Chapter 179 - Wise Old Man, Small Tricks

They hadn't chatted for long when an elderly woman came out carrying a large plate of steaming roast meat. She placed the plate on the table and wiped her hands, smiling.

"I heard you badmouthing Peter from the living room. We have a guest today, so don't always scold Peter like he's a child."

"It's because you always protect him that he's so immature!" Ben Parker complained, then walked forward and put his arm around the elderly woman's shoulders, introducing her to Zhou Yi.

"Mr. Zhou, this is my wife, May Parker. Honey, this is the Mr. Zhou I've been telling you about, the one who saved me, and these two lovely little angels are Mr. Zhou's children."

May Parker, holding her husband's arm, said to Zhou Yi with a look of gratitude.

"Mr. Zhou, thank you so much. If something had happened to my husband, I really don't know how terrible it would have been. You saved our family."

"You're too kind, Mrs. Parker. I just happened to be there. In that situation, I believe anyone with a conscience would have offered help."

"But you saved him, and that's enough. We'll always be grateful to you, sir!" The old woman's attitude was very firm. So firm that Zhou Yi couldn't refuse. He could only remain silent and tacitly agreed with the statement.

At this moment, the old woman turned her attention to the two girls. The moment she saw them, her wrinkled face instantly bloomed like a flower. Her eyes revealed undisguised fondness.

"They're such lovely children, Mr. Zhou. It's a blessing from God that you have such lovely children. Only you could have such adorable little angels."

"I told you we should have let Peter get married earlier, so we could have seen his children sooner!" Ben Parker muttered at this time, still not letting it go. May Parker then secretly pinched his waist.

"You're talking nonsense again, you old man. Peter hasn't even graduated from high school yet, how could he get married so soon? Even if he does, it'll have to wait until he goes to college."

"That means it's only two years away."

Amidst the two old people's chatter, Peter fled in defeat. He really couldn't stand being gossiped about like this, so he could only use the excuse of going to the kitchen to escape this embarrassing place.

Zhou Yi, on the other hand, enjoyed this kind of experience of chatting with others. Ben was an upright person, but he was very humorous. You could always find some fun chatting with him, and whether it was current affairs news or some gossip, the old man could clearly see some hidden things. After chatting with him for a while, Zhou Yi felt like he had benefited a lot. It couldn't be said that what he said was necessarily right, but some of his values in life were enough to make Zhou Yi think.

May Parker seemed more interested in the two young girls. She constantly fussed over them, asking if they were comfortable and offering them snacks and honey. It was clear that the old woman adored them, treating them as if they were her own children.

In this atmosphere of mutual enjoyment, it was soon lunchtime. The group naturally gathered at the table.

The Parkers had prepared a lunch of roasted meat, sandwiches, and sea bass. For dessert, there was apple pie and cookies, plus the snacks Zhou Yi had brought.

A bottle of red wine was opened, and everyone enjoyed May Parker's excellent cooking while continuing the conversation. Generally, it wasn't considered polite to talk during meals, but this old custom had long since changed with the times.

Many American families enjoyed discussing interesting topics during family meals, which prevented the meal from becoming dull and also deepened the relationships with their guests.

The Parkers might not have been wealthy, but they were happy and fulfilled. Zhou Yi finally understood why Peter could transform from a nobody into a respected hero.

It wasn't because he was powerful, but because he was genuine. He wasn't cynical because of his poverty, nor did he seek personal gain due to his circumstances. He simply did things to serve others, fulfilling the responsibilities he could manage with his own meager strength.

And in this, his family played a significant role. A good person's family, with their simple and pure values, provided the world with a true hero.

Lunch was still going on, and Zhou Yi had already begun to be a proper listener, hearing Ben voice his simple opinions in a loud voice.

"I don't think there's anything different about Mutants. There's no need to bring the dirty thoughts of politicians into our own lives. You don't have the right to criticize others if you haven't seen them do evil. You just need to do your part, why change your views based on what others say?"

"But you know, a lot of people in this world are blind. They'll follow those around them, and speak up. That's why many politicians want to control media and public opinion. They need these things to manipulate the public's thoughts."

Zhou Yi poured the old man a glass of wine, also expressing his own views.

"Thoughts can't be obscured, people will eventually see everything clearly, and no one can bury the truth forever. As someone who's lived more than half a lifetime, I can only say that time often allows you to see things more clearly. When you encounter a situation so chaotic that you can't even see clearly, waiting is often a better choice. If you really need to make a choice, I can only say that changing your perspective is also a way."

"You can't make choices for others. If you really want to do so, think from their perspective. And conversely, if others force you to do something, think from their perspective why they are doing it. Sometimes, there might be unexpected results."

The old man shook his head, expressing his own views. And this view made Zhou Yi admire him.

"You're right, perspective is the key. Seriously, Mr. Parker, your words are really insightful, I feel like you're more brilliant than the professor who taught sociology when I was in college. May I ask, what kind of work do you do?"

"You might be disappointed. I have nothing to do with the noble profession of a university professor. I'm just a retired ordinary worker. I worked diligently for decades and have my own views on this world."

"Speaking of which, I want to thank you again for the job you provided for Peter. Without your help, Peter probably wouldn't have become a formal reporter so easily. You brought hope to our family."

The old man didn't care at all about the fact that he had lost his job and even expressed his gratitude to Zhou Yi at the end, which made him a little puzzled.

"Sorry, Ben. I don't understand what you mean by hope?"

Ben Parker looked at his somewhat uneasy nephew and answered with a smile.

"There's nothing to be embarrassed about telling you. Peter has always had good grades, so his aunt and I always hoped he could go to university. But because I lost my job, the family really couldn't afford his tuition."

"I was originally going to look for some part-time jobs to earn some money while I still could. But Peter, this child, actually argued with me about this, saying that he would rather not go to university than let me go back to work. Fortunately, you gave him an exclusive interview, allowing him to earn money to go to university by working on his own. Otherwise, our family might still be in a bit of a turmoil!"

"This is not a good thing, Peter. In any case, you shouldn't disobey your elders." As an elder, especially when the two young ones were around, Zhou Yi naturally stood on Ben's side. But he was very tactful in this matter. "But I can understand how you feel, after all, you are also filial. But I think Mr. Parker is in good health and is far from the time to retire, so your worry is unnecessary."

"Exactly, Peter is still just a kid, but he's always trying to make decisions for us. It's ridiculous! I know my own body, and there's no problem with me working. Staying at home is what's going to make me sick." Ben Parker said, his face flushed with excitement. He was obviously happy to find someone who shared his views.

"Uncle!" Peter could only say resentfully. At this moment, he could only play the role of the aggrieved party and didn't dare to argue at all.

At this moment, Zhou Yi thought for a moment and seized the opportunity to say,

"If Mr. Parker wants to work, I have a job available for you!"

"Really? That's wonderful." Ben opened his mouth and immediately agreed. He hadn't expected such a good thing.

But Peter wasn't happy. He quickly interjected,

"Wait a minute, Uncle, at least ask clearly before agreeing to someone, okay? Promising things you can't do is a big mistake, you told me that yourself."

"Peter!" Ben raised his voice. It was very rude for Peter to interrupt at this moment, although he knew it was for his own good. "You should trust Mr. Zhou, it's a matter of politeness."

"Don't blame him, Mr. Parker. It's understandable; he's just concerned about you. I should have explained the job first."

Zhou Yi waved his hand, stopping Ben from scolding Peter.

"This is the job. You should know that I recently sponsored an event in New York. Those Mutants kids don't have a place to stay in New York City. So, I offered them an apartment under my name. But because of their identities, the original apartment manager has resigned. So, I've been looking for a new manager."

"The requirements aren't high, just no discrimination against Mutants. The daily work is just preventing some troublemakers from entering the apartment. The benefits are excellent! How about it, Mr. Parker, are you interested?"

Zhou Yi shouldn't have been involved in this, but because everything in the newly established Mutant department was monitored by Aida and reported to him at any time, he knew what was happening around these Mutants. And, coincidentally, he remembered the vacancy.

In his opinion, no one was more suitable than Ben Parker. This old man was wise, clear-headed, and clearly expressed the view that Mutants and humans should be treated equally. He wouldn't be hostile to those young people, nor would he pity them. This viewpoint was the most important thing. Moreover, he was Spider-Man's uncle.

"Of course, Mr. Zhou. It seems our family has to thank you again!" Ben Parker agreed once more.
