every network."

"I don't want a bunch of lunatics spreading doomsday cult propaganda."

"Coordinate with local police and intelligence agencies."

"Arrest the leaders of every extremist cult."

"Charge them as terrorists if necessary."

"And remember..."

"Your cover identity is Interpol."

"Understood, Director."

The bald agent nodded and departed immediately.

"Coulson."

"Use every contact you have."

"Get in touch with every influential religious leader."

"I don't want religious fanatics causing trouble."

"Their gods haven't appeared for thousands of years."

"This giant has absolutely nothing to do with them."

"Tell them not to claim him as their own deity."

Coulson forced a bitter smile.

"Sir..."

"That might be difficult."

Religious zealots were among the most stubborn people in the world.

Then he noticed Fury's expression.

It looked even worse than his own.

"I'll contact them immediately."

"I'll make sure they don't do anything reckless."

"If anyone ignores the warning..."

Fury added coldly,

"...tell them to prepare to collect what's left of their churches."

"I've got plenty of bombs."

No one could tell whether he was joking.

Coulson certainly couldn't.

He twitched awkwardly before leaving.

Recently, he'd taken far too many political bullets for everyone else.

If necessary...

He had absolutely no intention of refusing to drag Fury into the line of fire as well.

Once everyone had received their assignments, Fury finally turned toward Commander Maria Hill.

"Any conclusions?"

Hill brought up the latest satellite data.

"None."

"We've used satellites."

"Laser imaging."

"Reconnaissance drones."

"Nothing works."

"We cannot capture his appearance."

"Every recording device fails."

"Just like with the naked eye..."

"Even if someone looks directly at him..."

"They can't retain his image."

"It appears to be some kind of supernatural phenomenon."

"Our technology simply cannot observe his true form."

"So..."

Fury folded his arms.

"Do you think he's really a god?"

"If even our best technology can't perceive his face..."

"Isn't that exactly what a god should be capable of?"

Hill remained expressionless.

"I don't know."

"But personally..."

"I don't believe gods exist."

"So I don't believe he's one either."

Whenever she encountered something science couldn't explain...

Her first instinct was skepticism.

Fury didn't argue.

Instead, he asked quietly,

"If there are no gods..."

"How do you explain the miracles that just occurred in hospitals around the world?"

"And if there are no gods..."

"What exactly is the artifact we're currently holding?"

Hill fell silent.

She couldn't answer.

The two simply watched the satellite feed.

Viewed from orbit...

The Radiant King was unimaginably enormous.

Only from space could one truly appreciate the scale of his body.

Perhaps...

Only a god could exist on such a scale.

Then—

Something changed.

The Radiant King's colossal body dissolved into blazing light and sacred flames.

The fire burned fiercely...

Yet miraculously harmed nothing.

A being tens of thousands of meters tall should have incinerated entire regions merely through radiant heat.

Instead...

Humans.

Animals.

Plants.

Everything basked within the divine flames completely unharmed.

Then...

A majestic voice echoed across the world.

Like thunder rolling across heaven.

Vast.

Solemn.

Impossible to resist.

Every person on Earth heard it clearly.

"I am the Sun God."

"King of Light."

"Lord of Flame."

"Ruler of the Void."

"I am the Radiant King."

"People of the world..."

"Hear my words."

"Practice goodness."

"Walk in the light."

"Commit no evil."

"Perpetrate no crime."

"Those who persevere in virtue shall receive my protection."

"I am the Radiant King."

"King of the Sun."

"Let those who perform good deeds speak my name."

"I shall know every act of kindness."

"I shall send my messengers to bestow light upon you."

"Those who commit evil..."

"Invoke not my name lightly."

"For the shadow within the light shall find you."

"Soul-harvesting demons shall claim your life."

"I am the Radiant King."

"I reward all goodness."

"I punish all wickedness."

"People of the world..."

"Walk your path with care."

No one had ever heard that language before.

No scholar could identify it.

Yet somehow...

Everyone understood.

The meaning flowed directly into every listener's heart.

Like genuine divine revelation.

In that moment...

Who still cared about God?

Who still cared about Allah?

Who still cared about the ancient deities that existed only within stories?

A living god stood before humanity.

A true deity.

Speaking directly to the entire world.

Delivering his commandments.

His revelation.

Compared to that...

The faiths of the past suddenly seemed like forgotten pages buried in dusty books.

Countless people fell to their knees.

They cried out the Radiant King's name.

As their voices echoed around the globe...

The Radiant King transformed entirely into a stream of brilliant light.

He shot into the clouds...

Then vanished into the endless sky.

Many witnessed him flying directly toward the Sun.

They immediately turned toward it...

And worshipped with utmost devotion.

From that day onward...

The Radiant King's divine authority eclipsed every other god worshipped on Earth.

Some observers were furious.

Some mocked his arrogance.

Others merely watched in silence.

As for Zhou Yi...

He opened another gate.

Beyond that doorway...

Awaited a destiny known to no one.
